Seems suddenly the .in side of the internet is flooding my mailbox with awesome offers to work from home taking surveys!

Email addresses both claim to be "Survey Junkie" yet are from two different .in addresses.

And speaking of "legit", another .in tells me "Critical PC Error Alert-Microsoft Updates Required" and an easy fix that doesn't involve going to Microsoft and downloading the Microsoft Updates! How kind of them!

Or smarter. By doing this they are garunteed anyone who responds is probably very easy to scam.

Prime situation to waste their time by responding to them and leading them on.

They will keep going as they are desperate.

This works better for phone scams though - by keeping them on your line for as long as you can, you waste time they could be getting more hits. This is also how you can get on their REAL do-not-call list. (Asking for them to won't do a thing.)

I was going to suggest that they learned typing back in the 1970's, but I doubt they are that old.

Anyone else remember when keyboards didn't have keys for the numbers zero or one? (Had to use upper-case letter O and lower-case letter L, respectively).

Of course, I was a very young colt back then.

Divide wasn't slash, it was colon-backspace-hyphen, and bang was apostrophe-backspace-period.

I don't remember how to make an * or # though.

I once got a worried client (sensible Swiss lawyer, in fact) telling me he'd got a mail from an address including "Interpole" (yes, yes, with the "e") where a "scientific forensic expert" with a French name (and roughly the right address) suggested he provide details of all his bank accounts so they could make sure they hadn't been hacked or used for money laundering. Client said he was "fairly" sure it wasn't legit but... what did I think?

I kid you not.

It's hardly surprising that social engineering happens. Last big case I heard about concerned a bank where the criminals had got away with a billion (yes, a BILLION) dollars in a single transaction.

I don't think I'll open those attachments.
We are getting similar emails here in the US emulating the IRS, FBI and DHS. Basically they say that the person is being audited/served/required in court and that they need to down load the attached document, fill it out and return it.

I even got one of these spoofing a Jury Duty notice with the attached file labeled voir dire.

Crazy.

i rarely see scam emails anymore....i think i've got most of em flagged to junk, but i did get a weird phone call last week
some guy claiming he was from microsoft and my computer had just been infected with a horrible virus, and only he could fix it, but i'd need to provide my banking information to cover the service....
i had just woke up, so i growled 'you are so full of shit' and hung up on him....i just wasn't in the mood to frustrate him and waste his time before i had coffee

Some of them can be a bit inventive. I had one who for about two weeks would call me with a robo caller every couple of days and a recorded message about their being a credit collection agency and I needed to contact them right away, or face legal action and a credit hold on my bank accounts. They never identified who they were calling, or gave me a number to call back, just the message and a hang up.

Than I received the email same company, still no name on who they are attempting to contact, but I guess it must be me after all they emailed me right. They wanted me to fill out a form with my SS#, bank accounts, and any credit card/debit card numbers including the security number on the back of the cards. The form was not even in an attachment, just fill it out and return the email to sender. Should I not do so well I would face legal action and holds on all my accounts.

Seemed legit, but for some reason my finger accidently hit the delete key, so now I'm just worried sick about that legal action, or account holds, now that the email was erased before I returned it, but that was over a month ago.

Oh wait, I don't have any outstanding debts........ so maybe they were a little to slick in the telephone calls to set the stage, followed by the email looking for private information.
