To most people, IMHO, SL is a online game. I love being creative, I love the freedom of expression we have in SL, but to most of the population, its something to arse about on in the evenins and weekends.

If you want to compare it to other worlds though its similar. Googles attempt, Cyber Town, the old original MTV 3d chat rooms, has anyone got any numbers on Blue Mars or the Sims?

The people they think they want to attract are already in Second Life. But they just don't like the way they look or act.

When they think artist, they have a vision in their minds of some yuppie dilettante hanging around yuppified San Francisco. When really artist communities were more like San Francisco in the 60's or the Beats in NY in the 50's. They are James Joyce's hero in "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" or Henry Miller's grifters in "Tropic of Cancer". We are talking weird, weird and dirty people.

Linden Lab thinks they get weird and counter culture. But they don't. Not at all. Second Life is counter culture despite them.

Whether or not Second Life is commonly perceived as a game is inconsequential to the point that LL don't listen to their customers, or observe how their software is used, so they can leverage those needs and desires to better promote and facilitate its adoption.

Even as people migrate away, not necessarily to other games or virtual worlds, just simply away, the Lab refuse to see through the hippy dream cloud described above. We can argue comparisons all day; bold cold fact is Linden Lab are fly fishing with corn stalks and grandfather clocks.

I was excited about SL mesh when it was announced. Then they hobbled it with cost formulas based on plywood PC's, left the avatar appearance implementation broken, and totally forgot about proper materials. So my interest waned.

Average concurrency on Mars hovered around 10 people in the days when newbies were still arriving, and people were launching new levels (cities) and updates on a regular basis. Since they stopped development a year ago, it's about as close to zero as a Helium-3 refrigerator (~0.2 K above absolute zero).

I was making the point that nearly all virtual worlds have their peak then begin to decline. Whether its a sharp drop or slow drop is usually the only difference. Which rarely seems to have anything to do with what the game makers think or do.

I disagree. But theres no point arguing with you on that one because your quite set in that opinion and theres really no point in me trying to change it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't feel like we're getting all that much of a bargain because enjoying moderately good performance shouldn't be an upgraded feature; we were long overdue for even something approaching mediocrity. The new features are wonderful... but some really basic user-focused functionality, like group chat, is still broken and we're still lacking some highly prized wish list items like stealth-mode entry when we log in.

All too often, I find myself thinking "Well it's about damn time!" rather than "Oh, neat, new feature." So even under improved management, LL is still digging itself out of a very very deep hole for having ignored users for years while they were in pursuit of coporations or someone, but not us.

As for pricing... money is tight all over. So paying through the nose for an entertainment expense is harder and harder to justify. The homestead pricing debacle still rankles for me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Even though I wasn't personally affected by it, that betrayal of residents blasted any shred of trust that I was naive enough to hold. No matter how much good news LL may release, my first reaction seeing an announcement is imminent is to brace myself with a "How are they going to screw us over this time?"
I have a lot of respect for you jod of creator, still i can say you that LL improvements in these years are OS related only. The code is better, faster and with less bugs. But from an hardware point of view the situation is absurd. Back to 2007 SL was on dual socket dual core cpus rack servers, for a total of 4 full sims/rack server aka one sim for core, now we are at 24 full sims/rack server aka one full sim/thread (two threads for core). In this situation the performance is sub-optimal....whorse than in 2007; the 24 full sims need to share the IO resources and the storage, with common drop in performances when SOME full sims are under heavy utilization.
Homesteads are a disaser.....with numerous drops in time dilation even with few scripts up. The low street price of an HS reflects my considerations; customer want to pay the right price for a bad service......8000/9000 l$ /HS are old prices without a common sense now. Many Estates have dropped hundreds HS in past weeks...why?? customers do not want them.
No the service is very bad, trust me.
A real 'new feature' would be one core/sim with one thread for geometry, simulation and phisycs and one thread for SCRIPTS.
But LL don't want this because it is in a suicide mode by default. That is.........

SL hardware is not my specialty, but 24 full sims per server does not seem accurate to me. I could swear it was more like 8 full sims per server, and 24 homesteads.

Other than finding the price a bit of a strain, I'm delighted with my homestead and the performance I've gotten from it. I have a fully built out sim, 3 low-traffic stores, and have had up to 30 meeroos scampering about. I keep a close eye on scripts, but I'm actually impressed with how much more I've been able to run than I expected.

It's still 1 per core not 1 per thread 4 Full regions on a class 5 server & 8 on a Class 7 (mainly Mainland / Nascera) . There are also no more than 3 Homesteads to a core but with a maximum of of 20 to 21 per Server not 24.

This week's sim drop seems rather small if I'm reading it right. Only about a 43 sim drop or so.

That isn't even worth a Holy Moly!, or a Holy Molybdenum!

True, but you should see all the bots at Barbarossa. That is worth a holy moly or two, given that this is a Linden sim, and all the bots are Linden bots, using Metabolt.

On the map for that sim I only see about 10 green dots. How many dots were present when you visited?

Are you guessing they're using metabolt or do you have a way to tell?

Info hubs are a common breeding ground for bots. They get the dreaded re-direct when they log in and their intended destination is unavailable, and they aren't sophisticated enough, or don't care enough, to find their way home.

I based it on the way I could tell in the past. Now that LL has removed that ability, I simply remember the past. It is easier to remember the past than the future, although the latter kind of remembering is called prophecy.

I only remember the present. I haven't figured out a use for that kind of memory.

The Grid expanded this week, though only by 12 Regions. Private Estates had net growth of 13 whilst Linden Owned dropped by 1

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 30157 ( 23049 private estates & 7108 Linden owned)
146 new regions were added and 25 returned to the grid, with 160 regions removed (45 were renamed and 1 came and went since last report)

Overall a relatively quiet week with only Dreamseeker Estate showing significant growth (18 Regions). The main Linden Change was the renaming of the Welcome Islands to Destination Islands which I tweeted about yesterday morning (Tyche Shepherd (@tycheshepherd) on Twitter) and Daniel Voyager explored in more detail (see above) Also for those who missed it I also published a New Mainland Census report which you can read here Mainland Census for March 2012

Sneaky Lab sneaked in a sneaky 6 sneaky amazon wilderness regions under my nose last October so I didn't spot them until Blog Bot blurted out the news here at SLU - I wondered what the sniggering was was about .

Caiman, Leech, Tapir , Capybara, Gecko and Piranha can be found to the west of the western Linden Home Continent.

Yes I stumbled upon a couple of them last night - Caiman and Leech - I think. They are incredibly well done, very beautiful, and well worth a look see. One needs to be premium though (yes, I took advantage of the 3 month premium sale going on, but just for the stipend you know.)

I'm thinking of getting another premium anyway, can wait to do the year to get the sale price though.

And LL needs to make pretty sims for everyone to see, else they won't stay to become premium...

Before we dive into this week report I thought I'd announce an addition I've just made to the Gridsurvey API. You can now use Second Life X & Y map coordinates to query the API , returning information about the region currently at that location, previously the user could only query the API using a known region name. I've also made significant optimisations to the historical map data which is now running at c59 million Map UUIDs so if you want to display the second life map history of any region it should be a lot more responsive .Full details of the API can be found at Second Life Grid Survey - API Reference . Now back to our normal schedule:

A net decline of 6 regions this week with Private estates & Linden Owned both down by 3.

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 30151 ( 23046 private estates & 7105 Linden owned)
118 new regions were added and 25 returned to the grid, with 157 regions removed (29 were renamed and 0 came and went since last report)

Azure Islands added 12 regions whilst the Surreal Estate added 9. There were no significant losses detected this week. However the biggest change was a large increase in the number of Class 7 hosted Estate Regions (up c3000 to 10687) and a related decrease in Class 5 hosts. This is the largest jump in Class 7 hosts since their initial roll out.

Breakdown of Host Server Classes by Ownership:
  • Estate - Class 5: 11174
  • Estate - Class 7: 10687
  • Estate - Class Unknown: 1185
  • Linden - Class 5: 4340
  • Linden - Class 7: 2531
  • Linden - Class Unknown: 234

Adult rated regions continued to increase, up 44 to 3390 (11.2% of the grid) whilst general rated fell by 10 to 4588 (15.6%).

Breakdown of current regions by Ownership and Classification:
  • Estate - Adult: 3038
  • Estate - General: 2853
  • Estate - Moderate: 17153
  • Estate - Offline: 2
  • Linden - Adult: 352

Here are the results of the March 2012 Private Estate Survey. based on a sample of 5000 randomly selected private estate regions selected to estimate Full/Homestead/Openspace penetration. The results are as follows:

  • Full Regions : 2550
  • Homestead Regions: 1771
  • Openspace: 16
  • Closed to Public :663

Of the 4359 accessible regions , 58.8% are Full Regions, 40.8% are Homesteads and 0.4% are Openspaces. The Margins of Error are +/-1.32% , +/- 1.32% and +/-0.16% respectively for the three figures figure at the 95% confidence level. This is a big shift to Full regions this month up 2.3% share since last months survey.
During this period Private estates had a net loss of 183 Regions to a total of 23075 representing a monthly decline of 0.8% , similar to last months loss. The proportion closed to public access was up by 0.5% on last month at 13.3%.

4 of the Full Regions were Linden Developed Regions (i.e. sold new with content) and 2 Linden Developed Homesteads were included in the sample. Again as with all previous months this is too small penetration to estimate total number.

721 of the 1771 (40.7%) Homestead regions were at the new non-grandfathered rate, this is a small but non-significant fall of 0.9% from last months (41.6% ).

Taking these figures a good estimate of private estate tier due each month is US$4,897,000 +/- US$56,000 . (Calculated using known grandfathering rates but excludes any academic reductions and is rounded to the closest US$1000), this figure is up on last month's estimate of US$4,842,000 by $55,000 , a non-significant rise of about 1.1%.

The top 20 landowners currently control 33.6% (+/- 1.3%) of private estate regions, This 0.3% up on last month , using list prices their holdings remain unchanged at 28.6% of total private estate tier.

The figures for the top 10 landowners are 24.7% (+/- 1.1%) of regions and 20.2% of tier (the larger estates tend to have a bigger proportion of homesteads than smaller estates). This share for the top 10 is 0.9% up on last months figure of 23.8% of private estate regions.

The Top 10 Full Region/Homestead/Openspace proportions are 40.9%/59.1%/0.0% and 39.5%/60.5%/0.0% for the top 20

The Top 10 Estates by number of regions held are as follows:
  • RGF Estates Inc 4.8%
  • Dreamseeker Estates 3.6%
  • Zoha Islands 2.9%
  • Jessica Chung 2.0%
  • Bell Estates 1.8%
  • Azure Islands 1.8%
  • Lala Rentals 1.7%
  • Fruit Islands Estate 1.7%
  • Victoria Chung 1.5%
  • Miriam Chung 1.5%

The largest climber this month was the Zoha Estate up from 2.1% last time. The ACS total Share of Private Estates fell by 1.2% share to 10.1%( +/-0.8%) after last months large increase.

The Margins of error for these Estate shares range from +/-0.6% for the largest down to +/- 0.3% for the smallest,

These rankings are purely on number of regions owned and are not based on FRE numbers .

March's list for the Estates in 11th to 20th position (In alphabetical order) is
  • Barbie Chung
  • Burdeyna Islands
  • FantasyLand
  • Jewels Islands
  • Kendallwood Virtual Estates
  • Kristaki Hudson
  • Lorena Chung
  • Ohana Land
  • Serena Estates
  • Weezles Real Estate (WRE)

The smallest of these is about half the size of the current estate in 10th position

The regions were running on the following distribution of server class
  • Class 501 8.6%
  • Class 502 5.5%
  • Class 503 26.0%
  • Class 701 26.5%
  • Class 702 23.9%
  • Class 703 9.5%
  • Class 731 0.0%
As reported in last week's report this is a very significant shift from Class 5 hosting to Class 7 . Last months figures for comparison were :
  • Class 501 34.8%
  • Class 502 9.2%
  • Class 503 42.3%
  • Class 701 3.8%
  • Class 702 7.6%
  • Class 703 2.4%
  • Class 731 0.0%

So regions went from 14% hosted on Class 7 Servers to 60%. And kudos to Ciaran Laval for pointing out that there was a corresponding shift from Class 7 to Class 5 hosting on mainland (Estate Sims Get Some Class 7 Loving » Ciaran Laval) which I failed to notice. This implies these are not new servers just a reshuffling of existing Class 7's

In other news - I am going to be away for a few days until Wednesday so there may not be a weekly report this Sunday.
