OK you Brits - help me out with the BBC

I just started watching the BBC shows via iPlayer and I want to know your favorite shows!

I just watched all of Merlin, Series 2 and enjoyed it for the romp it is - especially Anthony Head.

I also just found out that Spooks is what's shown here as MI-5 and I feel compelled to play catch up now via Netflix.

Of course I'm a hardcore Doctor Who fan - come on Waters of Mars and very fond of Torchwood (sorry Sarah Jane, I'm not 12).

Otherwise, I tend to like mysteries, crime ... not comedy so much.

Help a poor Yank out!

Well I love the BBC a LOT. I used to live in the states and I missed it so much. News that unbiased is a rare thing! but in my opinion they only do a few things well; comedy and documentary. And period dramas. If you like nature shows I think David Attenborough's new series is still on the iPlayer, it's tremendous.

I don't know if Hustle is still on the player but that was a good show I used to watch.

I have no clue about iPlayer, but have you tried Being Human? It's a show that just finished the first season on BBC America. I haven't watched all of it, but I like what I saw, which mainly is Aidan Turner as a vampire because I have fastforwarded through other parts of it.

Yum. Being Human, BBC America

The premise sounds like a bad joke and Mr. Turner wears way too many clothes, but it is entertaining.

I have to admit to loving Spooks. The latest series started last Wednesday and is up on Iplayer episode one. Would really recommend doing catch up though before watching it. There was also a programme about a priest who was an exorcist a while back Martin Shaw played him (I think) no longer on iplayer but you may find elsewhere- was called Apparitions. Messiah was also quite good by the BBC - link here and you can see other drama from the BBC.

BBC - Northern Ireland - Messiah : The Rapture

As Arilynn mentioned "Being Human" is worth watching.

Also Spiral. Series II ended a week or 2 ago . It's a subtitled French Series (co-made/financed by BBC Four) about a group of cops , lawyers and judges investigating a Drugs Ring - very gallic, corrupt, gritty and violent. Sort of a Law and Order format, with single episode stories along side the full series investigation , well worth checking out . I have Series I on my Christmas List.

The other BBC shows I'll watch not mentioned above are Master Chef and University Challenge.

But if you are now using a proxy you should also check out Channel 4 - 4oD - Channel 4 is the state owned commerical channel - Ignore the numerous US Shows but check out some of the UK comedy shows such as Peep Show and The IT crowd. They do some very good one off documentaries as well.

EDIT I've just reread your OP Surreal - Ignore the comedy suggestion - but if you really like mysteries and crime you have to watch the Channel 4 Red Riding trilogy - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/red-riding A very dark look at a semi-fictional 1970's & 80's account of bent coppers, serial killers and corruption - Scary ! Oh and Wallenger on the BBC - A Swedish cop show ... lots of anoraks and bleak seascapes ... very Strindbergian

Not exactly a mystery or crime show, but I reckon 'Life' is the best thing on BBC at the moment. It's probably my fave ever nature documentary series, and there have certainly been few!

The first five episodes are currently available on BBC iPlayer.

The BBC is dead to me since they canceled Footballers Wives. Hotel Babylon almost made up for it, but BBCA never showed the third season.

It wasn't really a BBC series so they didn't cancel it , it was ITV who were responsible (teh Evol free market broadcaster) - Though it was cancelled because it had lower ratings than it's time slot competitor ... Hotel Babylon on the BBC

You mean Hotel Babylon killed Footballers Wives?

Yep !! Well it was contributory, the real reason was declining ratings but the 5th Series was up against Hotel Babylon which tended to get better ratings

Is there hope of another season? Is there is there?

You didn't ask for music suggestions, but... Later... with Jools Holland is one of the best ever.
At times the show can offer a dazzlingly eclectic mix of music. All played live. No lip syncing.
Holland can seem like a smarmy little twonk, but the music is wonderful.

Aidan Turner played Dante Gabriel Rossetti in Desperate Romantics, often shirtless. That was a fun romp.

For drama, I very much liked Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.
