A wonderful actress and a great lady. She will be missed.

Oh I just loved her. I grew up with her in my living room. Safe paths Jean.

When I was watching "All in the Family" first run, I didn't realize the depth and breadth of what the show was offering. It seemed a standard comedy. Sure, some extreme moments would happen, something that made the audience gasp or laugh uncomfortably, and I could "get" the point. But only after many years of watching reruns have I come to appreciate what the show really offered - a deep an honest look at American life of the time.

And as was said in the linked article, Stapleton's Edith was the "conscience" of the show - the simple, childlike but ultimately deep understanding of right and wrong. Lear and the other producers/directors, etc. understood this and let the character flower over the life of the show.

She is and was a gem, on screen and off.
