Life on Mars

I see thatr there is a US version of this show this Fall. I watched the original UK show all of season one and most of season 2 and I just loved it. I hope they don't ruin it with a US copy--even though Harvey Keitel is involved.

They have, as yet, niether made an American Space 1999, UFO, or The Prisoner.

Stick to Sci-Fi.. They tried with Red Dwarf, it failed before the Pilot was halfway finished.. HitchHiker's Guide was a pretty significant flop, and no one of any sense in the Dr Who world, considered the Fox Movie to be canon. No one would dare, with Monty Python. And Blake's 7 really only works, if your actors are English.

For the record though, Three's Company (and even it's spinoff "Three's a crowd") were both DIRECT rips of "Man About the House"... probably the most successful import.

Of course, UFO, The Prisoner, and Space 1999 were all ITC pproperties, not strictly "BBC". The same company that brought "The Muppet Show" to the air. Since ITC was an independent company, it was possible and lucrative for them to export the shows they made.

I've seen British programming and AFAIC it's ok. The problem with America I think is that the viewing public frequently doesn't want to bother learning the nuances or the accent. It's either that or the American distributors want to dumb things down.

Space 1999 didn't need translation, the accent in the show was largely American-ish already. It also already had Martin Landau and Barbara Bain (both Americans) in the lead.

I'm so glad that the version of The Ring I saw was the original Japanese version. A Hollywood treatment would have destroyed it and I don't want to even see what they did to it.

I got around to seeing the US pilot of this show today (It aired Thursday). It wasn't fantastic IMHO but it was interesting/fun enough to hold my attention, I'll watch it again this week and decide if I really like it.

I only caught bits and pieces of the Pilot. Looked really good from what I saw.

An American TV company met John Cleese in order to discuss a US remake of Fawlty Towers. Apparently Cleese stormed out of the meeting when they decided to make the show without the Basil Fawlty character because he's not a nice person - they were not allowed the rights to make it since then.

It's this sort of thing that makes you wonder why so few of the TV companies understand why shows are funny. Red Dwarf, the US version, was stunningly awful, more so than anyone could have imagined.

I confess I do like the American Version of The Office better than the Brit version. The American pilot for Red Dwarf, however, was an utter disaster.

I dono, I don't think Americanizing BBC shows is an instant fail. I'm gonna give Life on Mars a chance.

Season 1 of the US office was terrible, but it really took off after that and has come into its own, fantastic show!

I tried to watch Life on Mars when I read the synop, it caught my attention, but bored me after 3 episodes

wont be bothering with the US version..

I can't stand the US version of the Office, but I couldn't make it past the first season, however all the short clips of it I see on youtube are really unfunny

I thought the first episode was excellent, though I could see the whole premise becoming tedious very quickly. The show was well written, and pretty well acted. The only thing that I found gratuitous were the multiple shots of the World Trade Center. Yeah, I know, obviously they existed then and it would be startling to see them again if you went back in time - but they also showed them again at the end. It's minor though. I am definitely looking forward to this week's episode.

I think it's pertinent to point out you can't stand the US version of anything?

I think US versions of UK shows don't normally work because our 'heroes' in shows tend to be scumbags, which we love, and they get toned down for US audiences

Like I said, the First season was just a knock off of the British one, rehashed jokes and the like, after that it becomes its own.

Since the UK version is very much about the 70s TV program 'The Sweeney' what do they use in US version? 'Starsky and Hutch'?
