Dr. Pimple Popper

This post brings me endless shame. I'm reluctant to even hit "Submit", but I can't help myself. What can I say? I'm a fool for really trashy TV and the summer season sucks.

The last couple of months, my husband and I have grown tired of non-stop political shows, so we started watching the paranormal stuff. I'm a confirmed skeptic, but I admit I've never experienced anything I couldn't explain. So who knows?

Then we saw the preview for "Dr. Pimple Popper", starting tonight on TLC.

After I suppressed my gag reflex, Hubs and I decided that, if nothing else, we could record an episode to skip through commercials. I don't know what it is about watching pimples being drained/eradicated/treated. Maybe it goes back to my teenage years. I never had acne, but everybody gets the occasional zit.

First comment: WTF reality TV? Second comment: WTF Cindy? I can't help it. I will probably FF through most of it, especially if it's too gross. My stomach is getting queasy just typing this out.

WTF Cindy?

Dr Pimple Popper review: Dr. Sandra Lee delivers the goo and then some | EW.com

Quote:
The idea that dermatologists could save lives was once so laughable, Seinfeld did a whole episode about it. (“The whole profession is, ‘Eh, just put some aloe on it,’” Jerry cracked to Elaine in “The Slicer.”) You might think that a show called Dr. Pimple Popper wouldn’t do much to bolster dermatology’s image, but with her new TLC series, Dr. Sandra Lee aims to prove she’s more than just a whitehead warrior.

Having built an epidermic empire with her pimple-popping, cyst-lancing, blackhead-extracting videos on YouTube and Instagram, Lee now has a bustling practice in the suburbs of Los Angeles. It’s there we meet her patients-of-the-week, people who are saddled with disfiguring skin conditions that go way beyond blackheads and breakouts. Melissa has a cantaloupe-sized lipoma (a benign tumor made of fat tissue) on her shoulder, which she hides by wearing hooded sweatshirts all year round. Tyler from New Hampshire is very reluctant to get the large lump on his forehead checked out because cancer runs in his family, but he’s finally ready to face his fears after the birth of his daughter. Amber hides the painful keloids (growths of scar tissue) on her ears with ever-present headbands, and Tahj is tired of the 60-plus boils (the result of steatocystoma multiplex) covering his torso.

It's called morbid fascination. All humans suffer from some form of it. Most usually only experience mild symptoms.

I used to watch My 600 LB Life.

What? I was gaining weight with no end in sight. I went from 115 lbs to 180+. Watching that show resulted in my losing most of that weight (the correct way) over the last couple of years. I'm down to 132 now. Not much further to go. My goal now is 125 and I'll see how I feel about getting back to 115 then.

Just for grins and giggles these were my goals:

1) lose 30 lbs (get down to 150)
2) 140 lbs
3) 130 lbs

I didn't set the second goal until I had reached the first. Same with the third, didn't set it until I reached 140.

Sometimes morbid fascination has it's place.

I've watched Dr. Lee's videos on her Youtube channel for a couple of years now. I had bad acne as a teenager (complete with a course of Accutane at one point) and I have always been a pimple popper. Like the article says: for me, watching other pimples/cysts get treated is oddly cathartic.

No shame in it at all. I love popping my pimples and I love the sound they make when they do pop.

My daughter is the same she is forever popping her hubby's blackheads.

There is also this: https://popitpal.com/ for those that just can't get enough doing it themselves.

Well that was interesting. A couple of queasy moments, but overall I felt so much empathy for the poor people suffering from all those cysts and growths. Holy crap.

This guy had a fixation for things like these. I used to have this lp in the '80s or something like that.

Alan Seidler ‎– The Duke Of Ook | Discogs.com

I remember the lyrics

My pylenoidal cyst is oozing
Oozing oozing for you
The blood is for my bleeding heart dear
One track made it to youtube. Cover illustration by R. Crumb.

I only like the popping part. The rest is boring or makes me queasy. That's why I will usually get my "popping out of flesh" fix on youtube. (i.e. pimples, cysts, tsetse fly larva....etc)

I've seen some of these videos on YouTube, and they're morbidly fascinating but I can't imagine watching that every week for long stretches of time. Although I do have great Sympathy for the people coming in, it's really their stories that are the fascinating bits, I'm sure.
