It's not even the chaos as such. Its the Great Wall, the dozens (hundreds?) of pure water sims, the train tracks with running trains that go for dozens of sims, the volcanoes, the bridges, the juice bar (?), of course the insanely awesome Bay City and Nautilus, the hundreds of sims worth of roads that cross mountains and rivers and valleys and waterfalls. You just don't get this sort of stuff on private estates not least because they generally don't have the size to support such extensive infrastructure.

I bought a piece of land in Paikea the other day that has a sharp peak that falls quickly to a road in a valley that runs along a river. Way more interesting than thousands of pancake flat sand bars.

Having estate tools does not mean any extra cost. The lindens have exactly the same functionality for mainland and more. What you mean is they charge $100 extra for this service. I accept that and understood it fully when i purchased a sim.

More bandwidth eh? What is this based on? The reason maybe mainland runs badly at times is you cant control the sim next to you whilst on a private sim you can (eg no one can connect directly next to you or come into view). A lot of private sims run better because they can do proper maintenance of what textures are loaded etc etc. However vice versa is also true depending what sims you take for examples. I am not against mainland although I would go there if they didn't charge so much and I could terraform properly.

Grandfathered sims do NOT apply to mainland. They apply to old class 4 private sims. All mainland is class 5. They are not run on better hardware, they are run on exactly the same.

Try asking a Linden that you want to purchase a mainland sim and you are worried it doesn't run on the same great hardware private sims do or not enough bandwidth. You might be surprised as to the answer you get compared to the other way round.

I know it looks like I'm beginning to stalk you but I'm not (well not until i see your avi and then i might rawr). I like the way you have put things so far and its a nice discussion.

Its just I don't trust their logic behind this.

And a great percentage of those you can do fuck all on.

Vote for my JIRA:

LL needs to allow scripting on *ALL* Linden water parcels.

But I'm not hopeful as evidenced by this typical Linden assbite response:

Te May commented on MISC-283:
-----------------------------

I found a block of 6 water regions with 5 of then No-Script.

Lineata
Albipectus
Metanastria
Severa
Lajonquierea
Austroplacida

Of this block only Lineata has scripting enabled.

I put in a ticket asking them why and if they would enable it.

I had the curt reply:

"My apologies however I do not have an answer to your question, however we are going to leave settings as they are."

I reopened the ticket asking for reconsideration but it was closed again with no explanation <sigh>
Not to mention 225 votes and not assigned or even commented on by LL.

Fuck You and the JIRA you rode in on, Linden Lab

Voted. I understand the original desire to turn off scripts to prevent griefing, but no-script does jack-shit in that regard (since all one has to do is have a script take controls and it will continue to work in a no-script area). Building and/or autoreturn is a much better method for preventing griefing. It would make more sense to allow build on the parcels near land, with a quick autoreturn (after all, once you sit in the boat, it won't be autoreturned), and then make the parcels farther out no-build, if necessary, but keep everything script-enabled.

However, clearly the best option is for LL to allow users to create and maintain their own sailing sims, since time and again we have seen that private content is better than Linden-created content. To that extent, working with LL to find ways to make truly low-use sims for sailing at the current tier rate, that *cannot* be used for anything but their intended low-use needs, whether by clamping frame time or packets or alloted RAM or bandwidth, would be a good potential model.

I wonder... how many sailors on a openspace SIM does it take before it's abusing it...

Somebody earlier basically asked why four OS sims would use more then one normal SIM... I too wonder this, but to be somewhat fair to Jack Linden, he did say that it's at least in part to the database activity that's involved... Think of 16 virtual worlds per server accessing database info, vs 4 such worlds accessing database info... to some degree I can understand this aspect of the problem.

Still I don't understand how raising the fee by 66% is a good idea. It seems to me, they (LL) really want the vast majority of these OS sims to be abandoned. I say this, simply because they must know that most of the current owners are not going to be willing to pay 66% more then you'd pay on a normal SIM for the privelage of having more virtual space without better performance or ability to run more scripts, etc...

Funnything is... when I recently was in the market for some residential space for myself... I thought OS SIMs were already over priced, given the poor performance I'd observed on the handfull of OS SIM's I'd been on. Fortunately this kept me from buying one or part of one... I wound up with normal space private land and am now very glad I did...

Still a big part of me wonders... when is the new increase in teir fees for normal SIMS comming...
