It seems no surveys were run on the 26th and 27th - However 25th had a total grid size of 31533 - I suspect any change from the 31546 on the 19th was all Private Estates

We need the bot count in there, the bot count!

Add the bot count. I'll pay you $1500L.

We know you have the technology to add the bot count.

Hey, maybe the bots are leaving and that is why concurrency has been taking such a big hit. I bet that is Philip's explanation to Mitch Kapor and gang.

Another off-the-wall question: Is your database able to be sorted by coordinates? I have another "Seconderth" project in mind, to visit and photograph the "ends of the world as we know it", the farthest sim in each direction.

I can (and will) use the SLurl map, of course, but a means of verification would be nice, too.

You can download a list of all current regions and their x & y coordinates on my Second Life Grid Survey site - It's the Current Region List Button on the home page

However to save you the trouble currently the two regions furtherest apart are Sunny Skies at x=523,y=321 and NextEd at x=919,y=2017 which are 445.8km apart , However NextEd is closed to public access so the 2nd pair where both are open to the public are Sunny Skies (again) at x=523,y=321 and GoldenSand Island 002 at x=937,y=1932 which are 425.8km apart

But these are Estate regions. Wouldn't the Lab make more Mainland regions to accommodate our new visitors? I tried going to them, but access was denied. It made me almost cwry.

I tried to teleport there and access denied. I got a screengrab of the regions here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/danielvoyager/5338309641/

An interesting revelation which has come out is the intent to create a teen-only land category, something which many younger residents had been pushing for. The Linden-owned Teen Only areas will apparently be Bonobos Island 1 through 4. No word yet on if teens will be able to make their own islands teen-only.

Off current topic, but apparently SL New England is in serious trouble. There has been a group formed to save it. SLNE is kind of like the flagship sim collection for the United Sailing Sims of Second Life (USS-SL).

I can confirm that re: SLNE. I briefly looked into buying it. The problem is, it's mostly grandfathered Homesteads with 2 of the full sims being grandfathered as well. All would lose that status on transfer, making the existing tier rates for residents financially unsustainable, and therefore likely leading to massive loss of tenants. Doing a not-full-transfer would be risky and more hassle than I personally want.

It's only 7 regions, and also smack dab in the middle of the USS, so not very practical for anyone looking to expand or acquire a Blake Sea connection (which I'd love, believe me.) It makes the most sense for one of the adjoining USS estate owners to buy it out.

And thus the Linden Lab land pricing and transfer policies strike a big one here. Only a top ten land baron could probably wangle a deal to keep the grandfathered fees in tact. But then, 2 or 3 of them are the core of the entertainment and commercial activity of SLNE - Mystic, Natucket and New England, I believe. It would be a real headache for a large land baron to take those three sims over and maintain the renting of shops and the arrangement of live music acts.

I remember emailing the owner of these 7 sims last month when I found out she had to find a buyer real fast. I suggested to her to contact all the other estate owners in the USS-SL. I believe there are around 10 of them in total. The irony of this is, all those other estate owners, except for one, are her major competitors. If those 7 sims go, the bridge to the Blake Sea will be gone too, and Sudane will have to move some sims around to bridge the gap. Oh Lordy, this is bad. I really like SLNE so much - it is an area I haunt frequently, and even owned some land on Martha's Vineyard for a couple of months.

If it had been more sims I would have tried to wrangle a deal, who knows if it would work though. I don't like the idea of being sandwiched in the middle of a bunch of other land barons. Attached, sure, but not boxed in with no room to grow or rearrange. I really don't understand why none of them have stepped up. Do they want a big hole in their continent? Maybe they can't afford the new Homestead rates either. I'm sure the other USS Homesteads are grandfathered.

The estate in serious trouble is a small part of the New England area, New England Village, as mentioned here, 7 sims in the SW corner of New England. They are owned by Gayle Cabaret. The rest of New England is an estate called New England Islands, which is owned by myself, Sudane Erato. The Islands are NOT going away, and although we are surely struggling these days like every residential estate, will definitely be here in the months and years to come.

Here is a map of the configuration:
Map of New England - New England Islands

There is not much anyone can do to help the Village except to buy it from Gayle. The problems pointed out elsewhere in this thread are in fact real, and of course, all grandfathering is lost if the sims are transferred. Right now, two of the four full sims are grandfathered, and 2 of the 3 homesteads.

There is an additional issue. Any new owner of these sims must be approved by the other owners of the USS-SL group. The Lindens have recently affirmed our right to determine the members of our community. This is not to say that purchase is not possible, only that any buyer will need to agree with the overall goals of the community.

As is also mentioned here, should the Village disappear, we will shift our Island sims to reconnect with the group.

Anyone who sincerely wishes to help our community, but who is not in a position to consider buying the Village sims, should simply buy or rent in the Islands. All residential estates are suffering mightily under the ill-conceived land policies of LL, and if people do indeed want to help they should consider investing their money in the estates that will be left behind.

Thanks for taking up this topic, and thank you Ayesha for bringing this to my attention.

There's your answer. If they really were big competitors you'd bet they'd want those sims for themselves.

This week the main grid contracted by 17 regions, all Private Estates

I also made an administrative change which correct 15 Linden Regions incorrectly classified as Private Estates (Last weeks arrivals of 4 Teen Grid Bonobo Isles and a further 11 regions in close proximity to these).

Total number of Main Grid regions is now 31487 ( 24811 private estates & 6676 Linden owned)

Jessica Chung (ACS) added 24 regions to her holdings and Phoenix Seelowe Estate grew by 10 regions , whilst Dreamland ACS dropped 53 regions, a further unknown estate lost all 11 regions (Berlin City) and the 9 region Fear Estate went offline

134 new regions were added and 42 returned to the grid, with 196 regions removed (42 were renamed and 4 came and went since last report)

  • Linden - Class 7: 5243
  • Linden - Class Unknown: 171

Adult Rated regions gained 24 this week to a total of 2391 whilst General Rated also increased by 4 regions to 4542

The USS-SL and particularly SLNE, I have monitored for about a year now. At one time, Sudane owned all of SLNE, but before the deadline for disallowing grandfathering pricing to pass through on transfer, Sudane and Gayle reorganized SLNE, Gayle taking on 7 sims, now called NEVillage, and Sudane holding the rest. However, 3 of the NEVillage sims are, at least what I would consider, the heart and soul of the Sundane-Gayle holdings. This is where the shops are located, and where the entertainment area is located - this is what makes this area of USS-SL so great, and which also creates and binds the community.

However, over the past year, I have noted real struggles for SLNE. In the beginning of 2010, even though the full sim prim parcels were hard to unload, virtually all of the Homesteads, which is the majority of the sims in total, sold well. Then about 4 to 6 months ago, even the Homesteads were hard to move.

The deal may seem sweet, but as Sudane mentioned, residential land is really a struggle these days. SLNE's charging a price for land, plus the tier, may be an inpediment, although this has not affected Sailor's Cove. But then as for Sailor's Cove (another USS-SL), it publicizes that one can simply lease their parcels rather than "purchase". SLNE has not done the same thing, although I have been told by one resident of SLNE that leasing is an option, but I have never seen this publicized. Given that tier is quite a bit higher here, and for good reason, adding a purchase price to a parcel or a Homestead is discouraging, since most know by now that resale possibilities are next to nil in today's market.

In any event, this has very little to do with the current issue of Gayle's 7 sims possibly going under. (Rumour has it that at least one may go offline even today as "we speak.") I am parked on Nantucket right now, acting like a captain whose ship is about to sink, willing to go down with it.

Gayle has locked all the rental boxes everywhere, as far as I can see, so that no one gets hit with a loss by mistakenly renting some place if the sim is about to go offline forever.

To know that USS-SL must approve of the new owner, which I can understand, really adds a layer to the process that virtually makes buying these 7 sims in a jiffy, an impossible task.

I never understood the sweetness of the deal. I seriously don't understand the statement "The Lindens have recently affirmed our right to determine the members of our community." Well, yeah, any community with estates or Mainland holding has the right to determine their membership. When have the Lindens ever interfered with that?

My impression was the USS community threatened to migrate to Opensims over the homestead pricing changes and LL "caved" into adding a load of ocean homesteads to the Mainland and allowing the USS to attach some estates. This seemed like a sweet boon to us old timers who offered to pay good money for such privilege in past days. But it obviously hasn't done them any good as those estates are "suffering mightily under the ill-conceived land policies of LL" and about to lose their Mainland connection.

After all, it doesn't seem very sweet for USS or worth the bad will LL have incurred from the general population over the deal.

The SLNE Situation

I have been alerted of this discussion here at SL Universe and have been asked to comment. There is so much to comment on.

I along with my partner Nber Medici, own the 43 or so sims between SLNE on the north and Sailor’s Cove on the south, which we refer to as the Hollywood Complex and which is marketed under the name Hollywood Real Estate. Because of LL’s less than elegant land sale system we do want a number of other Real Estate Brokers do, we LEASE land (ie. You pay a monthly tier only (ie. no upfront “purchase”). However to advertise that the land is avaialbe for lease on the big MAP we set the land “for sale”. When a potential leasee comes by the info card on the land walks him/her thru a process to “buy the land” for the equivalent of one week’s rent. A notice is sent to us and we meet with the leasee. We refund the “downpayment” then help them set up their lease.

The USS began when then owner of the SLNE sims physically joined the Hollywood Complex. The USS has grown to 11 sim owners and some 180 sims. Subsequently LL approached the USS and the Blake Sea Community Partnership was born.

Last year Sudane sold six of her SLNE sims to Gayle Caberet. Subsequently Gayle has, or so we read, abandoned the sims. Since the USS has a policy that no new owner can join the USS without the permission of the owners Gayle cannot sell the sims to anyone that the USS would not approve. In the past USS owners that have abandoned their sims have either sold or given then to other USS owners. Oddly enough Gayle has been silent. Gayle has not approached any other USS owners about this, with the possible exception of the current owner of the other SLNE sims, Sundane Erato. Sundane is not in a position to help and Gayle has not contacted any other owners. I have tried to reach Gayle with no success.

Regarding the economic environment that all USS owners as well as all SL real estate brokers everywhere face: When LL changed the policy disallowing grandfathered tier to be passed along they, in effect, price every real estate broker out of the market and stopped land development in it’s tracks. We can no longer afford to buy sims because we are forced to pay current rates for tier rather than the grandfathered rates the sim might currently enjoy.

One wonders why a company would, in effect, raise prices in the face of the world wide economic woes every single SL resident finds themselves in RL. It is little surprise that Gayle cannot continue. She has to charge so much to make ends meet that she cannot compete with other brokers selling land that can be 100% rented. In the USS one of the rules is that at least 12% of the rental prim capacity must be held in reserve so that the “sailing first” policy keeps ALL USS sims free and open for sailing.

If Gayle’s sims are actually allowed to be abandoned then all of the SLNE sims will be isolated form the USS, the Blake Sea, and the mainland. We obviously are VERY concerned about this situation and will be meeting our LL contacts whom we deal with regarding the Blake Sea Community Partnership.

Oh I see, all of USS won't be separated from the Mainland, just the SLNE group. The quote is total poppycock though. An estate owner can sell their sims to whomever they please whenever they please. Has LL honestly said that they'll limit the sale of am estate sim because the owner belongs to a specific group?

Gayle can sell the sims to whomever she pleases. However, the transfer of ownership does NOT mean automatic membership in the USS. If the new owner was not approved, then LL would move the sims elsewhere. As I understand it, this is similar to LL's policy in a non-USS context. Let's say that Owner A allows a sim owned by B to connect. Owner B subsequently SELLS their sim to Owner C. If A doesn't want the connection with the new owner, the sim now owned by C would be moved away.

As to what has to be agreed upon, is not onerous for any new purchaser, given the nature of USS-SL. However, I do find it disturbing that Mr. White contends that Gayle never contacted him, nor will she respond to his inquiries. For surely, the existing members of USS-SL would be the first point of contact for unloading USS-SL sims. And besides, some of these estates do very well (as I mentioned previously, I have been monitoring this area of SL for a year now), and having owned estate sims in the past, I have a pretty good idea when a sim collection is doing well or not.

There is a a deep sadness that has fallen on SLVillage. I am so very sorry to see it come to this point. Our natural tendency is to finger point, but in this case, as in most cases, it won't really do any good in salvaging what I feel is an SL institution.
