Mainland Census June 2010

I've finally got round to writing up the results of the June Mainland Census. The census was run from the 18th to 22nd June and included all 3 Nascera continents as well as all of more traditional mainland. Unless otherwise specified all comparisons made in this report are against the last Census carried out in April 2010 and reported here Mainland Census April 2010

Overview

At the time of the census Mainland was 6225 regions , an increase of 9 regions since the April 2010 census. Most of the 9 new regions since April were Info Hub regions for the 2nd and 3rd Nascera continent, so effectively there has been very little change in Mainland Size. All but 9 regions were directly accessible . and the 9 closed to public access were surveyed from neighbouring regions.

Generally there has been an increase in total number of owners, who tend to own smaller plots, principally Linden Home owners, A large majority of mainland land owners (61%) pay no additional tier over their Premium subscriptions (though that may be hidden by group donations). Abandoned land increased significantly since the last census. Whilst significantly more owners have been added, overall Tier is marginally down from April (-1%).

Overview of Parcels

The total number of individual parcels fell slightly to 166231 (down 1%) owned by 61258 unique owners, up 8.3% in 2 months (the prevous tow month growth was 11.2%) .The average parcel has a Mean area of 2,473.4 Sqm (Median 512Sqm) and is 53.4% full , this is small increase in size since last census. 31812 of these parcels are directly owned by Linden Lab (down by 424 since last census). The Mean size of the remaining parcels was 1933.3Sqm (Median=512Sqm) and are 60.6% full. 36% of parcels are group owned, 43% for Non-Linden parcels, this is marginally down from 45% for last census.

Overview of Owners

Mainland is now owned by 61258 unique owners, 48491 individual accounts and 12767 groups, an increase of 4744 individuals and a decline of 39 groups since April, The growth in individuals is about 30% of what it was last census. Each Non-Linden owner has holdings with a mean area of 4201.8Sqm - down by 337sqm (Median is unchanged at 512Sqm) on average held in 2.17 different parcels, and 8.7% decline from Aprils 2.38.

The top 3 owners by area are still Linden Accounts though Governor Linden holdings have declined from 33.8% to 32.7% whilst LDPW and the top Non-Linden groups slightly increased their ownerships
  • Governor Linden owns 133,403,104Sqm (32.7% of total) in 29774 parcels
  • Linden Department of Works holds 12,859,488Sqm (3.2%) in 1753 parcels
  • Blake Sea group holds 3,023,920Sqm (0.7%) in 134 parcels
  • Largest Non-Linden group holds 1,240,544Sqm (0.3%) in 337 parcels
  • Guy Linden (on behalf of Linden Concierge) holds 1,207,552Sqm (0.3%) in 145 parcels
  • Second Largest Non-Linden group holds 1,144,544Sqm (0.3%) in 716 parcels
  • Third Largest Non-Linden group holds 848,672Sqm (0.2%) in 188 parcels

A further 94,320Sqm is Linden owned and held by the Maintenance group.

Total significant Linden holdings come to 150,588,384Sqm 36.9% of the total, down by 108,128Sqm and a share drop of 0.1% . This very small drop was taken up by non-linden owners.

The top 22 Non-Linden owners own 4.61% of all Non-Linden Mainland - a slightly smaller share than last census (4.73%). The Top 6 still own 2.2%.

Using same tier assumptions as in previous Census Total Monthly Mainland Tier comes to US$1,068,398 marginally down on last census (by US$10,279).
Mean Tier is US$17.44, Median is US$0 and 37438 landowners pay no tier above their premium subscription, 5094 up on last census. In general its a lot more residents since last time though the increase is less than the previous census, but next to no new tier, the majority of owners directly owning 512sqm or less.

Known protected land is 129,520,992 qm (86.0% of all Linden owned), down 1.7% since last census, this includes empty Linden Home plots. Known Abandoned land is now 17,110,080Sqm (11.4%) significantly up by 18.3% (40.4 Regions worth) . Blank and other unknown descriptions comes to 3,957,312Sqm (2.6%) down 10.3%.

So abandoned land is somewhere between 17,110,080Sqm and 21,067,392Sqm or 4.2% to 5.2% of all Mainland (Last census the range was 3.6% to 4.6% of a similar size area). So generally abandoned land has increased by a large amount in the past 2 months.

Overview of Regions

The 6225 Regions have a mean of 14.0 unique owners per region holding land in them (up 0.3 owners) , the Median is still 10 owners. The mean number of parcels per region is 26.5 and 87.1% have at least one Linden owned Parcel.1253 (20.1%) are completely owned by Linden Lab accounts, down by 66 regions from April.
The busiest regions contains 78 different owners, slightly less busy than the 85 in April.

The next census is due to be run in two months time (Around 18th August).

Given the increasing abandonment of mainland, would it make sense for LL to buy out enough parcels to reduce the size of each continent to reduce the server overhead?

Or is it really so patchwork as to make it an impossible task to consolidate inhabited parcels?

It very much a patchwork - 43% of the confirmed abandoned parcels (i.e. the 4.2% baseline) are Microparcels of 32sqm or less . Of the 261 or so regions worth of abandoned parcels only 10 are close to a full region (though of course there may be more abandoned land within any one region)

Code:

did I really read that almost 37% of mainland is LL? I thought it was sub 20% including abandoned. That's a staggering amount.

frustrating because they don't seem to be doing anything about recirculating abandoned land back out to actual buyers very often. I've seen some prime abandoned parcels sit for more than a year and a half.

It's slightly declined from a peak in April of 37.0% - It's always been above 30% since I've been measuring it. I did report that LL only directly hold 21% of Zindra but it's much higher on the rest of mainland and Nascera.

one last question since I can't see the wood for the trees at the moment..

is abandoned land included in that 36.9% or is it in addition to?

and, because I can...

I can't wait to see the Q2 report.. are you going to do a real one before they release their fantasy one?

Abandoned land is included in the 36.9%

I'm unsure about the Q2 report this time - The Data is now there, it was available on Second Life Economic Metrics Repository from yesterday and can be downloaded - But I'm starting a new job tomorrow and not sure if I'll have any time to write a Q2 report in the next 2 weeks or so . But if there are any volunteers please help yourself to the data .

I feel like I'm going back to big school ... It's a large multinational who enticed me in with a portfolio of tricky and interesting analytical problems and promises of access to lashings of data .

Linden Homes... obviously we can't subtract its effect from the real data (as we can't 'redo' the last six months without Linden Homes) but it clearly wasn't enough to put mainland demand back into positive territory.

And in fact might have been responsible for pulling demand *away* from the mainland. All those project hours... for a net result of lost revenue, perhaps?

I don't hold out a lot of hope for a turnaround later, either. Most active residents are only active for about 11 months... some of us are grid active for years but the vast majority isn't. The Linden Homes experiment is now about half the active lifetime of new residents. If it hasn't worked by now... it's not gonna.
