Conan

I am watching Conan The Barbarian for the first time in around 18 years and i am starting to think it's not quite the epic masterpiece I remember it being as a child.

What films have from your childhood have you gone back to and felt disillusioned by?

This was horribly disappointing when I rented in a few months back.

You know, whatever anybody says about the movie, Conan had one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

As for movies that disillusioned me ... I would have to say Star Wars. Don't get me wrong, I still love the original movies, but when I was a kid they seemed like perfection in cinematic art. Today I think the script is kinda bad and the acting really stiff.

*GASP*

What!?! Conan most certainly is a masterpiece...it is THE 'sword and sorcery' film of all time.

It's not Shawshank Redemption in terms of acting or script...but it's most certainly a masterpiece in it's own right.

A movie I always thought was awesome as a child, but then watched as an adult and found the second half weaker than a 90 year old vegetarian...was Explorers.

Dude (yes even androids say 'dude'), Conan is my hero...that's the barbarian, not O'brian.

Conan will be as good when I'm 90, as it was when I first saw it. I love every bit of it.

Nightmare on Elm Street was the terrifying film that I illegally watched as an early teen. When I had a friend stay over, we'd watch it after my parents went to bed and it would haunt the crap out of me. I watched it again when I hit thirty and thought it was tacky and unmoving as hell.

You are sadly mistaken, then.

What is the meaning of life, Muka? You remember.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Wise words. Words to live by.

God I love that quote...best line in a movie...ever.

Now he's the Governator...he'll crush your taxes, see them subtracted before you, and hear the lamentation of his rivals.

OK, I watched Explorers a few months ago and still quite liked it.

The thing with Conan is, that I also have Red Sonja and while I've not watched it recently (but will be soon), I know a sword wielding babe beats Arnie, for me
I will start watching Conan again and see if I like it better.

Is everyone thinking of Conan the Barbarian, btw, and not the sequel Conan the Destroyer?

I've watched every single one, multiple times.

It's a guilty pleasure.

Clash of the Titans. LOVED it as a kid. It would be utterly terrible now, but it is redeemed by its campiness. Does it suck? Is it a monument to all that is so bad it's good again? Yes. And yes.

Clash of the Titans is still very watchable for me but nothing beats Flash Gordon - I like it more now than I did when I was a kid as I kid I didn't notice how downright sexy it all is from BDSM scenes to lots of lycra and a drink that looks like absinthe and has a similar effect, to the bore worms, NOT THE BORE WORMS

A lot of the comedies I remember being great as a kid now seem so shallow and formulaic.

One of my favorite movies as a kid was Outrageous Fortune with Bette Midler and Shelley Long. I loved the whole 'using ballet to escape the bad guys' stuff.

In college, I recommended it strongly as a great comedy for a movie night. I was later embarassed by the choice. It's just not that great of a movie.

Other Shelley Long (Money Pit) and Bette Midler (Ruthless People) movies come to mind in thinking of movies that no longer seem good, so now that I think about
