Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

It is time to buy a new DVD player but I do not know what to get. Do I get an HD-DVD because I own an HDTV or does Blu-Ray work on HDTVs?

Which is the better format?

Is this going to be like a BETA versus VHS thing where the better format loses?

Blu Ray is a slowly dying breed.

Blue Ray is up on top--because of the porn industry (one of the main deciding factors of what wins--{see} VHS & Beta)

At this point in time, you can buy a PS3 for the price of a Bluray or Hdvd player--buy the PS3 and get a whippin game system in the package.

My mother (Santa Claus this year) has already bought my son an XboX 360 for Christmas so a 2nd game system would be sensory overload for my 8 year old.

Yes. This does not apply to those who have a next-gen console already, or the rich.

I should have clarified I suppose.

You can buy an HD drive for the X-Box 360 for $200--cheapest way to upgrade to HD-DVD.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will work with your high-def (HD) TV. Many people think that only HD-DVD will work with HDTV--it's just a marketing gimmick from the Toshiba camp.

As far as the battle between the competing formats, both sides regularly issue press release proving that they are winning but, in fact, it's still a relative stalemate. And the U.S. porn industry* has sided with HD-DVD, not Blu-Ray (Blu-Ray has some very strong Disney ties, you see).

*The Japanese pornsters chose Blu-Ray.

I largely think this is the stupidest thing ever, but I was a fetus during beta/VHS so this is my first "format war" I'm exposed to.

The blu-ray devices typically retail for far more than HD-DVD does. The cheapest blu-ray player is the Playstation 3, which accounts for almost all of blu-ray's market share. Otherwise you're looking at over 500.00 a pop for a player.

HD-DVD on the other hand has players retailing regularly under 200, there are even some around 99.99 at Wal/K-mart. Also HD-DVD has been supporting features of the HD profile for a long time now that blu-ray is only beginning to implement.

Largely I don't care, I don't even have a HDtv and just want this stupidity to end. Personally if I did have to buy one, HD-DVD looks better to me.

Also I hate Sony.

I'm still waiting for the formats to level out a bit.
I won't buy a PS3 because there are still nowhere near enough games for it, to justify buying it - all the best games are also on the Xbox 360 and either run better on the Xbox or have more features (like Gears of War and VF5).

I'm tempted to get the upgrade for the Xbox HD-DVD but will waiti a bit longer.

Actually the HD-DVD for the Xbox 360 is $179.99, but I think Amazon.com sells it cheaper. Plus you get 5 free movies by mail.

They do now have DVD players that play both Bluray and HD-DVD, but it ain't cheap.

Actually, the XBOX one is now only $129 - definitely the best way to go. However, I would say honestly to just get a decent progressive scan DVD player that does upscaling, which most do and stick with normal DVDs until this crap between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is settled. The picture quality is not that much better, and it is just not worth the hassle or risk of getting stuck.

Im mostly hedging my bets on HD-DVD winning out, the format is cheaper for manufacturers to make than BlueRay discs and its been available at a consumer friendly price longer. If you *have* to get something, go with whoever has the movies you want, or get one of those dual format players. I haven't presonally invested in either format yet, instead I bought a 120GB HDD for my Xbox 360 and I've been buying/renting HD movies and TV shows via Xbox Live.

Nope, was mainly the length of the recording time.

Many theories regarding why Sony's Betamax failed have arisen over the years. One of the more amusing (and false) is that Sony refused to allow pornographic material on their system. A quick perusal of the Betamax library reveals that adult entertainment was readily available. For example, Playboy Industries released their videos in a dual format, both Betamax and VHS, for most of the 1970s and 80s (and can be confirmed with a quick search through Ebay's adult section, or other used video markets). Second, the adult industry is too small to have any lasting impact on standards selection.

The Wiki Is Wrong.

The industry eventually chose VHS over beta; not that Sony wouldn't let them record porn.

All the websites devoted to the war say the recording time was the main factor and I very much doubt porn would sway the decision.

Ars Technica reports today that the stupid format wars show no sign of improving anytime soon. And who wants HD porn?

VHS was cheaper to manufacture as well, as I recall. Wasn't that why the pron industry went with it?
