I've low expectations for it. Not getting a good vibe off the trailer. Maybe another one will come along and change my mind.

I've not read the book and I'll my reaction to that trailer is a resounding "meh."

I'll be honest, it comes across as the film adaptation of a YA fiction ripoff of Snowcrash. That's not a great look.

Since no one seems to have the balls to take on Snowcrash, I will gladly take a YA fiction ripoff of it. I do think it has Spielberg's stamp all over it and I think he is, like Jurassic Park, definitely going more for the younger audience than those who have read the book.

I've read the book and... it was really a pretty lousy book. It read like Snowcrash fanfiction with a Mary Sue author-protagonist. I'm pretty fucking geeky and it took me multiple tries to slog through it... which I did because people kept telling me to "give it a chance".

So, after watching the trailer, it actually upsets me that they're putting the Iron Giant into it. No. Just no.

If you didn't like the book, you probably shouldn't bother with the movie. Though, I do think I enjoyed the movie far more than the book.

The story itself has kind of a retro-80's feel to it, which seems appropriately meta.

It opened tonight, I caught the first showing... and will probably be back to watch it again before the weekend is over.

I'm trying to think when that rule doesn't apply. Was there a film that turned out so well done you could enjoy it despite hating the book? Does Forrest Gump count?

Spot on.

Fun read if you're really bored and in the mood for the intellectual equivalent of popcorn. But for a futuristic scifi novel, it was startling just how much it was lacking in imagination. Virtual classrooms where you sit and listen to the teacher, then go to your locker? Really? That's the best virtual reality can do for an education?

The Bourne Identity book is incredibly boring. They just sit around in hotel rooms while Jason mopes about Treadstone or whatever. I couldn't finish it it was so bland, so maybe it gets better.

I am sure there are more that I am not thinking of.

The biggest issue with Ready Player One, the book, was it was a constant stream of "nostalgia lists". It felt like it was written by someone from the 6th grade doing a research project on 80s culture.

My review of the movie:

Ready Player One

I have said a lot about my hopes for this movie for a while now. I have been apprehensive about the heavy “nostalgic” marketing.

People love all the 80’s references in the book, and so did I. but my love for the book is much more towards the themes of the book. I grew up in the 80’s, and I appreciate the nostalgia of that era, but I also grew up playing video games, and I especially appreciate the creative force behind games.

The last couple of days, I have seen a lot of spoiler free reviews saying they were “disappointed” that all the 80’s references from the book didn’t make it into the movie. These disappointed reviewers actually gave me hope in this movie, and that hope was rewarded!

At the heart of this story is the joy of gaming, the “Contest” is about discovering the hopes and dreams of the creator of this game, the plot is stopping the corporate exploitation of things you hold dear. Nostalgia has nothing to do with any of this.

Stephen Spielberg made the perfect movie with this material. He kept the basic ingredients of the plot, threw out the intertextual stuff so he could add in his own surprises (hint: Spielberg is a big fan of Stanley Kubrick).

The most important “80’s nostalgia” found in this movie is that Spielberg made a movie that feels like the kind of movie he made back then. This feels like a cross between a futuristic “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Back to the Future” (composer Alan Silvestri has a lot to do with the latter)

One of those surprises was the respect he showed to Halliday the fictional creator of the Oasis. Spielberg, screenwriter Zack Penn, and actor Mark Rylance, turned him into a real person, oddly much more real than the book portrayed him.

The way they honored the fictional character as a creative and misunderstood genius is basically as a tribute to all the creative and misunderstood geniuses we will never get to know. Halliday is the character in this movie I relate to the most.

Now I am firing up "Atari Vault" and finding that third key:

The treatment The Iron Giant got in the film was handled in a way that, to me, seemed very respectful to the original film.
Also, it's not just there as a gag, it serves as character development for the protagonist building/using it.

I have not seen the movie and its been a bit since I read the book but wasn't it Leopardon from Supaidāman in the book instead of The Iron Giant?

I was watching a vid on youtube that obsessed over how the stacks would never work and likely fall. Great minds ..

Managed to miss this in the theater because the group I go with did not go to many showings of it. Ironically they are still going to 'wrinkle in time' shows though.

Looks like I will be buying the digital download.

The ones in the movie trailer I saw were completely impractical. The impression I got from the book was something much more compact and more like a junkyard.

They're simply not needed. The US is a big country. If you did want to stack living quarters, the way to go is shipping containers. They stack them about ten units high on container ships, so they are very sturdy. A few people have taken to container conversions, since they can be had pretty cheap:

Yes, shipping containers would work MUCH better. You still would run into problems quickly if you were making a tower but it would be better than the 'structures' I have seen in previews.
