My Mood:  SL Join Date: December 1, 2006 | If it's just a bunch of conversions, it's a wash. Unless there is actual abandonment, LL sees no real loss, other than a few dollars per month (the $5 difference between 4 OSs and 1 full island's tier). |

This is not so much a loss as a drop in revenue growth for LL , To be honest there was a slowing in growth in the month or so before the Openspace announcement, but this has been more noticeable in the 3 weeks since then. So as thing stand without knowing their costs ,LL are still making money , its just not increasing at the rate it was 3 or 4 months ago. Generally it looks like either confidence in the Market has been severely dented, or the Region market had reached a saturation point which coincided with the OS announcement - I feel however it's more likely the former.

| Senior Member | There's nothing unreasonable about selling server space via auctions. If you could arrange it properly it would actually be an optimal way to distribute resources and for everyone to pay exactly as much as they want for whatever it is they're buying/renting. Not entirely sure how you would make it work but it would be fun. On a barely related note I've always thought concert tickets should be sold by auction, it would largely eliminate scalpers.

| 828 regions went offline this week, with 200 coming online for a net loss of 628 regions This brings the grid size down to 30315 ( 25222 private estates & 5093 Linden mainland) In the 26 days since the Openspace announcement the Main Grid has shrunk by 1499 regions Most of the activity seems to be consolidation of openspaces into full regions. | Today with a net loss of 110 regions, the Grid dropped below 25,000 private estates for the first time since 21st September Grid Size is 30025 regions, 24931 are private estates the rest Linden owned. With an average loss of around 100 a day we should be under 30,000 regions in total sometime tomorrow, The Grid exceeded 30,000 regions for the first time back on the 19th of September. | Similar losses this week as last week, 262 new regions with 871 removed for a net loss of 609 regions. (94 of these were renames) This brings the grid size to 29732 regions , 24604 private estates and 5128 Linden regions. The change in the number of Linden regions is a bookkeeping issue, there are no new ones this week but I managed to identify 36 Linden regions which I'd misclassified by default as private estate. The newly discovered regions are primarily Linden corporate and special project regions as well as the SLCC training sims. From published LL figures I believe I'm now correctly identifying all Linden owned. Business: Vengeance Studio | The rate of downsizing came up at Jack Linden's meeting today. The numbers tossed about: 3200 fewer OS, 2300 of them converted, 900 abandoned. Jack said those numbers were way off. I mentioned that someone on SLU does a weekly scan and he said scanning won't be accurate. His explanation... "many regions are on the grid or not, and will count or double count in ways that will cause the numbers to be wrong" I don't know what that means. |

| jack is correct in some senses and probaly is unaware of what I do in my surveys , I just record regions coming and going and I'm quite sure my stats are accurate , more so than the various scanning based stats, and are completely in line with published Linden figures. What I don't know or record is whether regions coming or going are Openspaces or Full regions, which is what Jack is probably refering to.. All I will say is I've never missed a region which appears on the map , or once was on the map , actually thats not completely true, if a region came and went within the c24 hour surveying period I use then I'd never see it - I'm reasonably sure that is extremly rare . However a while back I did perform a random sampling of the grid which gave very good estimates of the distribution of Openspaces to Full regions (confirmed a months later when Jack himself said what the current distributions were) - Its a labour intensive process and I wasn't planning on running another survey until January when the new pricing hits, but since the current shrinkage seems reasonably constant (c.20 to 40 new vs 80 to 120 going per day) then maybe a new survey would help give people an idea about what is happening. Hope that's clearer - if not my executive summary is ... Jack doesn't know what I do and doesn't know I'm right |
