| Mental Health Hazard ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | V remake I just finished watching the V pilot on Hulu and I'm very pleased. I always loved the concept, but it suffered from a bad case of the 80s (let they who've never had 80s hair cast the first stone). Much better graphics and acting. |

| Huge SciFi (SyFy) fan that I am, I could not bring myself to watch it this week. I HATED the first series. I will probably get around to seeing if it is any better then SGU though. That and alien invasion type shows bring up a really sore topic in my book. Did anyone here ever watch the ABC 2005 series "Invasion"? Fantastic storyline, top notch acting and my daughter and I held our breath through most of them. It was by far the best SciFi series ever and yet was canceled after just one season because of a hurricane. Yep a hurricane, Hurricane Katrina to be exact. Hurricanes played an integral part in the series and ABC pulled the plug. If you never watched it I would highly recommend finding who is hosting the series somewhere.

I was hoping that this was going to be a mini-series as well and I am disappointed that it wasn't. They put it in a tough time slot though since it has to compete with NCIS which is currently the number one TV show in the U.S. |

| That template guy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | meh. Only twenty minutes in and they're aleady establishing embassies and clinics and humans are visiting the ship? Is this the reader's digest condensed version of a plot? The art direction and FX work is very well done but the plot and pacing are shallow and rushed. Not impressed so far. |

I also got the distinct impression that the writers were only interested in creating a political/social drama, so they rushed to get the "alien encounter" part over with as fast as they could. They probably should have just created a show about contemporary politics and foreign affairs without the distraction of anorexic lizards ... apparently anorexic because they seem to be able to hide under about an inch of fake human flesh while still appearing to have average human bulk. They've got to be toothpicks under there! I wish Juliette was back on Lost

| That template guy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If they'd stretched what was covered in the pilot into 3-4 hours then the pivotal reveals (like two "important" characters turning out to be lizards) might have had some emotional impact or at least some shock value, but instead it's just schlock. Pity. |

I think the key to the story is how they do that harm. How they control people, how they use people. The show so far is kinda preachy... Humans are dumb and will worship anything (hello Mormons and Scientology). People will sell out to get wealth and fame. The reporter was a direct strike on how shitty the media is an they will do anything for ratings/money, even sell out all of humanity (shout out to 24 hour news outlets, cable news you suck). Kids from broken marriages suffer and will look for love and attention in the wrong places. Women who work too much ruin their own lives and sacrifice their families. Men will do whatever for pussy or the slight promise of it. The Catholic Church is desperate. People will sell their souls for free. (The Universal healthcare) I don't like television that is trying to teach me a lesson, but I am a sucker for shiny, so I will be watching. Last edited by Eboni Khan; 11-08-2009 at 04:42 PM. |

| Member ![]() | The original miniseries was a tribute to the french resistance and a political allegory about how a country people could be taken over by fascism. The fact that the bad guys were aliens was pretty much an afterthought, and was mainly added as a way to surf on the science-fiction wave of the early eighties. |

| Without Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger) as 'Willy the good alien' this will SUCK! Also, they can cut costs by making the aliens Mexicans.

| Yea I definitely thought they gave way too much info away on the first show. The sheer implications of what was happening has massive alternative many of which could have been utilized for interesting social interactions. But I only realized it was a remake after watching the pilot. Which was sort of a let down as well. For the most part I thought it was fairly compelling until they revealed that they were reptiles in disguise with evil intent. Then my reaction was just "oh jeeze, ok". This show with all of these possibilities has already revealed that their plot is the same formula used so many times before. How closely the show follows the original story will be interesting. And what's the deal with the reptiles, they have always been here? They just decided to go to the trouble of building these amazing ships and other technologies? And oh yeah, it bugged me that as time apparently went by nobody said : Hey could you park those ships somewhere else your blocking all the sunlight over the city! |

My Mood: | One more thing (sorry, I really don't mean to trash the show!) the complete disinterest the writers obviously have in V as science fiction is really evident in their blaring omission of the scientific point of view. They covered the stories of religion, family, broken homes, politics, health care, the news media, propaganda, and blindly following leaders (and all the other things Eboni mentioned in her post) ... But they didn't focus on one guy asking "so uh ... what are the odds aliens look just like humans? I mean ... do you guys have blood and everything? A circulatory system? What star system did you come from? What's it like there? What happened that caused you to need Earth's resources? How the hell are those ships floating up there?" Oh sure, the visitors probably won't answer ... but somebody must be asking. From my perspective, these are the first questions you tackle. But, as so many others have said, this was all skipped. Aliens were plopped on Earth and accepted within 20 minutes so the writers could rush right into depicting family drama. |

| Senior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SLU Supporter ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I dunno Aimee. Think about America right now. Most people are not scientific. Science is dead in America. Hell we don't even use the metric system. I am pretty sure that if Aliens landed it would go pretty close to the way they showed. The people that are always looking for something to make sense of chaos, would worship them. The people that are afraid of everything (the burn the witch religious right) would protest them and denounce them. Politicians would position themselves to try and benefit the most from the technology they have for their own countries, positions. A few people would ask questions, just like the same group of people that always ask questions, and they would be told to shut up and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth. A really important part of the story told in the pilot was the fact that the a Visitors set the perfect stage for their appearance. They destabilized the financial markets, and created and environment where people were worried about where the world was headed and are basically sad, lost and confused. They studied humans and created the perfect environment that people would easily accept them. The hot priest mentions it several times, to the desperate priest all the time. |

My Mood: | Well I agree that most people aren't scientific, but science is not as dead as you say in America. As many people as there are who take unscientific views about, say, climate change or evolution ... there is still a bustling scientific community promoting the scientific view of those issues. This segment of our population is preposterously omitted on this show. Sure, humans would eventually get around to asking "will you give us universal healthcare?" and "what colors do the peace ambassador uniforms come in?" but the first plausible questions that anybody would be asking would include things like "what do you aliens eat? is it me?"
