Laughs at Falling - Insensitive or No?

After the past couple of days here, I'm feeling a wee bit guilty laughing at this. But, I've always laughed at people falling. Usually after finding out they're ok first.

I wonder if they lose their jobs if they fall?

Also, some of those heels are a fucking menace!

In that case, I would feel bad. Though some of those falls look like they were done on purpose. I've had a few myself, in heels, and don't remember my feet wobbling like that. Usually one good twist and BOOM, earthquake!

I'd hate to have every time I've taken a spill on high heels captured and posted on the internet for ridicule. I'm not comfortable with pointing and laughing at others during their own embarrassing moments, myself.

OK, fine.. I'm now feeling more guilty for laughing. Hasn't stopped me from doing it though. Hell, I laugh at myself for falling (or other embarrassing things, of which they are many).

Do you want a serious answer in ZOMGWFTBBQGTFOLOLCATS?

The serious answer is that it depends on why you are laughing. If you are laughing at them because you enjoy seeing pretty or successful people fail- that's not just insensitive, but hating.

If you are laughing because those are epic falls- well, that video has a collection of some spectacular falls.

Part of the skill set of a model is the ability to move gracefully under the most unnaturally hostile set of circumstances while strangers watch judgmentally. Most of the time, runway models do it amazingly well. As long as you can appreciate the skills they need and usually exhibit when doing the job, I think it's fun to enjoy the blooper reel.

Some of those falls were truly epic.

Not every fall is funny. Most aren't. But the time I had one foot in the air and my heel caught on the ice and I slid a good six feet looking like I was doing the Curly Shuffle before landing on my ass in the snowbank? Hilarious.

And the time I was walking beside a coworker in the parking lot and my toe snagged on a piece of asphalt and I face-planted - and my coworker didn't notice until 10 paces later when he went to talk to me and I wasn't there? Hilarious.

My point wasn't whether the op was funny or not. My point rather is that humour is extremely subjective. Sometimes in our lives we'll surprise even ourselves with what'll provoke a spontaneous guffaw.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with pretty or successful people falling. But, I used to be a regular watcher of America's Funniest Home Videos, and that show included 60 mins (ok 45?) of falls or stupidly embarrassing moments. Included adults, children, pets, etc. Granted, those people applied to be on the show (or the parents did).

Quite often I had tears falling down my face from laughing, even if I felt bad for the person doing it.

Then again, I have also broke into a gigglefit at a funeral for no reason whatsoever, and had to excuse myself.

If People and animals falling down wasn't funny, then "America's Funniest Home Videos would be in it's 22 season

<---- see? shit like this is funny, because it is normal to be a rotten bastard and laugh at the folly of others. It's in our DNA

Which reminds me. Why are cats so hilarious? Because they take themselves so damned seriously. Really, if there's nothing injured other than a bruised ego and it just happened (rather than someone was tripped, pushed, etc), it's OK to laugh.

There's one or two I really felt bad for. One girl looks like she went back on her head.

When my oldest son was 11 or 12, I sent him down to the store (basement) for bread and soda. He'd been gone a while, so I figured he was hanging down there talking to his friends. He comes up and immediately goes into the elevator got stuck, and he was in a panic. First time ever being stuck, so I can understand the fear. I'm hugging him while he explains (and thinking I'll call the guard to see if it really did get stuck).

Well, it seems he thought he could take the 2 liter bottle of soda, and bang it on the floor, and the elevator would move. The way he explained it and showed it, both hubby & I busted out laughing.

Well this little shit didn't appreciate us laughing, and screamed "I was fucking scared goddamit! Stop laughing at me!" We really had to stifle ourselves to get him calmed down.

Over 10 years later and I'm still laughing as I imagine him banging the bottle of soda on the floor. Not the fear, just that.

Laughing at people is highly insensitive.

In saying that, I do it all the time, even without checking to see if the person that fell is ok.

My mum fell once. On a bridge in Germany, just stumbled off the path, onto the road. Thankfully it was quiet, no traffic. We (myself and my Dad) didn't notice at first, but when we turned around a few seconds later, we saw her on the ground, clutching her ankle. She'd bruised it. Took her a few minutes to be able to get up. Myself and Dad weren't any help, either. We were incapacitated with laughter.

you're right.... it's fucking hilarious =D

here's an easy rule, if the person causes it themselves (like by wearing high heels, and don't give me that job requirements BS, they can get other jobs) then laughing shouldn't just be ok, it should be mandatory =P

Play frames and incongruity are psychological concepts; only recently has neurobiology caught up with them. In the early 1990s the discovery of mirror neurons led to a new way to understand the incongruity aspect of humor. When we fall down, we thrash about as we reach out to catch ourselves. Neurons in our brain control these movements. But when we observe another person stumbling, some of our own neurons fire as if we were the person doing the flailing—these mirror neurons are duplicating the patterns of activity in the falling person’s brain. My hypothesis regarding the relevance of this mechanism for humor behavior is that the observer’s brain is “tickled” by that neurological “ghost.” The observer experiences an unconscious stimulation from that ghost, reinforcing the incongruity perception.

BTW, I did read it. Interesting. May be true, but I think I laugh because it's funny! And, when its me doing the falling because I'm embarrassed and just a klutz!

Actually I find the whole "Runway Model" thing funny.

Maybe if they had some meat on their bones they could manage to walk the 50 or so feet without falling.

I once worked on a ship that had communal shower rooms for the crew. After a while it became second nature to wrap a towel around yourself and wander down the hall to take a shower. One day as I was leaving the shower room, the velcro on my shower shoes came apart, I lost a shoe and a wet foot came down on a slippery floor. I took a fall straight out of the cartoons..my feet running in mid air as they went straight up and over my head. My body went one way and my towel went the other as I landed on my naked ass outside the chief engineer's office. I was so bruised, I missed two nights work and had to slink back to my cabin followed by howls of laughter from various crew who had come to what the commotion was. I was in serious pain and badly humiliated but I had to admit it was seriously funny.

Twice, home alone, taking a shower. Phone rings and, well, I like to airdry. So I go running for the phone on tile floors and KABOOM! Once was just a boom. The second, I ended up with a knee banging the wall, and my head banging the door frame.

Family comes home and asks why I'm limping and bruised. Then had to explain to outsiders that no, my husband did not punch me in the eye, I hit a wall. Um, that took quite a lot of splaining.
