When I started in 2007 the discussion was exactly the same on the xstreet merchant forums. Merchants talking about flooding the market with freebies and shaming the full perm sellers. They would kill the market.
There are still people making money and there is an excellent freebie market and tons are sold full perms.

True, but if suddenly for example all popular LAQ skins and Truth hair becomes full perm for anyone to pick up for free, im sure alot of hair and skin creators will suffer a huge blow. These things might not entirely kill the market but it would hurt the market alot.

I know there are still people making money creating new content. It's just a bit scary that anyone with high skills could do alot of damage to businesses if they suddenly decide to give it all away. Apart from the market damage it will eventually make alot of talented creators quit who were here for their business. So In my opinion that would be a big loss as well.

It's much more likely than not that LAQ learned their craft by studying the Eloh Skins -even if not, most of the other skin makers did.

It's called "standing on the shoulders of giants", by giving away her templates, Eloh raised the standard of the art -but she did so in such a way that it benefitted everyone.

And, just for the record, protectionism is bullshit, and it harms more than it helps, and it's a totally fucked-up thing to propose in general.

That happened in the past. I remember slave collars, sex beds and off shore islands, dumped for free and full perms, scripts and animations by (at that time) leading creators.
These items are still sold and made by others and commercially successfully.

I know, and that's a good thing, same as blender tutorials and examples. Those things are good because it will encourage people to start exploring their creative sides and make new content for SL.

At the time, everyone screeched, howled about the death of the skin market and ...turned around, learned and made better products.

If we had protectionist measures set in place, she would not have been able to put her templates out there, and we would still be walking around in 2007-era skins. *shudders*

We got forums, websites with examples and downloads (even from wiki you can download templates) and youtube and also lots of different groups in SL focused on sharing ideas. You don't need a shop to share creative ideas and download links to photoshop templates. There's alot of great multi talented graphic artists on SL as well, I think it's a bit of an insult to say that none of the people around would be skilled enough to create a decent skin today. And if it wasnt a great designer releasing templates to the public there's still copy bot that did a great job at exporting raw material for examination and reproduction. Besides that, the way skins are made for SL is nothing unique. Creating skins could also be learned by watching people's work on other game platforms. Neverthless, kudos for anyone trying to inspire others by sharing their work

Also, a huge lol to suggesting people copybot products if they want to de-construct it to make their own.

Why is it you hate open source so much that you'd present theft as a viable alternative to it?

Is it because you don't understand that copybotting is theft -or that you don't understand that open source is not?

You don't get my point. I never said anywhere that I hate open source material. I tried to explain that even if it would be illegal in SL to share your work that there's plenty of other resources available on the internet where those templates could have been legally downloaded and discussed. So I think the chances of everyone running around in noobie skins today if SL didnt allow us to share inside SL would be 0%. And copy botting is wrong but im sure that back in the days when it was a hype that alot of people learned from copying stuff to examine and mess around with.

Wait, we dont know that for sure yet. Let's wait for one of your troll buddies to agree with your post first (and some random noobies maybe).
I dont follow you around stop being paranoid. I read the forums like anyone else, it's just that your nonsense always catches everyone's attention. Not sure if you're doing that on purpose or not

Given the progress, or is that decay, of the number of estate sims this month, will we go below the 22,000 barrier by the end of August?

The large landowners seem to be holding their own, but the smaller ones seem to be bailing out nowadays.

Concurrency continues to trend downwards. I wonder if Mr. Humble knows how to play the fiddle.

Music to my ears. I thought you had it all figured out? Your statement that "large landowners seem to be holding their own" is quite accurate in that not all is hunky dory for us either. We are holding our own by absorbing large vacancies that easily match the size of average Atlas estates. That is a heavy cloud still weighing over the SL grid and it will keep the prices depressed for some time still, until more estates fall off the grid.

My estimate, before things turn around and the market can again support healthy in-world prices, is that another 600 sims need to come off the grid.
