I'm sorry but Signs was unforgivable, a 5 year-old could have come up with a better ending, and everything was riding on the ending.

The Village was one of those movies that was just bad, I knew what was going to happen half an hour in.

He made 2 decent movies and one great film.

Most depressing ending ever.
Not to me. I watched it as a black comedy of sorts. *shrug*

I could even tolerate Julia Roberts in it and I can't stand her, everyone else was great.

The last Bond movie comes to mind. When I was watching it, it got to a point where I thought it was going to end - would have been a GREAT place for it to end - but it just kept on going... and going... and going...

They had a Daniel Craig Shirtless shot quota to fill.

It wasn't how The Mist ended per se, it was how the mist instantly cleared about 30 seconds after he shot the last person. I mean, if he wandered for a couple days after looking for monsters to eat him (but they weren't there) and it slowly faded off and THEN we saw the rescue convoy (with the woman that ran out of the supermarket at the beginning and everything), it wouldn't have seemed so retarded.

Then again, I guess it fits in with how these people trapped in the store formed entire new insane brainwashed societies in the matter of 1-2 days. At least with the book it seemed like more time took place.

Death, despair, destruction and absolutely no sign of hope is more interesting!

Well right, he does look like he's lost a couple fights with a shovel. I still they should have put Clive Owen in the roll. He's pretty good at playing one character for a really really long time.

War of the Worlds (new and old) didn't fare any better than Signs. The probes sitting on Mars in real life now can tell what the hell the atmosphere contains, but these creatures who mastered space travel and built Earth-specific walker tanks with ray guns which can survive nuclear blasts have no clue if Earth atmosphere is poisonous? Okay.

However, I enjoyed the special effects/cinematography. It was really creepy at points, which I liked. Other than that, dumb movie.

Yeah, in the book, they stop in amazement to watch the huge creature pass, discuss how much gas they have and decide to drive on until they run out. They disappear into the mist. The End. Did they make it? We decide.

No having to murder his kid. No moral hints about if only they'd helped the woman at the start, no army and no sun suddenly appearing.

Thread Title of the Week

It's funny about Julia Roberts. She is one of those very few who I either like or can't stand, depending on the movie itself.

For example, that movie where she has an abusive husband, and she runs off in disguise - I forget the name. I like that movie, and I can watch it over and over, as a background movie, when it comes on TV (cause I use TV as a background to working in SL, or cleaning house or something, and not every movie qualifies as a good background movie).

Other movies with her in it, I'll avoid because she's in it! Cause I hate her in them! Like, so much that I won't even watch the whole movie, even if it is one EVERYONE has seen!

So why don't I hate her in that movie? I don't know.

Asking about bad endings to movies - bad endings to me aren't necessarily sad or depressing ones, but ones where they never answer some burning question you've waited all movie for.

The Birds was one of those. When I first saw this
Alfred Hitchcock movie as a kid, I fully expected this birds attacking thing to get EXPLAINED, and waited patiently for the explanation. Boy, was I let down when it was not! (Now that I'm older and have seen it bunches of times, I no longer care so much, and it doesn't matter to me at all that there is no answer, and just appreciate the movie itself anyway.)

I hate movies that just sort of END - leaving questions unanswered, as if there is supposed to be some underlying moral we were supposed to grasp at that point, and never do. Some old sci fi movie, for instance, is trying to come to the fore of my brain on that one, but I can't remember it.

If I think of those movies that leave you hanging - I know there have been a number like that - I'll add them.

coco

P.S. Richard Gere is another. I can watch the movie where his wife is unfaithful (with that total HUNK frenchman, and boy, the scene where she is coming home on the train and remembering - and the looks that go across her face - perfection!) lots of times.

But I hate any movie where he starts off all smarmy and aren't I cute, and I can't watch those movies either, even though everyone else has.

The worst I can think of - Four Weddings and a Funeral - god Andie McDowell should just not speak. The rest of the movie was great.

I totally agree. That movie needed more Hugh Grant blinking and less Andie McDowell

Seriously though, the end of LOTR annoyed me.

I know they were doing it in chapters and I liked that, but did we really need the faux pre-credit blackness three times before they made us cry uncontrollably?
