Someone I work with has the same opinion, they didn't like it at all for reasons I can completely understand.

At least you gave it a try

Too much deus ex machina exceeds my capacity for suspending disbelief. Warning: plot complication, out pops the BatCycle. Warning, another complication: quick to the BatBananaphone! Attention: looming death in six seconds: I'll just use the the BatWMD!

I thought Ledger's character was compelling and kinda novel.

i agree that the film isnt anywhere near as great as ppl are carrying on.. i mean, it wasnt even based in gotham, and batman had cotton buds in his mouth the entire time.
the joker did all the heavy lifting here, salvaging what i believe to be yet another standard batman flick.

We just got back.

It was good, as far as a Batman film goes, but I don't really understand the orgasming right now either.

And it fell into the same trap of "Well we've about wrapped this movie up, OH WAIT ACCOUNTING JUST SAID WE STILL HAVE A COUPLE MILLION LEFT IN THE BUDGET SO LET'S ADD ANOTHER FORTY MINUTES OF SPECIAL EFFECTS FUCK YEAH!"

I had to pee so bad and three times I was sure I was about to be let out. Two and a half hours? Jesus fuck.

Anyway it was good. I pretty much figured out the Two Face tie in the moment he pulled out the coin though. Heath Ledger was weird, but I think a lot of the ZOMG BEST MOVIE EVAR was because he's dead.

I thought about that, but I don't agree - I think he would at least have been nominated for an Academy Award even if he hadn't died. But his death is probably going to shoo him in to a win or at least a special award.

I saw some of "Batman Returns" on cable last night, with Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito. It was interesting to watch, because that movie was far, far more cartoonish than Dark Knight. And, yes, Keaton altered his voice when he had on the bat costume. Not quite as much as Bale, but it was still noticable.

DeVito was brilliant as the Penguin, and yet his character was so unrealistic and unbelievable it wasn't anywhere near Ledger's performance as Joker.

It's important to bear in mind that Batman was born during a campy, overstated era of superheroes. We're more sophisticated (read: Jaded) today. So much so, that in the last Superman movie they felt compelled to change the iconic Superman motto "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" to "Truth, Justice and all that other stuff". To hell with the era in which Superman was born, when "the American Way" wasn't a cuss word. We wouldn't want to offend any of our culturally diverse audience today, especially when the movie goes global.

If you read the comics or anything you'd have figured out the Two-Face tie in the instant they said his name

Batman is really the only reason to pay attention to DC at all. Everyone else in that universe is pretty boring.

The fucking Riddler? God yes because it worked so well the last time.

I wonder how the Riddler feels about the fact that even the guy with the evil ventriloquist dummy kicks more ass than him. It must suck.

Wonder if the bookies would take the bet "Heath ledger for an oscar"..

I haven't seen this yet, but I'll say this, the last Batman film was fucking Trash... the script was up there with Phantom Menace, Clone wars and Revenge of the sith.. yet everyone was shiting on about how dark it was, and how awesome.. I felt like a leper coming out of the Cinema so unhappy with it... so I wont buy into the hype this time.

I will go and see it though.

Actually I heard they were considering either Anthony Michael Hall or David Tennant for The Riddler. And considering Nolan's universe, it wouldn't be a shitty Joker clone like how they made Jim Carrey play it.

Also Richie, I don't mind people not liking Begins, but I take issue with you equating it with those terrible scripts. We shall settle this with pistols at 30 paces, good sir.

Richie..

I went in , wholly expecting to be let down after all the hype, and I was blown away.

For me, the quintisential batman stories were The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, and Arknam Assylum.

This movie captured that mood perfectly.

It's not so much that he's a shitty joker clone, he is basically a guy with a personality disorder who feels smug about knowing shit. If that were enough to get you qualified as a supervillain half of SLU would be running around in latex suits and planning elaborate capers involving flightless birds and/or wacky-yet-deadly novelty gadgets.

If Riddler posted to SLU his last line in every post would be "Okay this is the last I have to say on this topic, I'm leaving this thread NOW", 5 minutes before posting again except he'd probably also be running shanti-is-coming.com

Actually not, he was mentioned and shown in the first "Batman" movie, but at that time he was being played by Billy Dee Williams. That was one thing that ruined "Batman Forever" for me.

The next one could be the return of Ra's al Ghul, but only if they are wanting to follow how the comic book character was done.

Ra's al Ghul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The one thing that Marvel had over DC for so long, and probably still do, is that the characters had real problems that everyday people face.

Well, I saw this yesterday, and aside from Heath's performance, and Two-face, I didn't like it much at all. I'd like to have seen the Two-Face story made into a seperate movie all its own, I think that part of the story deserved more attention. It seemed to me like they'd got the storyboard for 3 seperate movies and crammed them into 1 by taking out all the bits that would have made it all make sense. Too many gadgets (I kept hearing Jack Nicholson's Joker in my head, saying "where'd he get those wonderful toys?) And I just do not like Christian Bale as Batman, I don't think he's got enough acting talent to pull it off. Next to Heath, who had so much talent, made Bale look even worse.

But Heath's Joker was brilliant. And Cillian Murphy is such sweet eye-candy.
