They're working now, at least for me. Perhaps you were having a DNS hiccup.

The file server my sites are hosted on was feeling a little poorly (something to do with a bad battery) - it has been perked up whilst I slept by the good doctors at my host provider and is now all very bright breezy and chipper

Slower week in Nascera , Linden Home ownership increased by 282 homes, up 1.1% on last week to a new total of 26811 . Now 91% of all available homes are occupied.

Total uptake by theme:
  • A Frame 4628 (17% of uptake)
  • Asian 5303 (20%)
  • Fantasy 3453 (13%)
  • Modern 13427 (50%)

Another week with next to no Modern themed homes being available , though this week demand was evenly split between the other 3 styles. This weeks growth by theme :
  • A Frame 2%
  • Asian 2%
  • Fantasy 2%
  • Modern 0%

The A-Frame theme has now reached 90% occupation, though with this weeks slowdown in demand , at current uptake rates there is sufficient stock of this theme for nearly 5 weeks.

Occupation rates by theme :
  • A Frame 90%
  • Asian 85%
  • Fantasy 77%
  • Modern 100%

did you see you got a mention on the Business week site? You're famous although the article is messy and the editor should be slapped for allowing such sloppiness but you can't have everything..

Linden Lab’s Virtual Second Life Eyes Second Life (Update1) - BusinessWeek
Yes I saw - I've also emailed the writer with a correction - 1.38million is the past 60 days figure not the daily login one (which is somewhere between 65k and 500k ... )*

ETA: * looking at the 7, 14, 30 and 60 day figures and their relationships to each other, a good guesstimate of unique daily logins is 300k

June 2010 Private Estate Survey

This months Private Estate survey to estimate Full/Homestead/Openspace penetration has just been completed. The Sample was 5000.

The main results are as follows
  • Full Regions : 2541
  • Homestead Regions: 1718
  • Openspace: 29
  • Closed to Public :712

Of the 4288 accessible regions , 59.2% are Full Regions, 40.1% are Homesteads and 0.7% are Openspaces. The Margins of Error are +/-1.34% , +/- 1.34% and +/-0.22% respectively for the three figures figure at the 95% confidence level.

This is a small increase in the number of Full regions at the expense of Homesteads, though the change from last month is non significant. During this period Private estates had a net growth of 506 Regions to a total of 25355. The vast majority of this growth occurred in the first week of June. The proportion closed to public access has slightly increased from 14.0% to 14.2%.

1 of the Full Regions and 3 Homestead were Linden Developed Regions (i.e. sold new with content). Again as last month this is too small penetration to reliably track .

460 of the 1718 (26.8%) Homestead regions were at the new non-grandfathered rate, this is a rise of 2.4% from last month (23.4% ).

Taking these figures a good estimate of private estate tier due each month is US$5,322,000 +/- US$64,000 . (this figure is calculated using known grandfathering rates but excludes any academic reductions and is rounded to the closest US$1000), this figure is marginally up on last month's estimate of US$5,185,000 , a rise of 2.6%.

The top 20 landowners currently control 26.6% (+/- 1.2%) of private estate regions, marginally up by 1.3% from last month , using list prices their holdings represent 20.8% of total private estate tier.

The figures for the top 10 landowners are 21.4% (+/- 1.12%) of regions and 16.0% of tier (the larger estates tend to have a bigger proportion of homesteads than smaller estates).

The Top 10 Estates by number of regions held are as follows:

  • Dreamland ACS 6.0%
  • RGF Estates Inc 5.0%
  • Fantasy World Estates 1.8%
  • Dreamseeker Estates 1.5%
  • Ohana Land 1.1%
  • FantasyLand 1.0% tied for 6th place with ...
  • Azure Islands 1.0%
  • Bell Joubert 1.0%
  • Kendallwood Virtual Estates 1.0%
  • Kristaki Hudson 0.9%
With over 300 regions (c.180 added in June) Jewels Juniper should also be a new entrant to this list up around 5th place. However since my survey bot, Virtual Littlething, is banned from her estate it doesn't register in my surveys. No other significant estate blanket bans Virtual . Other significant changes this week were amongst the top 3 estates which all increased their share

The Margins of error for these Estate shares range from +/-0.65% for the largest down to +/- 0.26% for the smallest.

The regions were running on the following distribution of server classes:
  • Class 5 46.3%
  • Class 501 39.5%
  • Class 502 7.5%
  • Class 7 1.9%
  • Class 702 4.9%

There seem to be no real changes in Server Class hosting since last month with 6.8% being hosted on the newer Class 7/702 servers

Survey Details: This survey was based on a random sample of 5000 private estate regions drawn from all 25355 private estates on the grid on 24th June 2010. The actual surveying took place on 25th June 2010.A further 52 regions were randomly selected to top up the sample, replacing those regions which were unavailable (other than closed to public access) at the time of surveying.

Estate Owners prerogative , I'd had no direct contact with Jewels Juniper before I found Virtual was banned (just after the arrival of the new regions 3 weeks ago), I've since sent an IM pointing out that it will probably mean that her Estate won't register in the Top 10 list but haven't heard anything back .

It's a shame and adds a little bias to my surveys and Ms Juniper loses a little free marketing exposure but she's entitled to do it and it's out of my hands .

ETA: It also means that we can't identify any shared IPs for regions in that estate .

I understand it, but it's kind of a dumb thing to do since the data that the bot collects is minimal and non-invasive, and useful for determining the overall health of the grid that she's invested so much money into. But since she likely wants to conceal whatever breaks she may be getting from Linden Lab, I'm not surprised in the least. I mean, really, what is the point? If she trusts that Tyche will not run an alt bot to scrape the same info anyway, she should trust the info that is here which shows that nothing invasive has been collected.

These sims are a complete mystery to me and others ... it is not only your bot who is banned from these regions, most of them have been completely closed for all who tried to enter ...

Nobody knows whats going on there, who is behind Jenifer Juniper and what she has in mind with 300 or more new sims in the slowest time of the year ...

A survey bot becomes a "spy" bot to those who have something to hide.

Nascera Weekly Census

It's Friday so it's Nascera time ... Well it would have been Friday if the Nascera regions weren't behaving badly since being upgraded to Server 1.40.2 . The Nascera Census of 829 regions normally takes about 3 or 4 hours to run and normally I can do this with only one or two restarts during the surveying when a teleport transfer fails. This weeks Census was started yesterday morning and has only just finished with Teleports failing about every 20 attempts - Same story on different machines and different internet connections - Its definitely a Server issue with my client reporting much higher levels of lost Caps URIs.

Anyway enough moaning - here are the results , another slow week with 295 new Linden Home tenants bringing the total to 27106 , a 1.1% growth on last week and bringing total occupancy to 92% of available stock.

Current occupation by theme is :
  • A Frame 4702 (17% of uptake)
  • Asian 5431 (20%)
  • Fantasy 3546 (13%)
  • Modern 13427 (50%)

The Asian theme was the most popular this week, though the biggest percentage uptake was amongst the fantasy houses. Weekly growth by theme is :
  • A Frame 2%
  • Asian 2%
  • Fantasy 3%
  • Modern 0%

Current occupation rates are:
  • A Frame 92%
  • Asian 87%
  • Fantasy 79%
  • Modern 100%

As I announced a couple of weeks ago this will be the last Weekly Linden Home Census as I won't really have the spare time for the foreseeable future, and certainly not if the Servers are going to be throwing a conniption fit like they currently are. I will probably move to a Monthly reporting cycle for Nascera.

On another note on Monday I found that my Survey Bot has been estate banned from the Dreamland ACS. I've contacted their support but not heard anything back. By coincidence Virtual was also Estate banned on the 2nd largest Estate (Richmond Land Management) but they promptly revoked the ban when I contacted them stating that it was probably done by one of their Tenants and certainly not by the Estate owners .

Virtual Littlething's Estate Banning from Dreamland ACS will have no impact on my Land Surveys nor my reporting of changes in holdings amongst all estates including Dreamland ACS. The only service I provide which will be impacted is detection of which Regions share the same Hosts, This service will carry on for the rest of the publicly open regions on the grid but Dreamland ACS regions will not be surveyed.

I agree, but almost every serious business owner has legitimate reasons to hide their whereabouts, future plans and figures for competition.
So why not in SL as well?

I agree.

What I really want to know is if it is possible for these survey bots to survey other aspects of the land. I would be interested in a survey bot that could detect other bots\campers on the grid.

Tyche, could these survey bots be modified to do this more accurately somehow?

In your Concurrency Survey you mention:

"As I say it's not a definitive measure its just a measure of 4x4m plots where there is always at least one avatar and how many share that space, it may be 16 different avatars over the 10 days or a single bot."

Could the survey bots could be tweaked to allow for a much more accurate bot concurrency reading on the sims that are surveyed? Just curious what that would entail.

I have been trying to get accurate bot readings for some time but have been unable to do so, especially as the bots become more complex, and move around a lot more. I see them jump from sim to sim on a daily basis which makes tracking them difficult. There must be an accurate way to measure them somehow.

It would be possible to design a survey bot which did that , but you''ll have to find someone else to do that. I've made it a policy to limit my surveying to Land details and not look at individual avatars except in terms of summary data .

The vast majority of my surveying doesn't involve physical access to any region including the concurrency survey. In that case I only know what you see on the map that region XYZ has 10 avatars in it and that their last known positions are at x=X and y=Y (it's reported to the closest 4 metres and there is no Z axis details) . As to their identity or what they are ding - I've have no more info than someone looking at the map. Even on the few surveys where I physically visit a region I don't scan any avatar or any prims on the land - just capture the land details such as Server IP address Server Class and Region Type. I personally feel that it's too intrusive to scan users using bots without peoples consent so I draw a line at that.

If you want a bot which is designed to scan individuals I'd recommend you talk to the Modular Systems people - that seems to be something they are very interested in .

ETA: If you are looking at tracking moving bots I also suggest you read up on some of the Biological Sampling Methodologies as well - There are tried and tested sampling techniques to estimate total population levels in cases where your subjects move - My sampling frames are a little easier as the land itself doesn't present that problem.

If you are getting this info from the map it is only reported to the nearest 16m (16x16 grid for each region).

Thank you - you are right it is a 16x16m granularity - Not sure where my 4x4m came from

I made the same mistake. I was recording the X/Y bounds of venues to the nearest 4m and got a couple hundred of them done before I caught this one. D'oh!

It's good to know that it is possible.

I'm surprised we haven't seen anybody release something that could do that yet. All the numbers I have seen for bot\camper detection have always come from Linden Lab and I would like to verify the labs numbers.

Thanks for the info on Modular Systems. I wonder how much they would charge to develop something like that? (land survey bot that monitors other bots\campers)

Just curious, did you purchase your land survey bot(s) from somewhere or did you design them yourself from scratch?

On a related note, I have noticed on your site you have a current residents online tracker:

Total Residents :19,734,382 Logged in past 60 days :1,376,216 Residents online :48,948 Past 24 hours transactions : US$2,094,688

I have been trying to incorporate this Residents Online Tracker into my site as well.

Here's one for example in .asp: http://www.profileslive.com/slonline.asp

However, I don't have the luxury of being able to use an HTML iframe, javascript, .asp code, etc. I'm limited to (very week) HTML because everything else is stripped out due to security concerns.

Do you know if it is possible to have that Resident Online tracker written in simple html (non iframe) that wouldn't be stripped out of major multi-user blog software?

If not, I have a workaround that involves taking snapshots and having those auto-ftp'd but this method is very cumbersome.

Oh, and speaking of something related to that, do you know if it's possible to logon to SL through a web client and be able to monitor sim maps (green dots) without having to run the full SL client?

Great info that your site monitors by the way. I understand about not wanting to add the avatar stats to your surveys though. I wonder if it would cause an uproar if you or someone else were to post that data? I think it would be useful to have. I've always thought that the labs concurrency numbers were over inflated and would like to be able to confirm that suspicion. Hopefully some day.
