It was Takashi Miike who made this - believe me, any Japanese people that see his films always leave saying "What the hell is he on???"

Japanese cinema often has Japanese people just as bewildered and confused as the rest of the world, which is probably why western cinema is so popular in Japan.

Haha, when I saw the subject line of this post in New Posts, "The Mist" was the first thing I thought of. Not only did the ending suck, it was goddam telegraphed about half-way into the film. Completely unnecessary.

My nomination for worst possible ending, however, was the end of the movie Broken. It was just plain mean-spirited. I would almost call it audience abuse.

The ending of Heat (the '95 version with Pacino and De Niro) was kinda lame compared to how good the rest of the movie was.

The alternative ending to Army of darkness where he's working in the shop and suddenly he's attacked by the witch again.. terrible.

the vast majority of movies have shitty endings that can be predicted in the first 20 minutes of the film.
shitty endings decided upon by test audiences, hollywood formulas, etc.

That was really not the ending I was expecting, I agree.

Spoilerage here:

When he sees the butterfly, after all that talk about "they've lost their human emotions" I thought he was going to break the window and let him have the woman back! It made so much sense, rather than going out in a big explosion, the "smart hemocyte" had braved sun, set traps, all to get his girlfriend back and to try and get revenge on Neville, which are very human actions! So "oh, there's hope, they're human!" gets countered by "oh, nevermind, BOOM!". Yes, if you were about to risk getting killed by a bunch of angry frenzied sub humans you'd lock the people with the cure away, and then risk it if you could possibly live by giving the leader what he wanted. If he still attacked? THEN blow them up. Seriously though, why the butterfly symbolism for love and family if he wasn't going to act on it?

It didn't make my list of absolutely horrible endings, just was one that made me go

The butterfly was a symbol for metamorphosis...in that moment, he realized humanity had evolved and the world was not his anymore. I believe he actually allows them to execute him after that realization in the book, but he was also the only uninfected left too...the big boom was thrown in to let the film version woman and boy get away. And also because Hollywood like to blow shit up.

I didn't realize there was a book, actually. But what I meant is, you know how some movies create their own symbolism, some character is always associated with red, see red in a spot, that's the character's symbol etc. In the movie they strongly tied the butterfly to love and family, his daughter making it with her hands, the butterfly flitting away when he was saying goodbye.. They definitely made it very clear that that was what we were supposed to think of when we saw/heard "butterfly". If it meant the more archetypal metamorphoses meaning in the book, imo I think it was clumsily handled and badly translated in the movie.

I'm not even sure in was in the book...it's been a long time since I read it. *strains brain* I thought the metamorphosis angle was fairly clear, given that they framed it so the infected leader appeared to have wings at one point. But maybe it does tie back to the family thing though, since he (the infected) was bound and determined to get his woman back....maybe Neville realized that, transformed as they were, they still had emotions and wanted the same things he had? Iunno.

How can this have four pages and no one has yet mentioned the Ninth Gate? It has to be the mother of all decent movies that were ruined by a bad ending. Or a non ending in this case.

youre crazy.
wickerman (the original) was a tale of a man that paid the ultimate price for his humility, diligence, and love for fellow humans. it is without a doubt the greatest ending in cinema history. an ending that is so disturbing it leaves you feeling sick. it is an ending that moves you, an ending of consequence. sure, it would have been easier to write in a typical hollywood happy ending (oh he rescues the kid, and he flys off with britt into the sunset), but then you probably wouldnt have such a visceral memory of the film then.
i actually thought of wickerman when i first saw this thread, thinking 'that one movie that didnt sell out the ending'. maybe cos it wasnt made by hollywood.

i havent seen the ending of the shitty cage version. i watched the first half, in total disgust at the sheer butchery of a brilliant story, then turned it off.
its unfortunate that you saw the remake first go get the original version if you can find it. its brilliant.

What is it with Hollywood remaking decent films into shit?

Wicker Man
Get Carter (substitute Michael Caine with Stallone!?! not to mention Newcastle for Seattle!)
The Italian Job
Chakushin Ari (one missed call)
Juon (the grudge)
Ring (the ring)
King Kong
Dark Water
The Stepford Wives

forget all the petitions against Uwe Boll, we need to petition against Hollywood now! Stop turning good films into shit!

well, hollywood has a formula. movies are written with the lowest common denominator in mind in an effort to maximise mass appeal and thus $ales.
the potential box office receipts are the core of the production. everything else is ancillary.
