Yeah, Gigs and Kess were all like, "We're sorry you're a sucker". And I'm all, "It's cool." and Josh is all, "So... Tenshi... what are you wearing?"

Well, that first part is a lie but they did apologize and I'm kind of amused that I totally played into hand in that manner. It's expected though, when I get something unknown that I'm not sure how to deal with I turn to SLU.

heh. Yeah, I depend on you guys. THERE I SAID IT. *sob*

Well, Gigs would have contacted you first 'cause Kess and you are so close, and I think he meant it to be a community activity. As far as geeky coding and open source goes, Gigs was the most obvious choice for putting translatable codes into output and all of that. And.. you know... the site being REGISTERED to him was kind of a tip off

Don't worry Tenshi, you're not a sucker for playing a game. Otherwise I'm a sucker for enjoying Battle for Middle Earth 2.

Well, now I'm just all melancholy because I know they're going to Stroker's thing tonight and I'm not there. Also, have you noticed that it seems to be just you and I on the forum?

No hijinks. Guess I better pick up Josh's slack and start something entertaining on the board here... :\

Heh that was cyansunset.com which just happened to be the same as the name of one of the trailhead pictures.

We are still getting our stuff together on meerkat viewer, but we should have binaries for windows and mac up soon.

We also have our own jira, svn, mailing list, etc.

I did hit him though for making me yell at you.

Much of the music was from the 365 days project, except for the Ren and Stimpy workaday world thing.

WFMU's Beware of the Blog: 365 Days #230 - Outtakes from the 2003 365 Days Project - Part I (mp3s)

Country Song - Rossi Forgione - Outtakes from the 2003 365 Days Project - Part I - blog.wfmu.org

Rossi Forgione - Songs From The North (2000)
07[listen] Flamingo (1:45)
08[listen] Country Song (1:47)
Rossi was a client of our local mental health service and was part of a therapeutic music project that I read about in a local paper. I contacted the owner of the studio where the recordings were done and as I was the only member of the public to show any interest he sent me one of the (only) 50 CD's that had been pressed. Rossi is the highlight of the CD but there are other things of interest on it too. Turns out Rossi is the MC of "Club Wild" a semi-regular "all-abilities" night club that happens here in Melbourne, Australia.

About the Einstein quote... I don't think so, not on this forum. It's a common quote/sig.

Here's some stuff to wrap up the game:

Postscript blog post, read this, it's for you all:
Gigs Shrugged » Blog Archive » Shanti PostScript

All the web scripts source code and images:
http://www.shanti-is-coming.com/shanti.tar.gz

The crypto stuff I wrote by hand to generate some of the ciphertexts:
http://www.shanti-is-coming.com/encrypt.tar.gz

Oh, one more thing to add, I didn't originally imagine that SLU would be the primary place where the game would take place, it just sort of happened that way. You all working together so closely really made things move faster than I expected, which was one reason it did kind of peter out for a few weeks, since I had to work on actually making Meerkat ready for release and testing, rather than writing the ARG.

I'm not sure our goals are the same. They seem to be more about prototyping potential new UIs. We are specifically looking to build a open source developer community, a viewer that can accommodate that developer community, and refocus the viewer from being a way to access a Linden Lab service, to one that is more generic, while still being Linden Lab compatible. We would of course integrate any successful UI they developed.

3. Do you feel the relationship between Imprudence and Meerkat will develop into a rivalry, a competition, or into a harmonic symbiosis with give and take?
I don't think it would be competition. They need more users and more types of users, and only a couple developers. We are looking to build a big developer community. They are looking to make SL approachable and simple, we want to make it more powerful.

I think it's a fallacy that people need to "intuitively know" how to use your UI. There are good practices, but at some point it just comes down to practice and using familiar paradigms.

Using a mouse with Windows for the first time has an extremely steep learning curve, and yet it's implicitly assumed now that everyone understands how the WIMP paradigm works. We shouldn't make up new stuff for the sake of making up new stuff, but there's no reason to change something just because the first hour user often fails to get it.

An example of this is Linden Lab turning on the useless "click to move" nav windows by default now. I'm sure that decision was backed up with tons of usability testing data that showed that new users often couldn't figure out how to move easily.

However it's the wrong solution to the problem. They need to be shown, taught, or indicated to the right solution, not given a more intuitive but ultimately unusable and wrong solution. Moving around the world using those click to move buttons is painful and frustrating. By putting them there, they may very well assume there is no other way to move, and then be frustrated that movement is so difficult.

I guess my point here is, sometimes it's ok to be a little steep on your learning curve, if it means teaching the user the right and ultimately more usable way to do something, especially when the alternative is leading them to believe a wrong way is the only way.
