The Future Of Second Life

It seems graphics are still improving on Second Life and new tools are still being invented and used to improve the overall look of things. For example Mesh, It seems that people are not only using it for clothes now but also to create buildings.

Compared to other games of today Second Life looks outdated the overall look is just bleh. I was happy to see that finally Firestorm users are able to use 1024 x 1024 terrain textures now. Another right step into the direction of better graphics if you visit an island

Do you guys think Second Life might ever reach a point again where the graphics are just so awesome and Linden Labs could invest money into TV commercials again and other advertising to help Second Life grow again?
At the moment they're doing nothing at all to promote Second Life in the real world

This should be in general, not in the virtual business section. JS. Also, I'm reasonably sure the collective opinion of SLU is that SL has no real future. again, JS.

You register for this forum under the identity "Hoax" and start a thread expecting serious participation?

Should I reply to this one before or after I address a random drive by personal attack in another thread?

How was that an attack? Someone said you would be really silly to think you can make money on SL. So I replied that business might just not be her thing then and should try something else

And thanks!

Do you need it spelled out for you how obnoxious it is to post something like that in your fourth message on the site?

It's not what you said, it's how you said it.

People come on here every day hiding behind some unidentifiable alias and pretend to be experts. No credibility given when none is earned.

Im not pretending to be an expert and I also dont need credibility .. People can make up their own minds and think about what I say and then either trash it or do something with it .. If we all keep saying you can't make money on SL is not going to be any good if you want to keep people on SL. I hate it when I see quiters killing the morale for others and dragging them down with them. Just like in RL it takes some effort to find your thing that works best for you and be profitable for you.

The one thing still missing is being able to get more than 100 people in a sim at the same time. In 2007 MTV attempted to host a virtual JayZ concert. Of course the sim froze and crashed.

If LL could have made that work, SL would be embraced by industry today.

Well to be honest I think you can blame that on MTV as well, they could have done some research and testing and come to the conclusion it's too risky and then maybe do a small unplugged concert for a smaller crowd.

I guess their hardware just wasnt ready for it yet and even today it would be very risky to do a concert for 100 people and just pray the sim doesn't lag out (even after some tweaks).

It would be awesome to see them try again. I have been to some live performances in SL with one of my favorite artist (Gina Stella) .. Sitting at the campfire pit and everyone on wooden logs (maybe only 30 people) surrounding her. A very intimate joy i wont soon forget. If they only recorded something like that with a RL celeb artist im sure would be great

But major networks need millions of advertising dollars to survive. They can't get PepsiCo to sponsor a event that only reaches 30 people of questionable demographics. It's not a feasible investment.

I agree but it wasnt supposed to just stay in SL. They could broadcast it on the MTV Networks and millions of people would see it . They could even rent out virtual ads around the scene for alot of RL cash and serious sponsors could also have their logos displayed at the end credits just like you see at any tv shows/performances. Also renting a sim for a week would be pretty cheap compared to filming on RL location or booking RL Venues .. Im not saying they should switch to this, but it would be a cool addition and add some variety

I passed at least 30 on the way to work last night. I wish pepsi would pay me to put a bumper sticker on my car. I'm not a celebrity, but I could swerve and pass without my signal. That would be memorable .

On that JayZ thing. Would it not be possible of feasable for the concert to be "simulcast" across multiple sims with a max of like 50 avs each? Like some central system makes the "performers avatars" sync across multiple sims but the audience is on 10 or 20 sims?

No. Seriously, no.

It's not 2006, there's no money to be made by new businesses in 2012; not from SL, at any rate.

Linden Labs thanks you for paying playing, though.

You should learn to speak for yourself. There's enough opportunities, just maybe not for you

You never did answer how you made 400 USD profit in the other thread.

You never answered it because, ta-da, you're an anonymous troll. Of the pump and dump variety, it looks like.

Anyways as it was pointed out in the other thread; the money one can make from SL usually ends up being in the realm of $3 USD, and in PRACTiCAL terms no -that's not making money.

Beebo and others have answered the question better than I could, and you're an anonymous, scamming fucktard so I'll bid you a Good Day[1].

[1]Good day for you to eat shit and GTFO, that is.

I think there are still a few SL photographers out there that make good money.

If they diversify and photograph weddings, product shoots, events and magazine work.

Thats nonsense. The SL horse makers make thousands of dollars a year.

That's a totally over-saturated market ATM, everyone and their brother has GIMP and has figured out how to make morphs.

How's that piece of litigation going for them? Up to their 2nd year, aren't they? Getting their profits wiped out in RL legal fees, mostly likely, aren't they?

Again, I originally said new businesses. Yes, the old land barons, the owners of game and RP devices are making a decent profit...but that's old, established businesses.

That's NOT joe n00b fresh from orientation island. joe n00b ain't gonna make shit, except perhaps enough to pay for a premium acct. And to do even that will require RL work hours.

Speaking in practical terms, that's not making a profit --that's operating at a loss.

I agree with you. It's quite rare for a noob with no virtual world experience to turn a profit right away. People have to get acclimated with the platform for a few months before that can happen.
