Yes, cats don't need nearly as much care, but neither do houseplants.

Total dog lover here. Dogs smile when they're happy. I've never seen a cat smile except in Alice in Wonderland.

I think it's a chemical thing for me too. Dogs can be unpleasant and stinky if you feed them the wrong things, but cats are just toxic no matter what. I don't hate them. I've had fun playing with them, but I'd just as soon not be around them. I guess that makes me a speciesist.

[Slightly off topic ramble below]
Not too many years ago there was a researcher who came up with a wild theory that wolves (dogs) allowed early man into their packs to hunt together, thereby freeing up the need in man for a highly developed olfactory sense, and according to him, developing more agile mouth parts for language and culture. The wolves benefited too because we were efficient tool / weapon users. I'm not sure I buy into the theory 100%, but it's something to think about.

Dog and man do go a looooong way back and they have become almost symbiotes I think. You don't often hear about cats rescuing people or enjoying their work as dogs can. But I'm sure someone will give us examples.
[end of slightly off topic ramble]

Here's how cats smile: They squinch their eyes. It's a little eye-close thing as you look at each other.

In my entire lifetime, I've never seen a cat eat the turd of any animal.

On the other hand... I've seen dogs eat cat turds, dog turds and even turtle turds. Plants are the only other things that eat fertilizer.

Btw, cats do hunt in packs, when they need to. I've seen them do it. They've never needed our help with anything... especially hunting. I don't think I know of any other animal that always carries 20 or more switchblades with them at all times.

So what your trying to say is that dogs are superior because they recycle for the good of our environment?

LOL, really??

I have 3 cats. When one of them was a little kitty and had diarrhea all over its fur (i have no idea how it got on its freaking front chest), i put the kitty in the bathroom with the mother - who licked the crap off the kitten.

Cats hunt in packs... LOL right, what is more plausible:a pack of dogs roaming the streets of East St. Louis at 4am or a pack of cats rolling 20 deep ready to scratchify all in their path... This is not the Serengeti, domestic cats "hunting in packs" is about as prolific as crocodiles living in the sewers of New York city.

Yeah, I haven't figured that one out yet. Maybe trying to disguise their scent? They sniff each others butts too even though they're supposed to have a very sensitive noses.

I can believe this. We've all seen nature shows with big cats working together for the hunt.

Wow, this thread is getting heated.

Dogs will eat cat poo sometimes because cats eat such rich foods.

As for eating its own or other animal's poo, it's a starvation instinct that kicks in unnecessarily sometimes. There is a tiny amount of nutrients to be had, and the dog's stomach is strong enough to process it.

A cat cleaning itself or another cat is not the same as seeking out dried up mummy turd and gobbling it down like it was puppy chow.

And yeah, cat's hunt in packs in the wilds of New Jersey (albeit 40 years ago when there were still woods in N.J.). I watched a pack of 6 feral cats corner a woodchuck along a high stream bank while I was fishing. It took them a 1/2 hour to bring it down.

i like it when a dog and a cat grow up together and they're part of the pack together, and it's so cute when they cuddle up with each other and sleep on the couch.

.....and just because Fanny killed this thread dead.....

A couple of years ago someone let some fireworks off near my house while fanny was performing a necessary function in the garden. She took fright and ran off! I wandered around for four bloody hours looking for her. My partner was bereft. The dinner burned.

Then when we got home the Police had left a message that she had been found in the city center and could we collect her. She was in a cell being pampered by policemen and did not even have the decency to look ashamed.

Anyhows.....a friend of mine who is an excellent artist depicted the scene for posterity. She caught Princess Fanny's character wonderfully I thought.

Cats do not fart.
Neither do I.

I love when dogs know they did something naughty (like fart), and give you that 'look'. You know, when they look at you, but then quickly look away. So cute!
(their farts stink, though.)

LOL. Great story.

My dog loves fireworks. Around Nov 5th, he always wants to go into the garden to watch them going off in the neighbourhood. If he spots any when I'm walking him, he starts pulling me in their direction.

He'd make a great gun dog.
