Verizon continues to get very aggressive against the iPhone - here is their new ad for the upcoming Motorola Droid phone:

I thought that was a great marketing ploy. I wonder how it'll work out for them.

I know a lot of people are anxiously awaiting a good phone from Verizon. They always end up with the crappy phones (BlackBerry's are an exception to some) but, overall their Smartphones and PDA's kinda suck.

iDont think calling Android "open" is entirely honest. The underlying software is open source, but it's designed to be locked down in the phone, just like the iPhone is. The big advantage Android had over OpenMoko, for the carriers, is that it's totally Tivoizable.

None of the new generation of so-called "smart" phones seem to be open in the way the PalmOS and Windows Mobile and Symbian phones are. I has a sad about that.

Doesn't look like an ad coming from a carrier that expects to get the iPhone anytime soon, does it? So much for that speculation...

I think Verizon is on to something with the "There's a map for that" ad. The real weak spot with the iPhone right now is AT&T...people love the iPhone, hate the network. With that in mind, I don't think your average iPhone user (or potential user) cares about the points this Droid ad brings up, particularly without seeing what the competing phone actually looks like or how it operates. The Palm Pre ads touted several of these advantages, and they didn't help to sway users (of course it also didn't help that the Pre ads were super creepy).

Verizon Motorola Droid (aka Sholes) outed in new leaked photos - SlashGear

Now, if Verizon/Motorola can actually deliver a sleek Android phone that people like to use, we could finally see a real battle for mindshare in the smart phone space. It's easy to promise an "iPhone killer" but no one has been able to deliver one yet. Is Motorola the company to do it?

I think they named it Droid just so they could say things like:

"Hang on, I need to recharge my droid"
"I'll program that into my droid"
"Grab your droid and lets go"

or perhaps the immortal "This is not the droid you're looking for"

One problem for all these "other" phones is "Apple’s App Store is now serving over 100,000 downloadable iPhone apps". Now truth be told many of those apps are simply duplicates or tiny variations of others but still that is quite a head start to give Apple if you are going to compete.

That just means app devs should start targeting other phones to get more sales.

Some of those apps are also pieces of crap.

Palm OS... CLASSIC Palm OS, still has more variety in applications than anything. That hasn't let it devour the market. Though it doesn't help that Palm has worse corporate ADHD than Linden Lab, as impossible as that seems.

Since Apple unapproved this for their iPhone, I hope something like this comes out on the Droid:

Same with M.A.M.E.

At least there are some NES emulators already on it though

Speaking of the Commodore 64 emulator on the iPhone/iPod Touch it is $2.99 for this weekend only. It's regularly $4.99.
