My Mood:

Windows Stop errors on shutdown

Windows XP Media edition SP 3

ok I suspect it's motherboard or virus deeply hidden any thoughts?

I have used following software to clean up:

-done superantispyware in safe mode
-spybot search and destroy
-advanced windows protection personal edition
-window wiper
-tweak registry (no conflicts)
-norton antivirus

-also ran windows checkdisk and fixed a corrupted sector on HD.
-also booted windows from disk and ran xp repair

the fact that it ran and shutdown fine immediately after running windows xp repair makes me think it may be a deep seated virus.

any thoughts? I could DL "Hijack this" and post the log or download AVG antivirus just to run and see if Norton missed anything

Someone suggested a free Kaspersky av scan to see if anything there but that mo fo takes forever.

I know just enough to get confused or in trouble so any thoughts appreciated

(note: i have uopgraded things but had these issue when new off and on too. Now after fixing bad sector I get an entirely new stop error on shutdown --hence my thought its viral)

thanks

Brave

Can you post the exact error message? Can't promise I'll be able to help, but I'll try.

Thanks Midi. I'll do that tonight. I am at work and cant access the logs.

although it did say something about not accessing memory.

I did run Dell system diagnostics as well as the diagnostics program called "check it" and it passed with flying colors so wonder if its a cache or bios setting issue.

That's another question, Dell hasn't posted a bios update since 06 or 7 for my bios--how do u find out if there are more recent updates out there?

Thanks again

you might get a pile of different numbers (0x00000000004 or whatever), but it would be useful to know if you get the same ones every time, or if it changes.

Re: Dell, did you go to their site and enter your service tag to see what they recommend for updates? Some of it will be totally not useful, but it's a good idea to have a wee look. (sorry if you already did this)

I'll check back later and see if i can be of some use

yes teh Dell update page and I are intimate they havent had anything new or useful in some time.

The rror codes are diff but last night I narrowed it down to Norton/symantec software I have! I am going to try some of the fixes on the Norton boards.

Unreall that a company of thjsi magniutudes 3rd party SW is doing this -_-

Oh btw any iodea how to find my bio updates outside of Dell's woefully abandoned update page?

and thanks again for offer of help and takling the time to respond

I was a bit suspicious your HDD might be failing until I saw that, but now I'm convinced it's merely infected with the Norton Antivirus virus.

I've had awful bother with Norton/Symantec as well, and don't get me started on Dad's Dell and Norton

I also was afraid your messages were a precursor to something more serious, so I'm really glad it's not that!

Norton do a complete removal tool
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

but you've probably found that by now.

Good luck with it!

thanks guys. Ill have to decide if I want to try the fix suggested on the Norton boards , or remove it and go with AVG and zone alarm or something similar.

I hate to dispose of things I paid $ for --but this may be a case of having to do so

Thanks again.

OK after checking some web forums I tried one solution of free upgrade to Norton 360 version 2.

This did not work --I still received stop error messages at the close of windows.

What did help was this mornings complete removal of Norton/Symantec products from my computer! I isntalled the free home version of AVast, found a trojan that norton missed, found a nother file identified as a virus which may not be, but 86'd it anyway./

I reinstated Windows XP firewall which many recommend and since I use a router my ports are already secure (thanks for that info Kristian)

I am back to a smooth running computer with no errors!

I got rid of "The Norton Anti-virus, virus" as Walker says!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had similar problems on an older computer which had to have been Norton related too.

I had sentimental reasons for always getting Norton, now going forward I will never allow that crap near my computer again!

Thanks everyone for the help!
