Yup, I usually ignore the disks I have and download new stuff... (of course I can't find my disks anyway )

Either our work network sucks or Asus' does, it's taking me half a day to get them all!

On top of that, I've also figured out I'm supposed to install certain things before others... so... wee!

Oh, and the machine is an Asus Z70va notebook I got 2.5 years ago.

Sadly, the cds will be of no use I don't think I can rely on my cd drive any longer...

Yeah, I'm going to have to get more of those... plus I have one of those usb to ide/sata things now, so if I have to, I can use external drives.

You can get a new CD drive.

Or even an external CD drive.

Here's a question... if it's a controller problem, is it the drive, or is it something on the motherboard that talks to the drive?

I'm trying to figure out if replacing the cd drive would fix it.

I've looked up the component - it's 160 bucks.

Joshua is right... an external drive would be the best solution... cheapest, and you don't have to worry about whether it is your drive or your controller.

CD Drives fail pretty frequently depending on usage. I've gone through about four external CD/DVD writers in as many years, but I work them hard.
