Stargate: Continuum (may contain spoilers)

Has anyone else seen the latest direct-to-DVD movie Stargate: Continuum... and felt that maybe they should just stop making these things?

I enjoyed SG-1 for most of the series, although I think they completely jumped the shark when they imported Ben Browder and Claudia Black from Farscape (Fargate SG-1?). This latest attempt at a feature-length movie feels like simply rehashed crap with a slightly bigger budget (ooh, they get to use actual US Navy and Air Force equipment and personnel!).

Not one element of the story hadn't already been done on the show...

SPOILER COMING..

ok, so rehashed story elements:
  • Bad guy goes back in time to change earth to make it more amenable to invasion. Already done in SG-1, not to mention a billion sci-fi shows, including Star Trek: First Contact.
  • Heroes find themselves in changed timeline with weak explanation why they weren't changed along with it. I think SG-1 had several alternate timeline or alternate universe stories with the same premise.
  • Heroes need to convince their friends in alternate timeline they're telling the truth. ("I can prove I know you! Let me tell you something that only I could know!")
  • Good guys go back in time again, stop the original bad guy from changing time line, everything is fine. This is of course accomplished by some technobabble and an alien computer. Again.
  • Time line changes, everyone dead is no longer dead and we have a whimsical banter-filled closing scene.

Were the good writers still on strike? This is all so incredibly stale fare. Either come up with something new or let it just... die already!

Yeah, that same type story has been in at least two episodes of SG-1 not to mention Star Trek Enterprise and Voyager. Its a very old sci-fi story that has been done for several decades.

Another "Great Reset" story. Never gets old, does it?

Just watched this morning. All i have to say is this:

Oh. and it should also be noted that SGA has been cancelled past Season 5, as announced today on Gateworld. GateWorld - SCI FI confirms Atlantis cancellation, TV movie

I follow David Hewlett on Twitter, who plays McKay, and I was wondering what he meant by, "No more weekly McKay." Now I know.

Er you're complaining about the quality of writing on something related to Stargate?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but the way I enjoyed Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I didn't really watch it for the writing, it was to see Ben Browder in a tight black t-shirt.

Atlantis was crap though. Irredeemable crap.

I like that Atlantis had a bit of shiny but also a bit of tarnish to it. The characters are not flawless and, when faced with particular issues, do not always make the best decisions, sometimes leading to morally questionable outcomes. That the writers of the show are willing to do this in order to create an interesting story and source for discussion is something I admire. The result is a much more human and down to earth story. As such, I've never really watched anything from the SG franchises for the sex appeal, though some of the actors are hot.

Also - Ben Browder always struck me as being a little smarmy. Whether this is carry-over from his character on Farscape or just the way he acts all the time, i don't know. But given his character's more or less the shiny hero, it's sort of a turn-off for me, to be honest

And of course that could have easily been confused with this week's episode. O_O.
