Business: Desperation Isle Estates | Portland. ![]() Oregon's a gorgeous state and Portland really is a Great Place To Live, but we have this mixed blessing called the Urban Growth Boundary. (You probably know all about that since you lived here.) To prevent urban sprawl like you see in California and much of the midwest, all non-agricultural building has to occur within this boundary that the city maintains. This has the nice, intended effect of preserving the wilderness. (On my drive to work I have miles and miles of suburbs on the left side of the road and miles of farms and mountains on the other.) But it also has the depressing effect of increasing population density as every square inch of open land within the boundary gets converted into apartment buildings and townhouses. In the 9 years we've been here, we've encountered more blackouts, worse traffic, and decreased water pressure year after year, as the population keeps getting more and more dense, but utilities don't scale to accommodate the growth.
