RIP, Trololo Guy, thanks for the lulz

I'm not sure whether to post this to Politics Religion and Society or here so I'm just going with here.

Eduard Khil, singer of the trololo song, has died in St Petersburg from complications resulting from a stroke.

Here is an interview with him on Russian TV with english subtitles where he talks about trololo:

Awww! RIP. He laughed it all off and seemed pretty surprised that the video surfaced and became so massive!

RIP, indeed. Leaving behind something that makes people smile is a good legacy.

That's the first time I've heard the story behind that song (and there were some wierd snippets in that video!) ... and I also found this:

Did I read that right? He sang that song without words because it was a cowboy song and the original lyrics were banned? Wow. So a hugely popular meme today is due to Soviet era censorship in the 70's?

That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy somehow. Like despite the cold war nonsense something timeless was made that was beyond words and borders and politics. I can't explain it - but it makes me happy.

Yup that's exactly right. The lyrics were "ideologically questionable" so he just sang the song without any words. And then everyone forgot about it until it the internet got a hold of it. The song title in the video roughly translates to "I'm very happy, because I'm finally going home". Kind of makes me wonder what the original song was.

RIP, Eduard Khil.
