My Mood: SL Join Date: October 2004 Blog Entries: 1 | If you stick a fat character into a TV show and the bulk of their interaction with other characters revolves around them cramming pastries down their throats and complaining about their weight, sweating a lot, wearing clothing too small for them and having other characters comment on how much fat is flopping out everywhere, lots of wah I can't get a date because I'm so overweight — this is all exploitative of a fat person and not "funny." A lot of people see people getting upset over exploitation and go OH I GUESS WE CAN'T HAVE THESE THINGS IN COMEDY ANYMORE but it's a cop out reaction that refuses to address the part that's actually insulting. In the above example, the point of the joke is that the person is lol fat. Why is that funny? Their weight is exploited for comedic effect and it results in something that's barely more thought out than a fart joke. I don't know why "lol dude in a dress" is supposed to be funny, but I'm not a thirteen year old stoner. The problem with this sitcom is not that "omg I guess we can't have a laugh about cross-dressing!" Actually there's a metric fuckton of problems with this sitcom to be quite honest, but they primarily go back to specific stereotypes being exploited to try and get a cheap laugh. You're not expected to laugh because the characters are doing anything actually funny, you're supposed to laugh at them because of how stupid it is that they have to dress up like a girl ha ha ha. |

It was pretty much degrading to anyone with a brain. Every single character was just a horrible caricature, and it was particularly degrading not to the transgendered specifically but to women with the notion that the only way women can succeed is by using sex. |

| I didn't see the discussion going beyond this show which, let's face it, is no Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
