Stargate Universe (official thread?)

Did not find one specifically on this, so...

Who is REALLY looking forward to the upcoming new entry in the Stargate franchise? I know I am, and not just because Ming-Na and Alaina Huffman are in it! I'm hoping Lou Diamond Phillips or Robert Carlyle brings to the cast what RDA brought to SG-1.

Speaking of which, I've been gearing up for SG:U by watching SG-1 episodes on Hulu. They're at season 4 now, which I was glad for because Window of Opportunity and First Ones are among my favorite episodes.

Been following the day to day of pre and current production at Joe Mallozzi's blog, one of the SG:U consulting producers and writers. Anyone else?

I'm reserving judgment on SG:U. Over the past few years the SG-1 franchise has almost worn itself out as much as Star Trek. Hopefully the new series will truly breathe some life into things.

My impression is that it's gonna give us the old Alien Forbidden Planet STO out there in space with no support but ourselves and the ship kind of atmosphere that we know and love.

I stopped watching SG a few years ago and I got about 3 episodes into SG Atlantis before I wrote that show off. I have no idea why they wanna run this into the ground. But hey people will watch anything now and days.

I liked Atlantis. The Wraith were a bit to vampire for my liking but Replicators and Genii were cool.

Here's a preview:

Seriously though, the basic plot reminds me a bit of "Farscape".

I sure hope it won't look like this:

I'm not as down on the franchise as you appear to be, but with the last few seasons of SG-1 I did find myself drifting away from it, and Atlantis (despite some great plot lines and episodes... and Jewel Staite joining the cast ) was often disappointing in the directions they took it.

The first time I heard the SG:U premise I thought "Lost In Space!" Sadly, everything old in sf is new again, all the time. Hopefully they go somewhere a bit different and "edgy" with it.

Agree and agree. Though I think they let the conflicts the Atlantis crew had with the Genii run their course and then run out a bit too early in the series. Later on they became little more than background noise.

Oh, the Genii were great - the way they used special operations units to retrieve advanced technology, attack enemies and scout enemy territory, relied on reverse engineering and espionage made them basically the "evil twins" of the protagonists. It's too bad the script writers didn't follow through with the idea.

Below is a site that has a video and questions asked of the cast of the show at Comic-Con 2009.

SGU Darker But "Still Stargate". Plus New Longer Trailer! - SGU - io9

From the interview it looks like to know what is going on you have to watch every episode.

I just hope hope hope they don't play the we're out of everything and have no power and no water and no air and no defense and no food and now we have power and oh now it's gone and now we have air and now oh it's gone and now we have communications and oh now they're gone and coffee and stuff card every week after week after week.

I got so damn tired of Atlantis having to function off one almost totally drained ZPM even when they found new ones. Why couldn't they build one of those anyway? Surely there were ZPM plants somewhere in the city, surely. They even had interactive maps and libraries and dynamic transportation to get them there.

Well i just watched the SG:U trailer for the first time today and I think it would make for a great movie. Hopefully as a show it'll manage to hope my attention as well, but I gotta say based off the premise and trailer I am indeed looking forward to this series.

I wouldn't mind the new SG:U as long as it has decent actors in it. I don't just want some famous actor in it just to give it credence.

Atlantis I didn't like too much until quite a ways into the first season. The story developed more and the actors seemed more relaxed together.

Found over at The Media Pundit a sort of first look, and a longish review (in two parts) of the first 3 episodes of Universe:

Stargate Universe is a promising show worth seeing
Stargate Universe review (Part 1); "We're here. That happened."
Stargate Universe review (Part 2); "This is not a game."
(Slight spoilers in Part 2; avoid it if you prefer to come at the show fresh.)

And I still never liked it as much as SG-1. SG-1 took about the same amount of time for the crew to work together well. Warehouse 13 has surprised both my daughter and I as both actors mesh so well.

We are both eagerly awaiting this Friday's SG-U premier.

Warehouse 13, Eureka, and both Stargate shows were some of my favorite shows on television. So was the Battlestar Galactica remake for a while. Seefee...oops...I mean....Sci-Fi...has yet to really really let me down when it comes to the shows they decide to back and support. Except for Sanctuary. I hated that.

But yes, I've gone and set up a recording for it already as well. I'm hoping it's something along the lines of Stargate meets the good points of Voyager meets Farscape.

I'm watching the retread after a homecoming game. Apparently the premier is thirty-five minutes long but embedded in fifty-five minutes of commercials to make it seem like a ninety minute show.

I'm wrong, it's actually thirty-five minutes of footage combined with eighty-five minutes of commercials to seem like a two-hour show!

I liked it. Had a lot of moodiness to it without seeming overwhelming (ok, it was dark, but some of the SG-brand of humor poked through now and again). Far more different then I was expecting. Not disappointed, but I'm still absorbing it right now.

Something is up with that Dr. Rush fella...

I'm not sure about it yet maybe it'll grow on me. I liked SG-1 from the beginning but after Richard Dean Anderson just started making guest appearances it went a bit down hill from there. Stargate: Atlantis I never really got into.

It looks like they took the Stargate universe and wiped imitation Ron Moore on it. It was ok, but it had a totally different feel to it. If it weren't for the cameo appearances and the gates on set, I would have not known it was a Stargate series.
