"V" Remake Being Developed by ABC

This goes into the "Can't they make anything original anymore?" file:

"V," the 1980s miniseries about alien lizards visiting Earth, will invade primetime once again.

ABC is developing a new adaptation of the franchise — which spawned a second mini and TV spinoff — written by "The 4400" co-creator/exec producer Scott Peters.

Warner Bros. TV, which was behind the original longform, is once again producing the project, which was sold as a spec script to the Alphabet net. Peters is set to exec produce, along with HDFilms principal Jace Hall.

Hall, the former head of Warner Bros.’ videogame division who has worked on titles including "F.E.A.R.," will help expand "V" into other platforms, including gaming. Peters, who earned two Emmy noms for "The 4400," said he wasn’t looking to do another sci-fi piece. But when Warner Bros. TV approached him about reinventing "V," the producer said he couldn’t resist.

"Whenever I mention ‘V’ to anybody, they still have a lot of good memories about the original movie and series," Peters said. "Everybody has that imagery of their uniforms, or the visitor eating a hamster. It’s a science fiction icon and too good to pass up."

The original "V" served as an allegory for the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. Peters said he won’t duplicate that concept, except that the new "V" will still focus on what happens when the masses have blind faith in their leaders. In this case, the new "V" will center on Erica Evans, a Homeland Security agent with an aimless son who’s got problems. When the aliens arrive, her son gloms on to them — causing tension within the family. As in the original "V," several storylines will unfold simultaneously.

But even without the same storyline, the original "V’s" bones will remain: As in the ’80s version, the show will open with an enormous army of spaceships hovering over the world’s major cities. The visitors say they’ve come to help Earth, but their motives are nefarious (in the original, they wanted to steal the world’s water supply).

Peters first pitched "V" to networks but failed to spark interest; Warner Bros. TV sent the scribe back to write "V" on spec — and ABC bought it. The original "V" scored a tremendous 40 share for its closing episode in 1983. That success spawned a sequel and a weekly series, which aired in the 1984-85 season.

Original "V" writer-producer-director Kenneth Johnson recently attempted to revive "V" as "V: The Second Generation" but is not involved in the Peters version. As for Peters, scribe has been spending more time behind the lens, helming multiple episodes of "The 4400," as well as "Jericho," "Burn Notice" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." He’s also directing the new CBS pilot "Harper’s Island." Peters also developed the pilot "Found" for ABC last year. He began his career as a writer-producer on "The Outer Limits."

I loved the TV series, I even have it on VHS but this has me very wary.

I'm going to pass on this one. The original was OK, but Network TV now has to be so santized and PC that this will probably be a big yawn. The whole Earth invaded by carnivorous/parasitic beings angle has been done to death. And I'm tired of these Sci Fi Holocaust allegories. What I'd like to see is a remake of the mini series "Amerika" where the Soviets, under a bogus UN mandate took over America. Updated a bit, it could be a very topical show.

Or, I am surpised very few attempts have been made to do something ala Harry Turtledove where The Nazis or Japanese Invade North America during WWII, I love those alternate history stories. But again, network TV wouldn't do it right.

Besides, I thought SciFi Channel had exclusive rights to cheesy lizard movies.

I loved "V", and have high hopes for this - Peters is good. He wrote some of the best episodes of Jericho. Hopefully, he'll ping Kenneth Johnson and bring him in as a creative consultant.

Regards,

-Flip

It would probably be better to just take the old mini-series, remaster it and then update the special effects like they did with the original Star Wars trilogy and the original Star Trek series. It would probably be a lot cheaper than making a completely new show and it would be like new for a different generation.

Talking about doing remakes, supposedly there is grumblings about redoing Red Dawn.

Can you even imagine how they could pull that off?

Well.. Battlestar Galactica was a huge improvement.
The original was cheese.
The original V was cheese, maybe the same thing will happen.

As a teenager catching V on late night TV as it was shown over here I absoutely loved it and still love the original version and have it on DVD. Even bought Kenneth Johnson's new book 'V: The Second Generation' which was quite interesting to read and would have been have interesting to see how it would have translated to the TV.

So I'm very wary of this ABC remake.

I liked the new Battlestar Galactica when I first watched it. Until I read up a bit on the old BG and noticed how sanitized they made the series. Especially Dirk Benedict's "Starbuck: Lost in Castration" changed my mind a lot.

Let's hope the V remake is better.

That Amerika series sounds also cool though. One of our nation's writers, Jef Elbers, wrote a similar story about two years ago, more up to date to the modern situation. 'The Caliphate of Knokke' (Knokke is a Flemish city). I don't know if it ever got translated. I don't think so. The liberal media hated the book.

I loved the book, "Amerika", and the miniseries (with Kris Kristofferson).. and I also liked "Red Dawn".. I would love to see an ongoing series about that topic. And while I loved the original Red Dawn, I have always felt that their budget was wasted and too small, and they needed less Swayzee.

And more Powers Boothe! I loved the cheesey old BSG, what a crush I had on Richard Hatch!

When the new show came out I HATED IT!!!!!!!*No snaps up* I was livid that they gave Starbuck a sex change. I stopped watching after 3 episodes. I kept recording them though, and slowly have worked my way into season 2, and I am at least getting lukewarm to it.

Actually, I did like V. But I was 21 ... young .... stupid ... and stoned most of the time ... back when a nickel bag cost .. wait for it ... 5 bucks! And would last a weekend! And the only other sci fi shows were Buck Rogers and Battlestar Gallatica .. the stupid one.

What the hell did I know?

Oh, the humanity.
