Coughran speaks of his Preferred Family Healthcare $300,000 grant and effort to help counsel youth for substance abuse. 80 clients ages 12-17. Includes control group. Part of this is to get past the distances between the clients and hospital.

All go through residential help, some get through the VW later. 21 currently in experimental group. What they have seen so far (12 months) has been very encouraging. Many more kids are sucessful as well as still engaged with the counseler than with the non-VW group.

They are looing to expand the program to other age groups

Virtual Ability hosts a meeting on H1N1 (Swine Flu) the very weekend after it hit the main stream media. A super example of the flexibility and collaboration possibilities of virtual worlds. This snap is from earlier in the meeting.  Attendance peaked at 48.

The meeting consisted of some presentations and a Q&A panel with an international team of doctors, including some in Mexico.  Panelists included those from the Ann Meyers Medical Center (Ren Stonecutter, Paty Amiot, Virtualriver Cazenove), medical librarian Perplexity Peccable, and others. Topics included safety guidelines, the best resources for more information, tools for tracking the newest information. (From the notecard)

The Imperial College of London has a very nice hospital training sim that they let just about anyone wander around in. (That is VERY nice of them.)

To me it appears to be well thought, with some nice details...like the Get Well Soon cup on the case to my right.

I did find it mildly amusing that I had to walk to the lab and radiology to pick up my reports. Maybe someday they will get it all online :-)

Seriously 'tho, I think the experience of walking into a patient's room in a virtual world will make it a bit easier to do so in real life. It is these sort of things, that differentiate virtual worlds from other types of trainging.

I stopped by to try the Dating Game...and learned a few things.  A nice idea for sure.

The Path of Support had a booth at the 5th annual Dreams Fair.  The booth included informational posters, a ULR giving poster for SLHealthy and a freebie- the Smiley Chat Badge!

The Path of Support ended up getting about twice the number of usual visitors during the fair, so I'd say it was a success!

It includes a number of settings as well as informational resources, and meditation/meeting places.  IBM has an area devoted to their distributed computing for AIDS research project.  There is also a Memorial area with stories and pictures.  A wonderful Memorial Falls area is pictured.

Wow, a whole host of 'doctoring' type goodies on sale here. Everything from basic clothing (scrubs, stethoscopes, ...) Patient HUD (animated chills, anger, depression, stomache ache...), gurney, wheelchairs, skins with various 'diseases', drug induced animations to try out, a very complete store.

One can also register your avatar as a patient or doctor.

It is really quite a collection. There *may be* some educational benefit to some of these items, but probably more for entertainment value.

More than a bit different that the "typical" healthcare sim, ak's CLINIKC features am Avatar Death area.  It is a nicely done station that allows one to do in ("kill") their avatar and have its 'death' recorded on the web. You can even 'cry' about it a bit...as well as a last minute chance to cancel.

While I have visted several avatar cementaries and memorials, this is the first place that I've run into that caters to this sort of activity. I have no doubt there are probably other areas/groups that are somehow similar, given the variety of SL, but ak's is quite complete and formal.

The Center for Disease Control has a new island, having vacated their earlier parcel.  This is a nice build with quite a few areas including an issues of the month walk, conference center, and lab.  it is nicely landscaped with picnic/meeting areas outside.

There are a few buildings up at this time...more like some grass huts, but that's OK. Plenty of space for meetings and events, and it sounds like that is what they plan to be doing.
