Do You Believe in Alien Abductions?

I just saw the trailer for The Fourth Kind, and I have to admit just the trailer freaked me out a bit. It claims to be based on true case studies. I have never really given the topic of alien abductions much thought, but it has made me curious. Do you think alien abductions are real?

AND THEY TOLD ME THE SECRET OF LIFE THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING..

But I can't discuss it, as it would be such a revelation it would bring society tumbling down around us.

The site for the film has some other interesting videos - the featurette on alien encounters is fascinating.

I said no because of the question implies abductions in the conventional alien narrative for which no compelling evidence exists.

That said, I think the odds of there being life on other planets is very good! However, the odds that any given life form on another planet might be at a similar technological level as us (say, within 5000 years of development) is extremely slim. If ET is out there, the odds are almost certain that it will be FAR less advanced than us (single celled organisms, for example) or FAR more advanced than us (we wouldn't even KNOW if they are watching us, just as bacteria doesn't know its under a microscope. That's how advanced they are.)

This makes the usual scenario (spaceships, beams of light, human-looking dudes with big heads) all kinda unlikely. But hey, as Carl Sagan said ... billions and billions. With so many stars out there, the universe gets a whole lot of dice rolls, so even the unlikely is possible or even inevitable.

Cris -- the fact that a lot of the footage that is apparently "real" actually isn't should be interesting to you.

Also, as the child of a real-life investigative journalist who personally knew some of the people who researched this stuff, I would say they were all making it up.

I wish it was real. But I don't think it is.

I was abducted! Well I dreamed I was! It was all very bizarre I was smoking lots at the time and it was the weirdest dream / abduction ever! I was paralyzed in my sleep and could not move I was seeing the aliens and sensing them like they were super scary! And there was something about the 10 commandments and something in my brain they had to remove that does not make sense anymore. The weird addition to this was waking up there was a loud bang and flash of light "lightning?!" And I was awake who knows maybe the electric build up and the smoking had something to do with it lol... Anyway there you go my story I was abducted! "Or dreamed I was!". No doubt this is how people report being abducted it really seemed like I was!

I think there probably is alien life out there somewhere but I think it would be so incomprehensibly different from life on Earth that the concept of alien abduction just wouldn't apply. I sincerely doubt that any aliens out there would walk upright, with two legs, two arms and a head on top. You know that classic "grey alien"? It first appeared in a story by HG Wells in 1901, and was later picked up again (possibly subconsciously) in the 60s-80s.

The reports, I would suspect, are just people having very vivid dreams after reading too many pulp science fiction books .

I spent a long time looking into the alleged alien abductions and unidentified flying objects and something is going on but it might not be as simple as aliens from outer space. That seems to be our cultural interpretation, just like the past interpretation would have been angels/demons.

Their are claims with physical evidence. But nothing that conclusively that shows an alien came from another planet.

If the lightspeed barrier can't be broken in spacetravel (something the current energy/matter equation sadly tells us), the existance of aliens won't matter anyways, sadly.

Even if they are out there (and I highly believe they are, if not quite several of their kind since in an universe of billions of suns with even more planets, the chance of other life not evolving is rather ridiculously small and naysayers always forget that life could be based on a vastly different backgronud than ours) it probably would take them hundreds or thousands of years to get to us..if they flew in a straight line. For one way of a two-way trip.

And if they are so technologically advanced that they can hyperjump all over, easily find us and monitor us, they probably won't show up in front of us in the first place. What reason should they have? 'Oh god an aggressive species at war with itself that can't even agree on just which father figure in the sky is the real one and tends to treat their kind's races with different skin colors unfairly? I'M SO THERE!', or what?

On that note, I'm more bound to credit any strange alien sightings to the paranormal than actual aliens. Because, in a way, it's ironically more probable.

People used to see angels, fairies, trolls and demons all the time.

Now science fiction has become an essential part of our culture and they see aliens and flying saucers.

Go figure.

I wouldn't be surprised at vaguely humanoid... after all upright gets our tool-using appendages off the ground. But it would be fascinating to see what evolution would drive under different circumstances.

I think life probably exists elsewhere in the universe, given the size of space & how many billions of stars there are. It's possible that primitive lifeforms may exist elsewhere within the solar system - it would be odd for Earth to be the only place where life exists in the entirety of the universe. That said, there may be highly advanced civilizations out there, or really primitive ones, built on entirely similar, or dissimilar experiences as our own, but sadly it may never be possible to come into contact with them because of the vast distances of space.

That said, perhaps one day the SETI program's broadcasts might detect something that replies back. So far it has been mostly silence and one single, non-repeating, Wow!_signal that may, or may not, have been artificial in nature.

Interpretations of Ezekiel's flying wheel of fire aside, it's not coincidental that the seance fads of the early 20th century were replaced by flying saucer sightings in the '40s (1947, to be exact, when Ken Arnold claims he spotted alien craft flying near Mt. Ranier. Roswell was only a month later.)

Most of the scientific analysis I've read of the UFO phenomenon links it with illusions, misperception, mass hysteria, etc. People can convince themselves of anything if they believe strongly enough. See also: sig line.

There are only very subtle differences between imagined UFO abductions and the ancient myth of the succubus, come to perform unnatural sexual acts upon you against your will. Modern anal probing is just the latest iteration of being raped by a demonic being in your sleep. Except she was much better looking than these bug-eyed grey things.
