My Mood: | Recommendations for US-Based online PC purchase Hey everyone, I need to find a PC replacement for my man who is in the US... No gold plating as the budget won't stretch to that but it does need to have the grunt to run SL decently. I figure he needs a decent NVidia card, Core 2 duo and at least 2Mb RAM. He has a good monitor, KB and mouse so he only needs the box. Any recommendations for online stores with decent but cheap deals would be greatly appreciated. A friend recommended bestbuy.com however they have name brands and very little flexibility on the options unless I want to build something from individual compnents, which I really dont want to do. What I'm looking for is a generic build with decent components. Would also greatly prefer XP rather than Vista but I know that's prolly going to be a big ask. Pre-built with OEM Windows installed is what I need so he can buy it and get it shipped ready to go. Oh and if anyone can tell me if there really is an advantage for Intel over a Celeron I'd appreciate some advice there too, since the Celeries are generally cheaper (well they are in Aus anyways). I'd organise it here in Aus but our power is different so I need a US retailer. I'm assuming that they will all ship to Puerto Rico without a problem.... thanks in advance ![]() Mabb

My Mood: | Definitely NOT BestBuy.com, lulz. I've always had really good luck with TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components & Electronics and Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!. TigerDirect is owned by the same company that owns Systemax, so they allow you to customize Systemax systems with various components. They also have all of their support and warranty handling in the United States. Regards, -Flip

My Mood: | avadirect.com was great for us - we could pick out everything, they put it together, and sent it to us.

| Foul ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I used to be all about building form parts, but anymore I'm a fan of just piecing something together from Dell, Alienware, etc. and buying into the warranty. That way when something breaks, I don't have to worry about it. That is probably a result of my Apple fandom, though. Never had to work through another PC manufacturer's technical support, but Apple has always been willing to replace whatever I needed whenever I needed, no questions asked. From what I know of other manufacturers' customer support, much less can be expected. I did recently order a Dell OptiPlex machine to act as an internal project server and was very impressed with its build quality and ease of customization. May be worth it to check out some major manufacturers 'small business' stores. They tend to offer sturdier cases and higher quality components to their corporate customers. |

My Mood: | Another vote for Dell.com here as well. Good prices, good quality, average but acceptable support. Inspiron Desktops start at US $279 ![]() On processors - Intel has outstripped AMD in top-end processing power. But if you're on a budget, AMD is a great choice, especially if you're not going for top end. |
