SL Join Date: 9/27/2003 | Hello all ![]() I realize that I haven't posted at all, really, but I do need some help. I know that SL is not very compatible with wireless internet. Here on my acreage, I have little choice but to opt for wireless or the dreaded dial up (there is no way that they are going to dig a trench here from town for high speed). My connection appears to be fine 80% of the time. I can move fine, minimal lag, but I cannot cross sim borders. To cross into another sim or even to teleport to another, I have to relog and set my destination as the sim I am heading to. It is trying, but I have gotten used to it. The worst thing is the lack of voicechat. I feel like I'm missing out on so many things since I moved as many of my friends use voice. Voice is not an option with wireless internet I've read, but my question is if I can fake SL into thinking I have better access than I do? I'm sure that's a stupid question but is anyone in the same boat as me? ![]() Thanks muchly. |

My Mood: | for the first year and a half of my time in SL, I was wireless too and had similar ar issues. then I moved our router, went wired, and like magic, my problems were gone. unfortunately, there really aren't too many alternatives to going wired. you mentioned not wanting to do major digging for a ground line... should we assume that's for cable? are there any dsl providers in your area? |

My Mood: | It's definitely possible to use SL with wireless, I do, on a laptop. I've no idea why, voice works too. I'm sorry I realise this isn't very helpful ![]()

My Mood: | I did find for the most part, using SL on a wireless connection was ok, but i basically saw a lot more random disconnects, redmapping on a regular basis, as well as audio streaming breaking up really badly depending on what else was also running. Since going wired, none of the above happen to me anymore. |

My Mood: | It really depends on what kind of wireless the OP has. It probably is not 802.11G or N as that does not travel very far at all and they seemed to be indicating a rural area. It is likely to be the type of wireless that requires a satellite dish or antenna on their roof. This has quite different characteristics to in-home wireless based on 802.11G or N. Latency is the killer for all wireless connections and the outside long range ones are far worse than the short range in-home ones. The in-home 802.11G/N does a relatively good job still with SL despite poor latencies but that is not going to be true (as the OP indicated) with the other types. |

My Mood: | I knmow several people who use (or have used) both satellite Internet and Wi-Fi/WiMax type connections with SL, with uneven results. Some have reported few issues, while others constantly report problems. Frankly, if that's all that's available to you, you probably have to live with what you're getting. P2

My Mood: | I had a horrible time over the summer trying to use SL on a brand new laptop using a wireless connection. I was staying at a B&B in the boondocks so I honestly don't know what type of wireless they had, but I had the same teleport issues, constant crashes, red mapping, etc. just a horrible and frustrating experience. I'd advise OP to seek out a DSL connect and fast. This day and age, researching what ISP's were available would be one of the thing's I'd have to do before initiating a move. good luck OP |

My Mood: | The type of wireless built into laptops is the 802.11G kind (short range) and can work with SL quite well, it can also suck of course but then wired internet access can suck too. |

| Foul ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | What type of wireless are we talking about here? WiMAX? CDMA? I can definitely see a cellular high-speed data line having trouble with SL. I have used it over WiMAX, with fairly successful results. Upstream data over WiMAX is severely limited, though. Which could explain inconsistent voice results. My Mood: | I think it is important that you let us know what type of wireless you're talking about. Are you talking about 802.11a/b/g/n which is a home, short-range "WiFi" router that plus into a cable, DSL or FiOS connection? That should work just fine. Is it an EVDO mobile broadband air card? Those work pretty well. Is it satellite? Satellite has high latency, so they don't work quite so well. Regards, -Flip
