Not by my calculations. I use the factor of 4.33. Thus to get it to where apples are apples, the monthly tier fee for a full prim estate sim is $295.00.

When one collects 18,000 L per week, the full month collection will be 18,000 X 4.33 = 77,940 L. Based on today's exchange price of Lindens to US dollars, 77,940 L will yield $291.52 (estimated proceeds). A loss of $3.48.

Yes, I know these exchange rates fluctuate day by day, but not by that much to give yield a profit at that rate of 18,000 L per week.

I dunno where you sell, but the Lindex right now at the "instant selling rate" of 249 gives you 301.67 Dollar for those L$ 77.940. Even if the rate went down by 5 points (didn't have such fluctuations in many months) it still would give you the needed 295 Dollar.

My calculation btw was done with the average month of 30.42 days, so (18.000/7)*30.42 --> 78.223 --> 302,76 at todays "instant selling rate".

Anyways... It shows that 18k/week is enough to cover the 295 real dollars. Not a real profit, but there could be reasons for that. Like someone who owns only one full prim region, but also one or more homesteads. If he gave up the FP, he would also lose the homestead(s). Renting the FP out at cost or next to no profit, could be an attempt to be able to keep everything. (I actually *do* know someone like that, he is looking for a renter for his only FP.)

Also, it could be a grandfathered FP - in that case it would be a really nice profit, hehe.

It has been a while since I exchanged Lindens, but I do believe that the "estimated proceeds," was the amount I received, which would be a slight loss.

It is a rather large land baron who is currently leasing FP sims now at 18,000 L per week, and quite a few of them at that rate in fact. They are not moving very quickly either. I wonder why people aren't jumping on this tremendous deal. Oh well.

Ah, I found your mistake. You are using Lindex Market Sell - you have to go to switch your Lindex Preferences to Limit Sell. There you can see how many L$ are set for sale at what rates at this very moment. Right now some 76 million at a rate of 248. If you put your L$ for sale at that rate, they will sell in a couple of days. If you set them for sale at 249, you will have your real dollars within minutes.

Here are the results of the September Private Estate Survey

As with previous months, its a survey of 5000 randomly selected private estate regions which I use to estimates Full/Homestead/Openspace penetration. The results are as follows:

  • Full Regions : 2476
  • Homestead Regions: 1835
  • Openspace: 24
  • Closed to Public :665

Of the 4335 accessible regions , 57.1% are Full Regions, 42.3% are Homesteads and 0.6% are Openspaces. The Margins of Error are +/-1.33% , +/- 1.33% and +/-0.20% respectively for the three figures figure at the 95% confidence level. There is a very tiny shift away from full regions since last months survey.
During this period Private estates had a net loss of 106 Regions to a total of 24129 . The proportion closed to public access was down by 0.3% on last month at 13.3%.

5 of the Full Regions were Linden Developed Regions (i.e. sold new with content) and 4 Linden Developed Homesteads were included in the sample. Again as with all previous months this is too small penetration to reliably track but is slightly up on previous months.

733 of the 1835 (40.0%) Homestead regions were at the new non-grandfathered rate, this is a small but significant rise of 1.0% from last month (38.1% ).

Taking these figures a good estimate of private estate tier due each month is US$5,052,000 +/- US$60,000 . (Calculated using known grandfathering rates but excludes any academic reductions and is rounded to the closest US$1000), this figure is down on last month's estimate of US$5,089,000 by $37,000 , a fall of about 0.7% within the margin of error.

The top 20 landowners currently control 31.4% (+/- 1.2%) of private estate regions, This 0.1% up on last month , using list prices their holdings represent 25.6% of total private estate tier.

The figures for the top 10 landowners are 22.8% (+/- 1.1%) of regions and 14.2% of tier (the larger estates tend to have a bigger proportion of homesteads than smaller estates). This share for the top 10 is up from last months last months figure of 22.7% of private estate regions.

The Top 10 Full Region/Homestead/Openspace proportions are 38.2%/62.8%/0.0% and 34.1%/65.7%/0.1% for the top 20

The Top 10 Estates by number of regions held are as follows:
  • RGF Estates Inc 5.7%
  • Lala Rentals 2.5%
  • Dreamseeker Estates 2.4%
  • Zoha Islands (new) 1.9%
  • Bell Estates 1.8%
  • Lorena Chung 1.5%
  • Fruit Islands Estate (New) 1.5%
  • Azure Islands 1.4%
  • Kendallwood Virtual Estates 1.4%
  • Victoria Chung 1.3%

The biggest change this week was Lala Rentals moving up into 2nd place with a share change of 0.6%, Dreamland ACS had a fall of 0.8% share pushing it down into the 11th to 20th positions, Some of this loss was through transfers to the ACS owned Chung Sister Estates, 3 of which are now in the Top 10 estates along with ACS's Azure Islands.Overall known ACS Estates collectively have the largest share of Private Estates at 7.9%, 0.7% down on last month.
The Margins of error for these Estate shares range from +/-0.6% for the largest down to +/- 0.3% for the smallest,

These rankings are purely on number of regions owned and are not based on FRE numbers .

Septembers's list for the Estates in 11th to 20th position (In alphabetical order) is
  • Bonaire Estates
  • Dreamland ACS
  • FantasyLand
  • Jessica Chung
  • Jewels Islands
  • Kristaki Hudson
  • Miriam Chung
  • Ohana Land
  • Serena Estates
  • Surreal Estates

The smallest of these is about 2/3rds the size of the current estate in 10th position

The regions were running on the following distribution of server class
  • Class 501 38.8%
  • Class 502 7.2%
  • Class 503 44.2%
  • Class 701 2.5%
  • Class 702 6.7%
  • Class 703 0.6%

There was no observable shift in distribution of Server Classes

Survey Details: This survey was based on a random sample of 5000 private estate regions drawn from all 24129 private estates on the grid on 24th September 2011. The actual surveying took place on 24th September 2011.A further 7 regions were randomly selected to top up the sample, replacing those regions which were unavailable (other than closed to public access) at the time of surveying.

Is first time I see Lala in your stats. They come from nowhere to top 2 ?
Where is Fantasy World Estates ? Last month they had 1.9% . They even aren't in top 20 anymore
Fruit Islands should be in top 10 too (around pos. 6)
Stats of our estate are wrong also. We should be at pos. 4 with 2.2%

Lala Rentals has always been in the top 10 but labelled as Fantasy World Estates. FWE turns out to be a sub Tenant of Lala Rentals, this was corrected in August and ongoing the estate holdings will be shown as Lala Rentals.

Zoha , Fruit Islands and the Luxory Estates each keep their holdings in two groups. This month I had not combined the constituent groups for these estates - I have now corrected that and updated the rankings to show this.

Tyche, I don't generally release any stats at all, but noted that Caledon Oxbridge traffic by first day residents was down by about 44% this week, as compared to last week, or most recent weeks really.

That sort of thing generally only happens if there are deep structural changes going on. For instance, it's back around levels seen before the Basic Viewer came out ~ when the basic viewer came out our levels more than doubled.

Maybe all this is something to do with V3, I don't know.

Any speculation as to what's going on? I honestly don't know quite yet, but I do know this isn't all just 'back to school' market timing. New resident stats and long term region stats are most certainly not correlated, but, someone's messing with things, I think. Also... the region dropoff could be just one of those random 'rogue wave' stats without underlying significance, but... it's got my attention.

The Region drop off feels more administrative - lots of small holdings going and we are not really seeing big changes in large estates. Actual new regions this week is lowish but not a massive slump on past weeks , it's the gross number of regions leaving the grid which is up.

Reported sign ups are not really any different from past weeks.

This is troubling.

Reason I say that, is that small holdings of private estates are closer to actual end user consumer demand, than the big estate decisions.

The big estates will eventually follow whatever the actual demand is, but in the interim may well do what they often do, which is 'tough out' the bad times, knowing they will be the ones left standing when weaker competition folds.

That said... this may be more of a rogue wave than anything else. It's back to school time, the real world economy fears spiked again, it's not yet winter cold and dark (good for the grid)... wouldn't be surprised if this is just a momentary anomaly.

As for new user signups, if those are flat and Oxbridge is suddenly about half off, something's funny there. We certainly aren't doing anything different. There may be some A/B testing going on for new signups, or something.

Thanks for the stats, as ever!

Thanks for the clarification.

Isn't it maybe better to do the same with Dreamland?

Des, I think I might have the answer for you. You need to read today's adult content transcript when it's posted here https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Adu...ent_User_Group

Any chance you (or anyone) could do a one or two sentence 'spill'? It's not like I'd disbelieve you... and it's not posted yet.

Got a nasty head cold or something and not up for usual grid biz, or chasing down stuff. Usually my contacts are pretty good but this has been a really 'off' week for me, and chatting on skype with a sore throat... bleah.

the answer is apparently gateways were an abject failure compared to normal LL welcome areas when it came to retention rates (I'm paraphrasing).

My assumption is they're diverting people away from you (and other gateways that are left) in a desperate effort to keep people coming back.

I had to laugh though - they've just decided who the "lucky" people are who get to run the adult content gateway, and one of the carrots they dangled was that they'd divert any interested sex fiend newbie there.. If their stats and your experience are to be believed I'd say the retort should be "yeah right"

believe it or not, they seem to now think that adult content should be embraced - hence the changing of the verification procedure, the offering of an exclusive adult gateway and seriously encouraging us to enter the destination guide.

of course, they won't do things like fix search so that anything for sale on adult land, no matter how innocuous can be found (the weighting they apply to anything on adult is ridiculous) nor anything as simple as sending the email to tell people that they've changed the verification process as they promised (apparently it's too hard for them to include a quick para in any of their marketing emails they send out) or any of the other things we've asked for. I suppose I should feel honoured that when I suggested they make some adult premium sandboxes they actually did so.

I'm not quite overcome by the smell of desperation and failure yet but they're certainly on track for the normal LL success we've grown to expect.

I don't even know where to begin, with a statement like that... though I believe you are paraphrasing correctly and am not blaming you as a messenger any way of course (I hope that's obvious).

First: some gateways were special interest, like say, for people from the Netherlands. Retention for people from Netherlands: WAY higher than it would have been. Overall stat: negligible, because, well, there aren't that many of them.

Second: some gateways weren't... anything. As in: nobody bothered to develop it at all. Joined the program, tossed some prims out with vague instructions maybe, and then just... left it to rot. Why? No motivation to do more. None.

Third: Some gateways, like mine, blew standard LL welcome areas _away_ when it came to retention and a bunch of other stats. There's a reason why they left the new resident stream going to a few gateways, and then even, as Prok says, 'welded' them into the basic viewer. It's because they are *that worthwhile*.

Now, most notably, was scale. I could certainly have scaled Oxbridge waaaay up, its success could have been duplicated *easily* in dozens of places, but, scale costs... specifically in terms of land. So here I was, forget about everything else, spending 295 a month. Net benefit for Caledon: negligible. We taught people how to go Premium. Then they created Linden Homes. My small parcel business has _never_ recovered from that. Now, was I about to deploy another dozen Oxbridges for 3540 USD/month?

The logical thing would have been: X credits toward Caledon (the estate's) tier for every resident retained via Oxbridge + expansions. Doing that for anyone who could build a gateway with solid stats, like mine or Faery Crossing or Solace Beach just to name a few, would have made all the difference.

But why bother? We were *paying* to retain their residents... who then went premium and off to the mainland, and Linden Homes in direct competition to my estate. This is so fundamentally fucked up, it's hard to explain to any normal person that this is how it actually worked. Megacorporation allows you to not just work for free, but *pay* to enhance their bottom line... and what was even crazier? People DID. Robin was crafting something to at least make it fair... when she was no longer with the company, I should have dumped it. Oxbridge remains to this day only because some residents on the estate really enjoy it. Stats wise it's been doing better than ever.

So, that's the story there.

Someday someone at exec level will notice what happened in 2008 ~ 2010, will get to explain it to the board or shareholders, and when they do, they will probably wish they had carnival music accompanying their presentation.

Anyway... back to Tyche's thread, I suppose if this becomes a big enough subject it can be split off, though, I'm pretty much done with the whole thing.

Abject was probably too hard a word Des. More like the success rate of welcome areas is substantially better than gateways (not much difference really if they have taken the newbie flow away from you but I suppose it sounds better). I'm afraid I typed it in one of those bitter moments. I wasn't really paying that much attention last night as I was also dealing with a few IMs but I did think to ask for clarity on their claim to make sure. My chat history is a mess because of the IMs that also get dumped to it and I'm lazy enough not to want to clean it up unless I have to but if their transcript isn't posted in the next day or so I'll clean mine up and send it to you.

The other thing I seem to remember was viale saying that the gateways were put in the destination guide and I got the impression he seemed to think this was a better thing for the gateways anyway (can't remember why).

Now I may be putting 2 & 2 together and getting 5 but it is so typical of LL that it seems to fit. they didn't like the stats, they changed the flow and didn't bother to tell the people who are paying them money to do their job for them. Call me bitter cynic, but let's face it, unless they can successfully parasite off their customers they really don't give a shit about them as we both know.

Well, that's the thing, they *didn't* take new resident flow away from the ones that were doing well... only the ones that weren't doing well. The name 'community gateway' is gone but we've seen more at Oxbridge than ever, since the 'closure' of the program. We were doing so well, we made it into the Basic Viewer (totally unknown to me at the time) and our traffic actually doubled.

It's nothing I really worry about, personally, these days. I lost 10,000 on it; I won't lose more. Oxbridge has sponsors and they seem to enjoy it, so... that's wonderful. Me, I can't afford dealing with it, I'm busy raising 1000 a week to keep my kid at the university, and that doesn't leave a lot of room for paying extra to help out corporations making 10's of millions annually.

Two weeks ago the Viewer switched to being 3.0.3 - there are still a number of problems with logging on to this viewer or crashing. I imagine new residents will be less tolerant of this (or know how to get round it) than the rest of us.
