Anyone got a spare left wrist?

(Major sympathy ploy here...if this isn't for you, please move on )

Well, seems my career in SL has come to a finish. I started playing music inworld at the beginning of 2007, and quickly established myself as someone you might want to check out if you had nothing else to do and were in the mood for some off-key sangin'.

Things went great til October, when I had to stop playing for a few months due to a diagnosis of "It's not tendonitis, it's de quervain's tenosynovitis *and* wrist intersection syndrome" (it's since been changed to "Wrist intersection syndrome is just a fancy name for tendonitis", but whatever it is, it hurts like hell).

I've had wrist problems since I was a teenager, but it was either playing or work that finished the wrist off (I do a lot of screwing and unscrewing, pinching, perfect painful wrist type work). When I was moved to another position for a few months, the wrist got better, and I started playing again.

Last month I was moved again, doing the same stuff, and last week, my wrist flared up again. Went back to the Dr. for a cortisone shot (it helped a bit last time), and she said that the next time it flares up, I have to see a surgeon

That comment, plus the fact that the cortisone shot didn't do anything for it this time, plus the fact that by the end of May, I'll have at least one full day of disassembling, cleaning and reassembling something held together by a *lot* of tight (and coated with evaproated metal so they're impossible to loosen) screws, plus the fact that even on a shit load of Advil I can't play for longer than 5 minutes without all sorts of tingly stuff happening (plus a very long run-on sentence) all added up to me deciding to retire from playing in SL.

I had two shows scheduled this week, and had to cancel tonight's as soon as I came home from work due to the pain. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm gonna have to cancel Saturday's too. I was hoping to have a big blowout show, but I don't want to risk a big blowout during the show. So I've played my last show, at least for a long time.

One good thing out of this is I got one of them split-key ergonomic keyboards in January, so typing doesn't hurt that much, so at least I can still *be* in SL.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to come see me play, and for all the kind words y'all gave me. I promise to upload any pics of the inside of my arm I get to my blog, and I'll pass out copies to anyone that wants 'em at SLCC

thats awful. i've had the wrist pain myself because of typing all day at home and playing games at night gets to be too much for me. i can only imagine how it would be if it got worse. and i had to stop something altogether, rather than just cutting back.

so sorry for this to happen to you, you're a good guy. i hope you will still be up to primtionary?

Does your hand go numb? My right hand does and I get a sharp pain. I started wearing a brace and it is a little less painful now. I am kind afraid to go to the doctor with it. Every time I go to the doctor they tell me I need surgery. I'll live with this.

Spaceman,

I'm really sorry to hear about your wrist. That's a major bummer.

He plays guitar, though.

I understand, Space. I'm a violinist, that would be devastating.

Someone needs to get you one of those electric screwdrivers! Or at the very least one of those battery powered drills.

I'm really sorry to hear about your wrist, but if it was a work related injury you might be able to get some sweet compensation, I'll have my fingers crossed for you.

It goes tingly in spots, just below the thumb, tips of fingers, all sorts of fun. And yeah, I have a brace that I've been wearing 24/7 for a week now and I've slept with it for months now.

but my right one is otherwise "occupied"

Yeah, we have electric screwdrivers, but the time it takes to loosen certaing things isn't worth the effort of an electric.

And as far as worker's comp, there's enough history of wrist problems in my medical file (including breaking my right one in a stupid showing off in karate class incident...and that was only two years ago) that any claim I made would be an epic FAIL. I do have great insurance tho, so I'm not worried about that end of things <phew!>

Thanks everyone!

gah

I don't know how applicable this would be to your own wrist situation, but I use one of these to take the edge off the first bits of carpal tunnel when i'm doing full-time typing:

Basically it's a plastic ball with a gyroscope in it... you use it to exercise and rotate your wrist in order to strengthen it. I find it really helps when used for about 10-15 mins at a time.
