Mainland Census for March 2012

I've been occupied for the past week running a full Mainland Census and here are the results of the the March 2012 Quarterly Mainland Census.

The Actual Census was run between 9th to 14th March and involved surveybot visits to every Mainland Region and a full scan of all parcels in each region. This includes the 5 Linden Home Continents and the old Teen grid mainland as well as traditional mainland. There were 13 regions which were closed to public access but these were all hand surveyed from bordering regions. For reference the last Census was conducted in December 2011 and was reported here : Mainland Census for December 2011

Overview (This is the TLDR option)

In March 2012 Mainland consists of 6723 regions, (there are about another 500 Linden Owned regions which are not included in the Census - mainly Help Islands, Linden Realms etc). This is exactly the same figure as reported in December 2011. The following chart shows how the number of Mainland regions has changed over the last 6 Census.

Whilst regions are the same number the overall number of parcels is down since last quarter. The Number of Owners marginally increased by 0.2% , mainly driven by Linden Home ownership but land holding groups were a little down in number.
Linden Lab now owns slightly more of Mainland and current abandoned land figures are the highest seen with 7.2 to 8.3% of mainland abandoned.

Overall a slightly better picture than Private Estates over the quarter, with ownership remaining steady , though land is still being abandoned at faster rates than new land is being purchased.

Overview of Parcels

The total number of individual parcels in March 2012 is 159602 down from 162175 last year and these are owned by 69485 unique owners, up 0.2% in 3 months so ownership is still growing but only slowly. The average parcel has a Mean area of 2,759.8 Sqm (Median 512Sqm) and is 52.0% full , this is an increase in size since the last census. 33080 of these parcels are directly owned by Linden Lab (down by 1318 since the last census). The Mean size of the remaining parcels was 1976.2Sqm (Median=512Sqm) and are 58.0% full. 33% of parcels are group owned, 39% for Non-Linden parcels, this is the same figure as last census.

Overview of Owners

Mainland is now owned by 68485 unique owners, 56660 individual accounts and 12825 groups, an increase of 163 individuals and a fall of 14 groups since Dec 2011, The quarterly growth in individual owners is about 0.2% . Each Non-Linden owner has holdings with a mean area of 3598.8Sqm - down by 25sqm (Median is unchanged at 512Sqm) on average held in 1.82 different parcels, a 1% decline from Dec 2011 figure of 1.84.

Total ownership over time has increased but is starting to plateau:

The top 3 owners by area yet again are still Linden Accounts though Governor Linden holdings have increased from 35.6% (Dec 2010) to 36.3% , LDPW have significantly increased their holdings from 4.3% to 5.6% and the top Non-Linden group have also slightly increased their ownerships
  • Governor Linden owns 159,944,848 Sqm (36.3% of total) in 30404 parcels
  • Linden Department of Works holds 25,682,688 Sqm (5.8%) in 2348 parcels
  • Blake Sea group holds 3,167,792 Sqm (0.7%) in 143 parcels
  • Largest Non-Linden group holds 1,299,936 Sqm (0.3%) in 283 parcels
  • Guy Linden (on behalf of Linden Concierge) holds 1,297,056 Sqm (0.3%) in 164 parcels
  • Second Largest Non-Linden group holds 857,376 Sqm (0.2%) in 186 parcels
  • Third Largest Non-Linden group holds 856,816 Sqm (0.2%) in 439 parcels
  • Fourth Largest Non-Linden group holds 728,176 Sqm (0.2%) in 240 parcels

A further 339,520 Sqm is known to be Linden owned and held by the Maintenance group or by Dee Linden on behalf of Concierge

Total significant Linden holdings come to 190,431,904 Sqm 43.2% of the total, up since Dec 2011 by 1,126,112 Sqm and a share increase of 0.2% . Overall Linden Holdings increased by 0.6% by area This represents an increase of 17.2 full regions,
Non Linden holdings come to 250,035,552 Sqm down by 1,257,184 Sqm , representing a 0.5% drop since Dec 2011 - This equates to 19.8 full regions worth

The top 22 Non-Linden owners own 5.0% of all Non-Linden Mainland - a slightly smaller share than last census (5.1%). The Top 6 own 2.0%.

Using same tier assumptions as in previous Census Total Monthly Mainland Tier comes to US$1,000,871 , slightly down on the last census by US$7,125 or 0.7%).
Mean Tier is US$14.41, Median is still US$0 and 47556 landowners (68%) pay no tier above their premium subscription, 509 up on last census. In general its slightly more residents in the quarter but even less are paying tier, the majority (68%) of owners directly owning 512sqm or less.

Known protected land is currently 153,918,256 Sqm (80.8% of all Linden owned), down in size by 0.4% since last census, this includes empty Linden Home plots. Known Abandoned land is now 31,688,672 Sqm (16.6%) up by 6.6% since Dec 2011 ,30.1 Regions worth . Blank and other unknown descriptions comes to 4,824,976 Sqm (2.5%) down 4.3%.

So abandoned land is somewhere between 31,688,672 Sqm and 36,513,648 Sqm or 7.2% to 8.3% of all Mainland - an equivalent of 484 to 557 full regions.

Last December, the range was 6.7% to 7.8%. This a real increase in total abandoned land equivalent to about 27 to 30 full regions since the last quarter ,

Overview of Regions

The current 6723 Mainland Regions have a mean of 13.8 unique owners per region holding land in them (down 0.1 owners) , the Median is still 10 owners. The mean number of parcels per region is 23.7 and 88.1% have at least one Linden owned Parcel.1347 (20.8%) are completely owned by Linden Lab accounts, up by 5 regions since Dec 2011
The busiest region contains 59 different owners, slightly down from the 65 in December 2010. The average region uses 49.1% of it's Prim Allowance.

Overview of Linden Homes

The total number of Linden Home regions remained unchanged at 1158 (17.2% of Mainland) . In total there are currently 42642 Linden Home Plots. Of these 39,910 are occupied,(93.6%) This is 1081 up on last December (a rise of 2.8%)..

Overview of Land for Sale

Currently 26,466,656 Sqm is marked for sale (including Auction). This represents 6.0% of Mainland and is 0.1% down on last Census.Amongst Non-Linden owned land 15,077,168 Sqm is for sale a drop of 16.1% since last census. Linden Owned land for sale rose by 29.2%

This Chart shows how this has risen during the year, Notably the effect of the automatic set for sale on land abandonment has just increased the amount of Linden land for sale. However in this quarter there has been a significant drop in Non-Linden Land for sale and a related rise in Linden owned.

...That's it for now - The next census should be ready sometime in June.If you have any questions or analysis requests let me know.

Most of the afternoon and evening (its 10 to 9 here now), in between potting baby chilli and tomato seedlings, baking bread, booking a short break in Cornwell and doing the laundry . It comes a lot quicker when you use a previous report as the skeleton.

With the amount of abandoned land I've seen lately I would have thought it was a higher percentage than that. In some strange way that gives me hope.

I've been in SL for years and only got my first bit of mainland last fall.

It was ok, I just stayed in my skybox because the ground was a mess, but it was cheap so I was happy while I continued my search for a better piece.

It took a while of looking, because all the parcels I liked were abandoned but not for sale, but then I found a GREAT piece on another sim so I moved. It's a quiet and actually NICE parcel with great neighbours and I have since bought the two adjoining parcels as well.

I have so much fun living along a Linden Road and driving around my neighbourhood seeing who is doing what. Even sliding along on my glowing slug
