I have a confession to make, This year I've really been such a slut

.. in the old fashioned meaning of the word, a woman who is a sloven and untidy . Last year I ran and published 4 quarterly Mainland Census so what did I do this year? I procrastinated , life was too busy to do the hard work. Now I did all the surveying groundwork but I've just never got round to analysing and writing up the results, I've let the data lie around festering in an untidy pile. So now I think I better do something about it and put things right before Social Services come round to clean out all the heaps of data in my room .How can I make amends ? well I thought I'd offer up there results of not one 2011 Mainland Census, not two or three but , yes Four Mainland Census all at one sitting, Five if you include the December 2010 one I'll also be comparing the 2011 ones against. So here we go

During 2011 I ran 4 Mainland Census the first took place between 16th-20th March 2011, the 2nd between 19th & 26th June , the 3rd 18th-23rd September and the 4th between 11th-17th December. Each census involved visits to every Mainland Region including the 5 Linden Home continents and a full scan of all parcels in each region. There were approximately 12-15 regions per census which are closed to public access but these were all hand surveyed from bordering regions.

Overview (This is the TLDR option)

In December 2011 Mainland consists of 6723 regions, (there are about another 500 Linden Owned regions which are not included in the Census - mainly Help Islands, Linden Realms etc). This is an increase of 322 since December 2010 and represents a 5% increase in total mainland. 175 of these new regions were Linden Home Regions, the other 147 include the 63 Teen Grid Mainland regions which transferred to the Main Grid in January 2011. The rest include a group of homestead and openspaces added to create navigable regions around the traditional mainland continents. The following chart shows how the number of Mainland regions has changed over this year.

Whilst regions are up in number the overall number of parcels is marginally down. Number of Owners increased by 6% , mainly driven by Linden Home ownership but land holding groups increased as well .

Linden Lab now owns slightly more of Mainland and whilst there was a dip in abandoned land in September, current figures are the highest seen with 6.7 to 7.8% of mainland abandoned.

Overall a slightly better picture than Private Estates over the year, with ownership increasing , though land is still being abandoned at faster rates than new land is being purchased.

Overview of Parcels

The total number of individual parcels in December 2011 is 162175 down from 162550 last year and these are owned by 69336 unique owners, up 6.4% in 12 months so ownership is still growing. The average parcel has a Mean area of 2,716.8 Sqm (Median 512Sqm) and is 52.4% full , this is a tiny increase in size since the last 2010 census. 34398 of these parcels are directly owned by Linden Lab (down by 3981 since the last 2010 census). The Mean size of the remaining parcels was 1966.7Sqm (Median=512Sqm) and are 58.5% full. 33% of parcels are group owned, 39% for Non-Linden parcels, this is marginally down from 40% for last 2010 census.

Overview of Owners

Mainland is now owned by 68336 unique owners, 56497 individual accounts and 12839 groups, an increase of 3874 individuals and 308 groups since Dec 2010, The annual growth in individual owners is about 7.4% . Each Non-Linden owner has holdings with a mean area of 3624.6Sqm - down by 181sqm (Median is unchanged at 512Sqm) on average held in 1.84 different parcels, a 7% decline from Dec 2010 figure of 1.98.

Total ownership over time has increased:

The top 3 owners by area yet again are still Linden Accounts though Governor Linden holdings have increased from 35.6% (Dec 2010) to 36.3% , LDPW have significantly increased their holdings from 4.3% to 5.6% and the top Non-Linden group have also slightly increased their ownerships

Governor Linden owns 159,806,672Sqm (36.3% of total) in 31704 parcels
Linden Department of Works holds 24,805,392 Sqm (5.6%) in 2327 parcels
Blake Sea group holds 3,167,792Sqm (0.7%) in 143 parcels
Largest Non-Linden group holds 1,301,216Sqm (0.3%) in 335 parcels
Guy Linden (on behalf of Linden Concierge) holds 1,228.656Sqm (0.3%) in 200 parcels
Second Largest Non-Linden group holds 893,872Sqm (0.2%) in 408 parcels
Third Largest Non-Linden group holds 893,584Sqm (0.2%) in 227 parcels
Fourth Largest Non-Linden group holds 878,992Sqm (0.2%) in 661 parcels

A further 297,280Sqm is known to be Linden owned and held by the Maintenance group or by Dee Linden on behalf of Concierge

Total significant Linden holdings come to 189,305,792Sqm 43.0% of the total, up since Dec 2010 by 17,743,168Sqm and a share increase of 1.9% . Overall Linden Holdings increased by 10.3% by area This represents an increase of 270.7 full regions,
Non Linden holdings come to 251,292,736Sqm up by 3,359,424Sqm , representing a 1.4% rise since Dec 2010 - This equates to 51.3 full regions worth

The top 22 Non-Linden owners own 5.1% of all Non-Linden Mainland - a slightly smaller share than last 2010 census (5.2%). The Top 6 still own 2.2%.

Using same tier assumptions as in previous Census Total Monthly Mainland Tier comes to US$1,008,096 , slightly down on the last census by US$9,215 or 0.9%).
Mean Tier is US$14.54, Median is still US$0 and 47074 landowners (67%) pay no tier above their premium subscription, 1189 up on last census. In general its more residents since year but even less are paying tier, the majority (67%) of owners directly owning 512sqm or less.

Known protected land is currently 154,552.480Sqm (81.6% of all Linden owned), up in size but only in % by 0.5% since last 2010 census, this includes empty Linden Home plots. Known Abandoned land is now 29,713,664Sqm (15.7%) up by 4.0% since Dec 2010 ,19.4 Regions worth up 4.5%. Blank and other unknown descriptions comes to 5,039.648Sqm (2.6%) up 26.9%.

So abandoned land is somewhere between 29,713,664Sqm and 34,753,312Sqm or 6.7% to 7.8% of all Mainland - an equivalent of 453 to 530 full regions.

Last December 2010, the range was 6.6% to 7.7% of a 5% smaller area.This is a tiny % share increase but still a real increase total abandoned land, however the rate of climb is much lower than last year which saw nearly 100% increases and earlier in the 2011 the picture was looking a little better than now , The March 2011 figures were a rise on Dec 2010 but there was little change in June 2011 with Septembers 2011 Census showing a small decline below December 2010 levels, however abandonment rose again in the December 2011 Census as you can see below:

Overview of Regions

The current 6723 Mainland Regions have a mean of 13.9 unique owners per region holding land in them (down 0.2 owners) , the Median is still 10 owners. The mean number of parcels per region is 24.1 and 88.4% have at least one Linden owned Parcel.1389 (20.7%) are completely owned by Linden Lab accounts, up by 103 regions from Dec 2010
The busiest region contains 65 different owners, slightly up from the 63 in December 2010. The average region uses 49.7% of it's Prim Allowance.

Land for sale

Just a little update showing how much of Mainland is for sale. Currently 26,793,136Sqm is marked for sale (including Auction). This represents 6.1% of Mainland, amongst Non-Linden owned land 7.2% or 17,974,960Sqm is for sale - It was 6.5% in Dec 2010.

This Chart shows how this has risen during the year, Notably the effect of the automatic set for sale on land abandonment has just increased the amount of Linden land for sale.
