Skins on BBC

My husband has a very odd sense of humor. It's common for him to laugh out loud at things that make me just go .

He laughs at things that aren't even supposed to be funny. I can't even count how many times I've missed dramatic dialogue in a movie because he's laughed loud enough at one line to drown out the next few.

His weirdly awkward sense of humor is something I've grown accustomed to.

But his latest thing, I don't know. I just don't get it. He's been watching this show on BBC America.

And he laughs, repeatedly, at scenes in this show that make me cringe. I told him, I don't think it's supposed to be a comedy. I think it's meant to be a drama. (Although it feels more like a tragedy to me.) From my perspective, the entire premise of the show seems to be about a bunch of really horrible kids doing things that, even if they were in their thirties, would be fucked up behavior. All it shows is these kids jumping in and out of each others beds, doing drugs, passing out, etc, with apparently no repercussions.

When I pointed that out, he said they weren't kids, they were in college. I had to explain to him that "college" in this instance is the equivalent of high school in the US. It didn't change it for him, he says he doesn't think of them as kids and it's got funny moments and I should hush and let him watch it.

So help me out here. Has anyone seen this show? Is it supposed to be funny or amusing and I'm just not getting it?

The first set of characters, while a bit wild, have goals and ambitions they're willing to work for. Even the stalker is fairly efficient and will one day make an excellent Executive Assistant.

The second cast, including Effy, seem to be going nowhere and don't care. There's not even really much drama to it. One really nice aspect of the show used to be it's unpredictability. That's totally no longer true.

I thought it was utter shit, the terminology is all wrong and basically its a bunch of 'nice middle class' kids trying to be 'street' and failing

It's a comedy/drama with some very funny parts (The opening scene of season 3 comes to mind). The 'kids' are old enough to drink at the pub so I wouldn't worry about them being too young although I think the target audience for the show is mid teen. I wouldn't take it too seriously.

I'm not taking anything seriously I guess. I'm just not seeing any redeeming qualities. I've tried to watch it with him, but I find nothing likable about even one single character, and I can't imagine that the writers actually think the characters even remotely represent the average young person.
