The Golden Compass movie

Just got back from seeing it. Am sitting on my EEE out in LI typing away for your benefits.

It was better than I expected, I was afraid they would take far more liberties with the religious aspects than they actually did.

They did change the ending of the movie in a pretty major way from the book though.

Overall I was happy, and really surprised they referred to the Daemons as actually daemons and not something like "Happy Christian Jesus Spirit Buddies."

I know it's PG-13, but with the way movies get rated these day, have no idea if that's realistic or not.

Would it be ok to take a 6 and 7 year old to? My 7 year old is reading the book now, and really wants to see the movie.

I think the crucial bit (not having seen the film) is "Parental Guidance". There is no theater experience or literature that my daughter could be exposed to in my presence that I could not put into a comprehensible context for her. This applied as much when she was 6 as now that she is 10. As the MPAA ratings have dunned it only "for sequences of fantasy violence", I fully expect that they see worse on television. Those ancient Warner Bros. cartoons that I grew up on were some of the nastiest things, and yet I was never once tempted to trick a coyote into falling off a cliff.

I would go see the movie first yourself. PG-13 would cause me to pause a lot more then a PG movie would. Plus, in the end, only you can be the judge if you want you kids to be exposed to what the movie has.

There's a couple of combat scenes but nothing really bad or bloody.

The worst part in the whole thing was when the one bear ripped the jaw off of the other one.

I'm only looking forward to Sweeny Todd.

I'll actually plunk down my 10 dollars for that one.

First, I'm not sure a 7 year old can really appreciate the book enough to read it, personally....

That said, it's got some pretty intense fight scenes. A 7 year old might find it pretty traumatic. But then agian, no more traumatic then the book....

As for the movie, I liked it, but I think if someone saw it without having read it, they'd barely understand it. I also thought they really watered down the anti-religion aspect of it. Not sure if that was for timing, or if that was simply becuase they didn't have the desire to alienate so many.

If your 7 year old is a pussy maybe.

I was disappointed in the watering-down, but on the other hand they put other aspects of the plot TOTALLY IN YOUR FACE in ways that didn't become apparent until the second or third books. The Authority wasn't even brought up until almost the end of the series.

My daughter is at the age where she thinks she's too old for anything fun.

I'm the one looking forward to that one.

I think it depends on the kid. My son, no, not only wouldn't he have gotten it at 7, he wouldn't have been interested. My daughter on the other hand, often shocked me by her level of understanding.

I thought it was a really well done movie. It was worth the ticket price and there are very few movies that I find that to be true in. Now, I haven't read the book, so I am just basing on the movie itself. I was however disappointed in the ending.

Here is the big question

Will the movie make money?
Will it break even?
Or will it bomb?

That's a good review as few who saw it that I know hadn't read it.

As for the ending, there's more to the book, but I think more people would have been disappointed with THAT ending the one they gave us.

Well the original ending was definitely much more of a cliffhanger than the one the movie used.

However now there's a jarring plot inconsistency between the movie and the book.

I imagine they're probably going to start the next movie where the ending of the book actually began, since they really need to reconcile that and explain how Asriel gets his portal thing working.

Didn't they do that with the LOTRs? They ended the movies in the middle of the books, but then then next movie picks up were the last movie left off even if it is the other book?

Now that I know that this was a series of books, the ending does make more sense.

Just saw it this afternoon, and thought it was pretty good. Good enough to buy the DVD when it comes out - although it did seem a bit "rushed". Maybe the DVD will contain some missing parts to fill it out a bit more and give it a bit more depth.

I haven't read the book so I've nothing to compare it to. But, it was better than I was expecting - Yahoo!'s list of movie critics gave it a B- and the Yahoo! users gave it a C+, which it unusual, since the Yahoo! users almost consistently give movies better reviews than the critics. Ebert went so far as to give it an A.

It's sure no Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, but then I wasn't really expecting anything that good.

My best part was when the jaw went flying - I sure wasn't expecting that! Teh bear was bad and needed killin'.

The thing I hated most about the movie was that monkey! I'm sure that that's the evil monkey that lives in the closet and makes us do bad things. Teh meenky is eebil and needs killin'!

I don't remember them doing it with the first movie, but I did remember that the end of the second movie ended incorrectly as well. In the book it ends with Frodo after he's been attacked by the spider and taken away and Sam has the ring. That was the beginning of the 3rd movie.

Ofcourse it bears mentioning that the Lord of the Rings was actually six books, not three. They were arranged in three "physical" books, but each book was made of two parts where the plots diverged strongly after the first novel. In the second and third novels the first part was to do with the human affairs while the second was following Sam and Frodo's quest, and there was no back and forth between them.

Which was hard because I generally found the stuff about Aragorn really boring and had to fight myself from skipping to the next section.

It's really worth it to read the books. Even as an adult.

That series was one of my most favorite of all time. Seriously. And when I finished the third book I was reduced to tears.

The plot of the books is much better than the movie was to me. The books didn't mention anything about parallel worlds at all until the end of the first novel, nor was the anti-established religion slant apparent until maybe the second book as well.

Also there is no Magistarium in the books. It's called "The Church" and there's no question who the enemy is.
