Ghostbusters 3 - bad idea?

I was reading today that it looks like Ghostbusters 3 is going to actually be made as the original script writers have been employed by Columbia Pictures to put a script together, which they hope will get the original cast back.

Looking at how much the cast have aged, and how Bill Murray is doing more serious stuff and Dan Aykroyd has vanished from the planet (not to mention the other two) as well as looking at how bad the 2nd film was... can they possibly make a decent Ghostbusters 3?
I very much doubt it.

Unless, they take it to a darker level - it's a franchise that could suddenly do well if it got a much darker overhaul (like comparing the 1990 Batman to Batman Begins).
Or will they go more kid-based, like the new Indiana Jones? Remember the gore from the original Raiders of the Lost Ark and Dan Aykroyd getting a blow job from a ghost in the original Ghostbusters? If Raiders can turn into the Crystal Skull kiddie flick, then Ghostbusters is doomed if it decides to follow the trend in Hollywood.

i remember in the late 90s early 2ks, that there was a toon called the Extreme Ghostbusters(?). although a bit campy, if they do go along those lines with the original cast acting as mentors, it could be done.

as for it beign a good idea? no.

I read about that yesterday. Yahoo reports it is not a done deal yet and that Bill Murray likely will only lend his voice to the project. They are considering a CGI angle.

I loved the original. The second was not as good, but there were laughs to be had. I just really think this is one best left as is.

Bad idea. Contrary to what the OP states, they did not get the original writers to write the script. The original movie was written by Aykroyd and Ramis. Personally, I think that they should have recruited them to write the new film, or at least bring them on as story consultants.

On a related note, in the upcoming Ghostbusters game, they managed to get most of the original cast back to voice their characters and Aykroyd and Ramis are writing the story. This game may well be much better than a third movie.

OMG, going CGI would be a mistake even worse than I thought Hollywood was capable of making.

Wow, yeah, you're totally right - I buggered up that info and it actually says the people behind the US version of "The Office".

actually going CGI may be the best idea.providing they do the entire movie that way, not just the FX. probably cheaper too.

If Aykroyd and Ramis come back to write the script, then yeah i may go see it.

I just don't think it suits the CGI franchise - I liked Final Fantasy and things like Shrek (very different films, since one is comedy) and even that Matrix short film in CGI which I forget the name of (Last flight of something)
However, there are films like Beowulf, which was interesting but I feel it was too realistic at times and too unrealistic for others and even though it was all CGI, this made it hit the uncanny valley and appeared more like a live action film with bad CGI.
So, I see Ghostbusters CGI going one of two ways - the Beowulf way, or the Shrek way and I think humans as CGI cartoon characters are just handled a bit too childishly.

What it boils down to is not trusting Hollywood with animation, especially when it's for a series that we are used to seeing as live action. They'd have to hand it over to small independants for me to be more optimistic, such as with the Matrix shorts and Batman : Gotham Knight (also shorts), but small independants don't have the manpower to do feature lengths, for the most part.

I think if they get the original cast back, and you don't go into it expecting to much it could be a fun cute nostalgic movie. I'd go see it.

Without the original actors, and without the original writers, it sounds like utter crap. And CG? No way, leave that to games.

depends on which studio they get to do it. either way i would go see if IF Aykroyd and Ramis, especially Ramis, writes the script, and the make it relevant to current events.

opening scene: Republican Convention.....

the potential!

As for using CGI, it really depends on what they're using it for.

The really silly part is, they got Akroyd and Ramis as writers for the PC game which was supposed to be its own continuation of the storyline (which got started way ago and is cancelled by now due to a stupid publisher merging )

That's just the facial animations recorded directly from an actor - the rest of the head, room and body are all real film then the face part is cgi except at the very end - the best possibility for using this is for making the actors look the age they were in the original films.

If it goes fully CGI, then you're still going to have loads of realism problems if they do the Beowulf thing of trying to be as real as if actors were doing it.
