I love Massachusetts, and after visiting and staying in a few other states I can only imagine leaving it for another true blue New England spot or maybe upstate New York. Mass has such a sort of camaraderie of elitist, puritan, crazy geeky conservative liberals. We have such a huge knot of colleges, you can trip over them in the city! With the Big Dig and the emerald necklace project, Boston is absolutely gorgeous in some places (every city has its icky holes), and the beach, Providence RI and the Cape are just short drives or train rides away. Temperature wise, winter can be harsh (we've had -30F with wind chill before), but summers are wonderfully mild, very rarely breaking 100F and fall and spring are amaaaazing. New England fall...

Personally, I adore it. I love the people I meet in the city (but I'm young and so are the majority of the college goers, 50% of the population of the Boston area is between 18-30), I love the weather and the variety and the sense of community. But it's expensive to live here, and housing space is at a premium because Mass has a very dense population. It's not that bad, but if you're on too tight of a budget, then maybe Vermont would be better...

I love Dayton. But I also hate it. Eh.. it's a toss up. Housing is totally CHEAP. Would you expect a $200,000 home to be 3000sq ft and in a GREAT neighborhood? We're pretty close to Cincinnati for all the nightlife stuff and concerts and such. We have an airport! It's international! It's pretty cheap too!
We have some great parks and rec, a city busline, major highways.
Summers are hot and humid... Winters are freakin cold. But we always seem to be on the edge. Cincy will get 95 degrees and we'll be.. 90... or Columbus will get 25 inches of snow and we'll just get enough for the kids to go sledding. Even the tornados seem to miss us. Oh! We had a just BARELY feelable earthquake a few months ago.
We have a great system to keep the area from flooding. Soo.. yeah.. no mudslides, wildfires, tsumanis, earthquakes, tornados, floods, hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, or anything that might actually put you on the weather channel.
My roommate moved here from Maine, and she's always telling me that people are so friendly here. I dunno, I think it's a Midwestern thing. We're just darn friendly people. :}

Here's a link to help you out Dayton Daily News | Dayton, Ohio, News and Information

The best parts of town are Kettering, Beavercreek, Miami Twp, Miamisburg, West Carrollton, Springboro, Centerville, Bellbrook, Sugarcreek.
Avoid West Dayton. Avoid old North Dayton. Avoid East Dayton. Prices there are cheap, but they deserve to be cheap. Warren County, just south of Dayton, was named one of the fastest growing counties recently.

Enjoy!

It's beautiful, small, and out of the way. There isn't too much to "do" in the actual city, but if that doesn't matter if your idea of stuff to do is hiking, canoing, sailing and other outdoorsy stuff. My highschool best friend is going to school up in Maine and lives in Portland over the summers. It's on the Amtrak too so Boston isn't too far away. You would definitely need a tough vehicle though to be able to handle the crazy snow, and wildly varying road conditions. Things are pretty far from each other too, and spaced out once you leave the city limits, so gas would be an issue

NYC is probably off limits. Too close to wifey, mentally. She'll be somewhere between there and New Haven.

I've spent time in Maine. For me it was way too white.

It's also poor, unfortunately. And rather dull for someone already living upstate.

If you want a change of pace I would move to a bigger city, honestly. One that is affordable.

I'm telling you Lourdes was making me envious of living in Pennsylvania, given the bang for the buck there, compared to NYC.

See, to me, moving to a less urban, more country environment is really a draw. If you have lived in a small city, and want something different, your choices are big city or real country.

It's up to you which one you would prefer.

Oh I definately recommend the town I'll still be living in for the next two weeks. Just ignore the fact that we're sort of fleeing it ourselves. It's a nice little town if you're white, between the ages of 40 and 80, wouldn't dream of ever not voting republican, and go to church every Sunday.

Hopefully you won't need a job, because there aren't any. There are plenty of overpriced, oversized homes though. And fortunately with the massive foreclosures, there are lots of empty ones to choose from, if you've got 5 or 6 hundred grand.

The town just tripled it's police force and bought all new SUV's (no I'm not kidding) to handle the nonexistent crime rate. It's so nice being constantly reminded of the enormous police presence as you pass a nice shiny black and white on every corner through town, while they fill their ticket quotas, since it's not like they've got much else to do.

And they were very progressive the way they handled the growing homeless problem too. There was this park where way too many homeless were hanging out, sleeping, washing ... you know, living. The city very effectively solved the problem by paving over the entire park and putting in a beautiful water fountain, no benches, no trees, nothing that would attract all those dirty homeless anymore. Voila! Problem solved.

The schools are absolutely fantastic! Last school year when a group of kids (my daughter was one) wanted to participate in the Day of Silence the high school was right on top of it. They sent us parents a lovely note threatening promising to discipline any student who tried to promote the event.

Oh hell with it, we're out of here. We're moving to the Bay Area and looking forward to it! My couch is only a loveseat, but I do have a recliner that's comfy. Of course you'd have to pry the old man's ass out of it first. Good luck with that.

Now, I'll try to make this brief. I'm a Jersey boy born and raised, I swore I'd get out of this place the day I could. I tried, and I can't live anywhere but home.
I've lived in Maine, loved the cold, hated the afforementioned poverty and the unfortunately low IQ. Lived in Florida, Loved the 'quiet cities' and beaches, hated the humidity and worst of all the bugs. Lived in Pennsylvania (my own personal hell) and hated everything from the bizzare laws (by my standards) to the shitty roads and poor drivers. Not to mention that it seems much of Pensy is in the middle of freakin' nowhere. Not to mention, gas prices suck.
I've lived a few places in Jersey, and so far my favorite is Deptford. I live 15 minutes Philly, far enough away not to hear the gun shots, but close enough to frequent South Street. I can take a train ride to NYC if I feel the need to take in a show or see some hobos. Oh, and there's shopping there too. Most of NJ has just enough green not to make me need to check my shoes for bugs, but there are deffinately city spots and the pine barrens where one can get lost and meet the Jersey Devil.
I can show you around, but I don't even own the couch in my house so I can't really offer a spot. Though go bug Fox Stirling and he might let you sleep in our house. ;3
