I don't keep track of that but technically it is always conversion from another type , new regions are never delivered as Adult. But regardless of how old the region was before it switched to being Adult , its still growth in Adult Rated regions

February is rapidly drawing to a close so it's time for this months Private Estate Survey. based on a sample of 5000 randomly selected private estate regions selected to estimate Full/Homestead/Openspace penetration. The results are as follows:

  • Full Regions : 2464
  • Homestead Regions: 1870
  • Openspace: 25
  • Closed to Public :641

Of the 4359 accessible regions , 56.5% are Full Regions, 42.9% are Homesteads and 0.6% are Openspaces. The Margins of Error are +/-1.33% , +/- 1.32% and +/-0.21% respectively for the three figures figure at the 95% confidence level. There is a noticeable shift away from full regions (down 1.0%) since last months survey.
During this period Private estates had a net loss of 177 Regions to a total of 23258 representing a monthly decline of 0.8% , very much down on last months loss (2.3%). The proportion closed to public access was down by 1.8% on last month at 12.8%.

2 of the Full Regions were Linden Developed Regions (i.e. sold new with content) and 2 Linden Developed Homesteads were included in the sample. Again as with all previous months this is too small penetration, down on the 7 observed last month.

778 of the 1870 (41.6%) Homestead regions were at the new non-grandfathered rate, this is a small but non-significant rise of 1.4% from last months (40.2% ).

Taking these figures a good estimate of private estate tier due each month is US$4,842,000 +/- US$57,000 . (Calculated using known grandfathering rates but excludes any academic reductions and is rounded to the closest US$1000), this figure is down on last month's estimate of US$4,920,000 by $78,000 , a significant fall of about 1.6%.

The top 20 landowners currently control 33.3% (+/- 1.3%) of private estate regions, This 1.9% up on last month , using list prices their holdings represent 28.6% of total private estate tier.

The figures for the top 10 landowners are 23.8% (+/- 1.1%) of regions and 19.2% of tier (the larger estates tend to have a bigger proportion of homesteads than smaller estates). This share for the top 10 is 0.7% up on last months figure of 23.1% of private estate regions.

The Top 10 Full Region/Homestead/Openspace proportions are 37.5%/62.4%/0.1% and 37.9%/62.0%/0.1% for the top 20

The Top 10 Estates by number of regions held are as follows:
  • RGF Estates Inc 4.6%
  • Dreamseeker Estates 3.4%
  • Azure Islands 2.2%
  • Zoha Islands 2.1%
  • Lala Rentals 2.0%
  • Miriam Chung 1.7%
  • Jessica Chung 1.7%
  • Jewels Islands 1.6%
  • Bell Estates 1.5%
  • Fruit Islands Estate 1.5%

The biggest changes this week loses in share for most of the Non ACS estates. This months appearance of ACS owned Surreal Chung Estate, holding the purchased holdings of the Surreal Estate , puts ACS total Share of Private Estates up to 11.3%( +/-0.9%) with a huge 3% additional share of private estates added this month.

The Margins of error for these Estate shares range from +/-0.6% for the largest down to +/- 0.3% for the smallest,

These rankings are purely on number of regions owned and are not based on FRE numbers .

October's list for the Estates in 11th to 20th position (In alphabetical order) is
  • Barbie Chung
  • Burdeyna Islands
  • FantasyLand
  • Kendallwood Virtual Estates
  • Lorena Chung
  • Ohana Land
  • Serena Estates
  • Surreal Chung
  • Victoria Chung
  • Weezles Real Estate (WRE)

The smallest of these is about half the size of the current estate in 10th position

The regions were running on the following distribution of server class
  • Class 501 34.8%
  • Class 502 9.2%
  • Class 503 42.3%
  • Class 701 3.8%
  • Class 702 7.6%
  • Class 703 2.4%
  • Class 731 0.0%

There was no noticable shift in hosting class this month, though there was the appearance of a single Class 731 host server.

Survey Details: This survey was based on a random sample of 5000 private estate regions drawn from all 23258 private estates on the grid on 25th February 2012. The actual surveying took place on 25th & 26th February 2012.A further 10 regions were randomly selected to top up the sample, replacing those regions which were unavailable (other than closed to public access) at the time of surveying.

Oh that ain't nothin' Little. The Grid All Hail The Central Grid can lose 106 sims a week for 286 weeks before Linden Lab will notice and entertain the possibility that something might be amiss. That's five-and-a-half years worth of weeks!

Another way to look at it is it will take about three years for the grid to return to the humans per region density of 2007, which would be a good thing, and three years isn't really all that long. I've been here almost twice that long.

Hmmmm. It looks like there may be more changes with the Jessops and their Exotic Estates Islands.

Note to Tyche: There is a very nasty virus on your Second Life Grid Survey website, and it attacks whomever accesses the site.

Interesting you mentioning that. I noticed the other day that McAfee Site Advisor tried to block the gridsurvey site. It was the first time I've ever seen that happen.

Seems ok today however. Are you still seeing your a\v trying to block it or show an alert of some kind still?

And also, HOLY MOLY!.....Am I reading this right in that it looks like this week, the grid has just lost 200+ regions? On Gridsurvey it says the current total is 30183, but last week the total was 30384. What happened to those 201 regions?

Maybe its the unmaintainable sims that got snapped up in the sale and now a month or two on the snapper uppers are like 'Oh golly cock, tiers quite expensive...' and closing down...

Makes sense to me... *Shrugs*

Perhaps that is what happened...

Also, that is the first time I've ever heard that saying before. I would like to throw a holy onto it for effect, however.

Holy Golly Cock!!!

I am not going to try accessing the grid survey site again until Tyche gives the all clear.

I noticed that last Tuesday, the grid had shrunk by 150 estate sims. That was a huge drop in just two days. Now, as you say, even another 50 have gone. I am not surprised.

We will know later today, I guess, what the full shrinkage has been this week when Tyche produces her report. This is like the good ole days of 2009 after the Open Space sim betrayal by LL, when estate sims shrunk by around 5000 over a space of about 7 months.

I have been trying to keep track of what has been happening with those estate sims bought during LL's special sale, last October. I have just been monitoring 10 of those sims. Two months ago, 3 of the 10 were gone. Now, 4 of those 10 are gone. This sample is not big enough to really have an accurate picture, but if it is accurate to any extent, it appears that this special sale was a big flop, if LL did this to see if waving set-up charges could help to expand the grid.

(pssst, some of these 10 I chose at random, were bought by some of the larger land owners, and these ones remain on the grid.)

Not entirely a flop. It bought in a higher revenue for a few months from October 11 - March 12, and even if just 1-2 sims out of 10 remain, the grid has still grown significantly.

I am aware the grids on a general shrink at the moment too, but its been shrinking slowly scince... What... May 2010? The same year the real world ran out of money.

Thank you for reporting this - though I only saw this for the first time this morning. I've cleared up the infection and I'm pretty sure the door used is now bricked up (an unpatched 3rd party web log analysis package which is no longer installed)

That is one huge moly.....Holy Moly!!!!

....please don't call me Frankly.

"The phrase, "Holy Moly," is an exclamation of surprise initially used by the Captain Marvel Comic-Book characters created in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker. Those characters (and the expression "Holy Moly") first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (February 1940) and Fawcett Comics (1939–1953); for details see Captain Marvel (DC Comics). Not to be confused with "Holy Mold," popularized by Alison Steffy in 2011."

It brought in higher revenue for about 8 weeks, then the gradual decline that was being experienced for about 18 months, took an even bigger nose dive. It was very notable.

This special sale alienated many of the larger land owners and affected their business negatively. To my knowledge, one threw in the towel and sold out, and another one cancelled sims right, left and centre and is nearing bare bones.

I am aware there was a drop. I believe the grid will keep shrinking for a while at least too as it often feels quite big and empty nowdays. But there was also more sims bought online and for a temporary time at least, a higher revenue produced for LL. So there has been a positive, and its not a 'total flop'.

Its remarkable SL has the population it does after all this time without the mass exodus most MMO's suffer after a couple of months / years.

Ironically, I have always been a strong advocate of LL waving set-up costs for regions, as this would widen the market base for their purchase. Also, the set-up charges do not reflect the economic realities of a sim's value.

For instance, if you pay LL $ 1,000 US for a full prim estate sim, and want to unload it the very next day, you would be lucky to get even $ 300 US for it in a full transfer agreement. It is like buying a new car and when you drive it off the dealership's parking lot, the value of that car drops considerably. But people still buy new cars.

However, given the complexities of the land market within SL, and with the special arrangements LL has made with the larger land owners, and considering that these larger land owners own about 30% of the estate sim market, I now see that waving set-up charges even for a short period of 2 days, can cause a huge ripple effect lasting for months.

Waving set-up charges on new sims on a permanent basis, could in fact be the trigger for a total collapse of the estate land market in Second Life, unless it was done in consultation with the larger land owners, with even further concessions given to them being the end result. For LL, it is a no-win situation except to leave things alone, and perhaps make a better standard Viewer first, before messing with a complex land economy.
