/me shakes her head. Nothing makes me more ashamed of being American than the absolute cesspool that we call Reality TV.

Actually, from my experience, they're just as obsessed over reality TV overseas. Big Brother was still huge in Britain when I was there last spring.

Oh maaaan. Reality shows needs to go the way of the dodo before they make a "Who Wants to Marry Our Basement Dwelling Sociopath".

Come on guyzzz, he's quirky! And he has such interesting hobbies!

And we're responsible for spreading that garbage. It's the biggest crime since we handed out those blankets to the Indians a few years back.

Everyone bitches about reality shows but obviously they get watched. I like watching a shot of love with Tila Tequila myself. I hope she picks Danni in the end.

The marriages on these shows are legal. What INS would have a problem with is if the followup visits in the coming years didn't show evidence of an actual marriage.

Yes. Big Brother is a European product and has been massive in the UK since the first series (1999?). There was a celebrity version too (think Z-List), but that may have ended after an alleged racist incident during the last series. I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here is also very popular and that finished just last week.

I think reality TV in its present form is past its sell-by date too.

I think reality shows are great. They take a bunch of average folks and throw them into a strange situation and make them compete against each other. The good ones are very interesting.

I've watched Survivor since the first season. I started watching Big Brother this past summer. Big Brother is fucking awesome.

The only "reality" shows I can watch (if they can even be called that) are the contests like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. I cannot sit through five minutes of the contrived backstabbing and cat fights, and privileged well-fed people shedding tears over whose turn it is to date Brad the Navy pilot.

American Idol is great however I only watch it for the train wrecks

I do think the early auditions are the high point of the entire series.

Edit: That's from X-Factor btw, which is a blatant rip-off of Pop Idol (the format acquired by an American network and called American Idol). Cowell tweaked the UK format and renamed it so he could cut Simon Fuller out of a highly profitable TV show. Fuller sued, and Cowell settled out of court.

I can't help feeling somewhat offended by the subject.

Not sure I can quite explain why, though.
