HA! Yeah I agree with you there. "ZOMG WHAT DID HE WHISPER?"

Pleeease All that was was an anticlimatic contrived "mystery". I didn't take anything away from that movie.

AI was the number one movie that came to my mind at this thread title, haha. I'm glad someone else mentioned it, it was like, "Kubrick, Kubrick, Kubrick..." and in the last 10 seconds it's like "NO WAIT, SPIELBERG!"

Yeah it's just pretentious twattiness - I know people who pretend they love it because 'Zomg, ambiguity, zomg, how arty and meaningful'

No. Just no.

I *liked* the happy ending to AI, Kubrick *chose* Spielberg to finish the film and I was all upset at the mean things people were doing to the poor bots.

The Wicker Man (the new version with Nicholas Cage) was a bad AND pathetic ending.

Cast Away I thought had a bad and lame ending.

The ending of Contact was just lame.

Mission to Mars didn't need to end like one of the lame early TNG episodes.
I loved Cast Away!

I thought it was a totally perfect movie in every single respect! hehe Ending and everything!

It has been promoted to Background Movie for me, even.

Wait, are we talking about depressing endings or ragging on shitty ones? Because I'd like to lob a few stones at Donnie Darko, whose ending stinks up the rest of the film. The movie half-assedly flits from theme to theme, referencing them but not really exploring them, and focuses on its plot, dangling a number of interesting threads in front of the viewer, and then the end doesn't explain anything and doesn't tie into any of the themes. A good ending could have saved the movie; instead, the end result is incoherent and shallow. Bah.

Dead or Alive - the Japanese film about yakuza, not the American one based on the computer game.

Throughout the whole film, it's a typical gangster movie with nothing out of the ordinary, then at the end, the two main protagonists face off for a fight and their weapons get bigger and bigger, just pulled out of nowhere then they throw a magical fireball at each other and it pans out to show the Earth exploding.
!?!? WTF!?!?

I thought the movie could have been a lot longer or that they could have split it up into two films to explain more things, but I think the end of that movie was appropriate--it's the only way that would eventually make sense, sad but true. I wanted to know more about the old lady. I wanted to know what he could do with his visions, but time ran out and the movie had to end.

But the ending didn't make sense. I could forgive this if it somehow demonstrated the themes that had been merely talked about earlier -- you know, if it added actual depth to the movie -- but it doesn't do that, either.

But really, creators need to make sure they're able to finish their plots. "They ran out of time" isn't an excuse -- if it's too long to fit into one movie, then it needs to be simplified. People who convert books to movies do this all the time.

But it DID add depth. The same kind of depth that the end of 12 Monkeys had. It was inevitable. Part of it is that idea that no matter how much we try to veer from the way that things are, the way things are will come crashing down on us in the end.

That was... not how I saw the ending. Seems like the world should have ended if it were about inevitability. As far as I remember, the ending acted more like a magic reset button.

(And I didn't much care for 12 Monkeys, either.)

K, I'm not defending that movie, because it pretty much sucked hippo weenie, but I'm fairly sure the one they took was a sailboat with no motor.

On of the MOST OVER RATED FILMS EVER! When it came out, people were afraid to admit that it sucked, because that would connote they "didn't get it" when there really was nothing to get. Same concept with Napoleon Dynamite - it wasn't funny, people just didn't want to admit they weren't "in" enough to get the jokes.

Regards,

-Flip

Any other films that should have a warning 'this won't end well'?
That was overall a pretty decent movie though. I watched it on the way back to NYC from Australia and I think that was the first Stephen King movie I enjoyed. It was a little ridiculous at points but I have to give props to the writer for somehow making his dwindling uniqueness look interesting.

WARNING - I'd call the spoilers below if they didn't completely suck - but I'm giving away the endings.

I'd say, "A.I.", but that entire film was completely awful. I really thought it was going to end with him frozen. Then came the Aliens. WTF?

RETURN OF THE JEDI. Ewoks. 'nuf said.

SIGNS. "Gee, let's invade a planet who's most abundant substance is our kryptonite."

"Passion of the Christ" and "Titanic" - the surprise endings really got me.

"The Fifth Element" - oh, Besson, why did you ruin this fun romp with Chris Tucker turning into a game show with a love story?

"Maximum Overdrive" - absolutely horrible. So Emilio Estevez is being attacked with a bunch of people by alive vehicles. The ending? They get on a boat, which apparently isn't possessed - only land vehicles act weird.

"Contact" - to quote Mr. Garrison: "I watched that whole damn movie to see the alien at the end, and it ends up being her father!" (he then pukes)

"Johnny Mnemonic" - WTF? A psychic dolphin? And how the hell did they butcher Gibson so phenomenally?

"Bowling for Columbine" - for once, Michael Moore is making (for him) a somewhat balance documentary on fear mongering in America. Then he has to do the cheapest gimmick of all time, visiting Charlton Heston unannounced, who was a perfect gentleman while Moore made himself look like even more of an ass.

Not the fault of directors, but fixed later: "Blade Runner" (theatrical cut), fixed in director's cut, and the happy-ending version of "Brazil."

Rant mode off!

Regards,

-Flip
The Fifth Element was fucking fantastic in every way and you take it back RIGHT NOW or you're dead to me.
