I agree with the OP and find it very difficult to shop especially when you consider the shear regal beauty of my avatar. Hours have gone into this face. This custom body was at first the stock furry avatar thus accounting for the stealth cat like presences of DaQbet.
Oooh how cruel this second life, as I’m forced to look past these hideous models for something as simple as a pair of chaps or toga. Damn you Gene Jacobs!! Why oh why did you retire!

And you are fine. AFAIC Cartoony and Anime looks need the big eyes. I was bemoaning the oversized eyes on avs with realistic skins aimed at appearing more realistic. There is a very visible difference between someone who went for the anime look and someone who's trying to look at least subjectively realistic ... and failing.

From my post (#6)

Over-sized irises. The default SL iris is HUGE. This iris is ok, in fact perfect, if they're after an anime or cartoony look. The moment they start slapping on realistic skins they better get irises to match.

Personally, I feel like DoC Eldritch shouldn't be modeling his own clothes, his shape just does not look right and it makes his clothes less appealing to me

Aye, and your original critique as i read it boils down to: people choose to demo their stuff on models which don't meet the proportions of regular RL human being. And/or ones you personally find ugly, sometimes to the point they cause you cringe and how it can distract from the product itself. Which you extrapolate into possibly such choices might turn off the customers with naturally shaped AVs, who either cannot tell from the picture how the product in question would look on them, or could simply presume the designer perhaps has --also-- no clue when it comes to design of actual items they sell (even though said items sit right in front of you on these posters... and can be judged on their own merit)

My counter-point to that was, naturally shaped AV seems to be minority in SL. So it may actually make more business sense to model things on shapes which are closer to the average customer. Case in point: the mentioned earlier t-shirts modeled on person with boob sliders in the 90's. Is it silly, given the clothing will stretch in all weird ways on AV like that? Maybe... until you recall most of people do crank up their breast size slider for whatever reasons. So if you model your clothing on someone who is flat and doesn't distort the lettering.... it will be a string of these average customers leaving you the IMs how the text totally doesn't look on them like it looks on the model, and what sham of a business with 'shopped product posters you're trying to run.

It's a hard call to make--judge a product by the model showcasing it, or ignore the model, and simply scrutinize the product...

I feel design and marketing are a huge influence (whether subconscience or not) in the decision making process--if this were not the case, companies would not spend millions on advertising and marketing. A good model to showcase your work--whether shallow or not--helps sell the product.

It's unfortunate that many businesses are oblivious to the importance of a solid ad.

Nevertheless, a savvy shopper can look past bad design or marketing...but it sure doesn't help.

No, your counter-point was that we were sniggering at atypical AVs and that we should look deep into our souls and repent of our clique-driven attitudes.

Your most recent post is a solid rebuttal based on sound arguments. I don't agree with it, and it has not changed my opionion that some designers make some really bad choices because they are incompetent at marketing, but at least you are actually arguing in good faith this go round.

If its clothes and the avatar is kinda scary it doesnt throw me off so much -- i think its because you can visualize the outfit without the person in it , but on skins ..its really hard to separate and imagine it looking well on you when the avatar on the ad is making it look bad.

An example: one time a friend popped in wearing a skin and it was so gorgeous and when she told me where it was from I was really suprised. It was a place I had seen ads for , for a long time but the models shape was... "different" and didnt flatter the skin the way my friends shape did so I had no idea it could look so nice. I wasnt able to see the potential for it on me based on the shape it was displayed on in the ads.

I know that even when the model for the skin is perfect it might not look so great on your shape until you adjust yourself a bit to match up with it.. but when the ad features a model really distorting its possibilities it can be a turn off.

I love a unique look. It can be 'ugly', too. But yes, I also cringe when I see that unintentionally disproportioned model on a sales ad. More often than not, it will result in me not daring to buy anything from the designer..

OMG!! WHAHAH my first post and you folks have me rolling!! You know how many skins I have in inventory?? oohh and that's just on THIS avi!! I'm an SL photograher and it amazes me the amount of 'people' who come into my studio. Wanting vanity pics of a REALLY bad skin. It's so hard to get a nice pose/portrait of a skin that looks like it fell off the back of 'jeb's cheap skins found in the trunk of my car". I would love to create skins but emmm that takes talent.
