I watched the new version of IT last night and, while there were changes I didn't really love, I thought they did a pretty good job of capturing the 'feel' of the book. That is, right up until the last half an hour or so, which I spent going "The fuck were they thinking?"

Hm! I was just nosing around the App Store just now, and noticed Letterman's got a new show on Netflix, where he apparently goes with a very simple, old school "casual interview" format, as chat shows once were. Each episode will feature just one guest, and the season opens with Barack Obama.

Barack Obama will be the first guest on David Letterman's new Netflix show - Jan. 5, 2018

Wonder Woman 2 Will Be The First Film To Implement The PGA's Anti-Sexual Harassment Guidelines
Quote:
On Friday, the Producer’s Guild of America released a set of guidelines to prevent and deal with sexual harassment on film sets. Yesterday, it was announced that the first film to implement those guidelines will be Wonder Woman 2.

This announcement came at the Producer’s Guild of America Awards on Saturday, as reported by Vanity Fair. This announcement comes after November’s news that that the Wonder Woman production had parted ways with producer and financier Brett Ratner, who was accused of sexual harassment by a number of women, including Ellen Page (who worked with him on X-Men: Last Stand) in a bracing account.

It’s a move in keeping with the ideals of Wonder Woman, a powerful, liberated woman who protects the innocent and has served as an inspiration for women for decades.
Rather appropriate.

Does that mean the film credits will read:

"No women were harmed in the making of this film"?

Well, the end credits for Guardians of the Galaxy say "No raccoons or tree creatures were harmed in the making of this film", and Harrison Ford was almost crushed by the scenery in The Force Awakens, so it seemed like a reasonable question.

'Shape of Water' Hit With Plagiarism Allegations Following 13 Oscar Nominations
Quote:
Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-nominated film, The Shape of Water, has been hit with accusations of plagiarism by the estate of an American author and playwright.

David Zindel, the son of Pulitzer prize winner Paul Zindel, recently told The Guardian in a statement that he believes del Toro's magical tale of a female janitor who falls in love with a captive water creature is clearly inspired by his father's own 1969 play, Let Me Hear You Whisper, also about a female janitor who falls in love with a captive water creature (in this instance, a dolphin).

I think it was also called out as being very similar to a sci-fi novel (as opposed to a play) but I can't recall which one. I'll try to find it.

Also, it was compared to this short film...‘The Shape of Water’ Didn’t Take Ideas From Viral Short, NFA Rules | IndieWire

Quote:
The similarities between “The Shape of Water” and a short film called “The Space Between Us” have raised eyebrows among some viewers, as their shared premise — a woman working at a research facility falls in love with a fish creature — seems too out-there to be a coincidence.

...
I guess us women love us some romantic fish creature stories.

I think we can all agree the basic features of the story are not all that original. But why is it always the human girl and the space alien, or the human girl and the legendary monster, the girl and the hyper-intelligent animal, etc., etc. Have some guts and try to tell a story about a human BOY and some very non-human, sentient thing falling for each other. Tell *that* one, all you storytelling geniuses. The girls are tired of sexing up your weirdos.

You are joking, right? I assume you are. Though, if not, there are a million and one human boys with 'manic pixie dream girls'. Like Tom Hanks with mermaid Daryl Hannah in Splash; or Bruce Willis and non-human Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) in Fifth Element; or Anthony Michael Hall with computer created Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science.

Hehe, I say all that then look at the actual 'manic pixie dream girl' article on Wikipedia and none of the examples I mention are on there. bah. whatever. Apparently manic pixie dream girl means something else, or . . . it's too late at night to examine where I went wrong.

Mind, I recognize the many human women with nonhuman men, like Starman (Jeff Bridges, Karen Allan), Guardians of The Galaxy (Kurt Russell, Laura Haddock), etc. etc.

I don't think "manic pixie dream girl" means that its "dude with non human girl."

Basically, anything with Zooey Deschanel would be MPDG.

Jeez how can you do a list of boys with non human girls and forget Kirk ?

There is no end of boys and alien girls, but my favourite pairing has to be Tech Sargeant Chen and Laliari

(and if you dont recognise those characters then shame on you!)

One: I'm not entirely sure what the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl" trope has to do with Free's point. The "pixie" identifier in the name is related to their "personality" and is not meant to be indicative of them not being human (and this is leaving aside the discussion about how toxic the trope is).

1a: Daryl Hannah in Splash isn't a bad example, BUT in both that and in the source material, the man falls in love with the mermaid while unaware of her true nature.

1b: Leeloo may as well be human, quirky language aside, she's human. As an aside, I find it interesting that she's not listed as an MPDG because she totally is. She has a little more agency than is typical, but her ultimate story purpose is still to help Dallas' arc.

1c: Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science is basically an adaptation of the Pygmalion myth. The whole point is creating the "perfect woman," so she's pretty human too.

Two: I have a hard time considering any of Kirk's "conquests" from TOS series to be anything other than human. They pretty much all conform to human norms in appearance and behaviour, with the largest difference being the occasional usual skin colour. Some of Riker's partners fit more, but even then they mostly have the same primary and secondary sexual characteristics and are thus basically human. Laliari from Galaxy Quest is getting towards (what I'm assuming is) Free's point, but given the film is explicitly a Trek pastiche, I can't really give it credit for the story beat. Also, see my point about mermaids; the tentacle reveal came after the initial attraction.

Offhand, the closest I can think of to a story that fulfils Free's requirements is Equus, but that might not be an example to be emulated too often.

The devoted woman who falls for/sees beyond the outside appearance of the obese and/or ugly and/or quadriplegic man, or in this case, the guy who looks like a fish. The woman is suppose to be able to see beyond the outside and appreciate instead who the person is on the inside. I think that is the Ugly guy/Hot girl trope. The reverse trope is rare.

All I'm saying is, put down the stories which in some way provide a Beauty and the Beast through line, then do the same for those Handsome and the Hobgoblin tales, and I think you'll find the latter won't take up much space on your notepad.
