Well Kristian unfortunately I don't have a couch or box for you but...

I would recommend south central PA. The housing crisis has barely touched this area. The job situation is good. The largest employer is the Commonwealth, you have experience living in the are of a capitol city. But in this state they can't operate without a balanced budget so we aren't working on a deficit. We also have a pretty healthy economy compared to the rest of the country and western PA.

Anyway its close to several major cities, Baltimore, DC, Philly, NYC and the Jersey Shore and Ocean City. All 4 hours away at the most.

For interesting spots. Well there is Hershey know for chocolate of course and the amusement park. Also a pretty dang good medical center.
Gettysburg if you are into the whole civil war thing
If you are outdoorsy there is plenty to do. But I'm a city gal so I have no idea.

PA is a great state. I'd recommend it.

Too hot, mostly boring-ass suburbs.

It's cheap to live here, but wages are also low, so it's easy to get stuck because you can't afford to GTFO.

I would have to second this. I've lived in Lancaster Co. in Southcentral PA for my whole life. It's easy to get places, you're relatively close to so much, and where I live is a small(ish) town area and nice place to raise my kids. The school district we're in operates pretty well, I'm pleased with what my kids are doing there.

A lot of the area is rural, but not as "backward" as some people seem to think. It's an area famous for the Amish, but since they're expanding into many other states, they're not as "unusual" to the rest of the world as they once were. Still, they bring a lot of tourists into the area in the summer.

P.s. The roads do really suck in Pa, though.

It's not that bad, but if you're on too tight of a budget, then maybe Vermont would be better...

Me too but living on the Cape isnt all that its cracked up to be...

I would recomend western MA to anyone with some $$, tho. Its amazing.

I lived in western NC for awhile and highly recommend the area for its beauty... clean, affordable living and much opportunity.

If it wasnt for the rest of the people there I might not have left.

I love Maine. The economy is bad, but it is like that everywhere.

If you're looking for nightlife...um...Maine is not for you, but Portland is the best of the lot. If you like quiet, or the outdoors. Maine is wonderful.

I couldn't imagine not being able to go *here* for 'thinking time'...
I visited a friend of the family (a wonderful guy my mother's age) in Maine once. It was beautiful and serene, and we went walking on a beach just like that.

And on the plane ride back to NYC, I was treated by an overview of Vermont in the full throes of fall! (I think it was Vermont, anyway. I'm a geographically-challenged individual.)

A canopy of ENDLESS beautiful treetops in fall colors. The girl sitting behind me on the plane was so overcome she had to tap me on the shoulder to make sure I was sharing the experience with her.

It's funny about towns and cities. Very personal, actually.

I was regaling my husband on a trip one time with this lengthy recital of all the towns and cities I'd lived in and the ones I loved the best, and the ones I hated.

In brief:

I love NYC and Atlanta and Michigan City, Indiana, with every fiber of my being. You will pry those cities out of my hands over my cold, dead body.

I also have a deep fondness for the beauty (albeit squalor) of the northwest corner of Arkansas, but that's in a different category, because I wouldn't want to live there again.

I disliked living in Austin, Houston (too much humidity), and Tulsa. I wasn't wild about Ann Arbor.

Austin, you say? You hated living in AUSTIN?

Yes I did. I didn't care for the weather, and I had some crappy things happen in my college years which unfortunately colored the experience. And last time I was there, which wasn't long ago, the traffic was just ridiculous.

I guess I have no particular fondness for my alma mater, either. Don't DISlike it; just have no particular fondness for it, and lots of my Texas friends do.

I agree completely. I live in northen Mass. and can be in Boston enjoying the citylife within 45 minutes...or I can be up in the White Mountains enjoying nature in about 1.5 - 2 hours. And the ocean is only about 45 minutes away as well.

I love the climate here. We hardly ever get hurricanes or tornadoes. All we have to deal with are the "Nor'easters" dumping 2-3 feet of snow....which I love.

If its too expensive this close to Boston, there's always southern New Hampshire which is still only about an hours drive from the city and closer to the mountains.

Whatever you do, do NOT move to Northern California anywhere north of Sacramento... Unless you love the heat.

Summer starts here around mid-April and ends around mid-October. The average summer temperature is around 95 degrees between June and September, with heat waves above 104 lasting about 6-8 days at a stretch. A couple of weeks ago we had a high of 114 with a record high low of 85.

It was *HOT*!

So, if you love it hot, pick Northern California. Otherwise, stay away.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention the forest fires that lasted for over 6 weeks... Do you like to smoke... A LOT?

We've made a couple of trips down to the bay area preparing to move there and you can actually feel the temperature change when you come through the foothills. It's a decidedly noticeable drop once you get out of the valley.

Yeah, it's hot in the big valley, but there's a whole large coast line that you can live near, and it's perfect.

Ok, I take it back, yes, stay away from Nothern Cali, I want to retire there in a couple few decades.

Trinity Alps, ftw!

You sell your soul for sarcasm, and a sense of superiority If the cost of living is killing you... it's the frickin cape . Going out to the suburbs around the New Hampshire or Connecticut border will just make property prices drop.. saying it's expensive to live on the Cape is like saying it's expensive to live on Beacon Hill

We have pretty trees, nice weather, small spiders, a sense of history, and lots of little places to explore and to visit. I really adore Massachusetts, we're completely impervious to natural disasters and the people are just awesome. Look how many sl'er Massholes are coming out of the woodwork

Maybe we should do a masshole meetup? We could call it... Boslcon! (bozzlecon? boslicon? masslcon?)

As a displaced Twin Citian , I agree. The city (Mpls - I don't want to talk about St. Paul and disturb its sleep) has a chain of lakes your can bike or run around. There's a refrigerated 400m speedskating oval that is used for inlining during the summer. MN has the best state fair anywhere - and I will impale you on a stick, deep fry you, and eat you if you disagree. It's more liberal than the scary surrounding states (a good thing IMO). And most people are reflexively polite, although not the type to bare their souls.

On the downside, there is hot dish = MN casseroles. My family never ate these weird ass meals, but I know of people who regularly enjoyed a mix of some canned soup, peas, and tuna, sprinkled with potato chips or tater tots. I think this is what the cafeteria in Hell serves every Tuesday. And then there is the double use food/floor cleaner known as lutefisk. As a non-Norwegian, I have only been exposed once to this odd, lye-based culinary treat. I'm still in therapy over it.

I was born and raised in Walpole, lived in NH for awhile... a few yrs in RI and other states/countries. I only came to the Cape to care for an elderly parent, but I guess the point is, I did come back

Like the OP, I am also researching some alternative places. MA high cost of living and some other state issues make it not the right place for me and my business.

But yeah, it still a cool place to be and hard to beat in regard to culture and history.... and Sports!
